Finland was a province and then a grand duchy under Sweden from the 12th to the 19th centuries and an autonomous grand duchy of Russia after 1809. It won its complete independence in 1917. During World War II, it was able to successfully defend its freedom and resist invasions by the Soviet Union - albeit with some loss of territory. In the subsequent half century, the Finns made a remarkable transformation from a farm/forest economy to a diversified modern industrial economy; per capita income is now on par with Western Europe. As a member of the European Union, Finland was the only Nordic state to join the euro system at its initiation in January 1999. To be updated

Helsinki, päivä ennen lähtöä. Luterilaiseen työetiikkaan ja kärsimykseen sopimattomalle matkalle lähteminen on herättänyt kanssaihmisissä monenlaisia kysymyksiä. Vastausten koostamiseksi aioin naputella perinteisen ”Useimmin Kysytyt Kysymykset” -patteriston. Yksi kummastus nousi kuitenkin yli muiden, joten alla pari vastausta siihen Useimmin Kysyttyyn Kysymykseen: Oletteko voittaneet lotossa? Vastaus 1: Elämä on valintoja. Otetaan lempiesimerkkini autoilu. Uusi japanilainen perheauto maksaa noin 30 000 euroa. Sillä rahalla matkustaa maailman ympäri monta kertaa. [View Full Entry]

It was a rainy afternoon and over the thumb 30 High School students, me included dressed up as a transvestite ran through the center of Helsinki, followed by the eyes of thousands of laughing finnish people. You ask yourself, why for gods sake they did these things, and I ll tell you: It is a tradition in Finland, that in the beginning of the first school term, each of the older high school students pig one of the younger ones. This poor first year student is now the slave of the second year student and he has to do everything for [View Full Entry]

We were in Samaddi(or something like that, its very difficut to understand Finnish names), round about 70 kilometres away from Helsinki. We went there by bus with the First year students and the second year students of our High School. We spent the night in the incredible beautiful finnish nature. Thquiet and thee place has an allmost magic aura and we shared a lot of fun. A short summary We arrived in the early afternoon, played this typical games: "Hi I am Fynn I like ..." and then we students spent some time together without the teachers, we swam in the [View Full Entry]

Scandanavia rocks my world. I was definitely a viking in a former life. I had the most fantastic time in Scandanavia, travelling with Disa, Martin and Alberto over thousands of kilometres from Stockholm to a wee island in the north of Norway called Karlsøya (at 70 degrees north, my northernmost point, ever) and then all the way back to Stockholm. After a very, very brief stop in Helsinki, a 3am bus to Turku and an 11 hour ferry ride to Stockholm, I began my Scandanavian adventures. Disa had written to me, saying that she and Martin had met a Spanish guy [View Full Entry]

Uzpensky Cathedral - Helsinki

I might have been in Turku -(17 Aug) but I did not see a lot - wandered around aimlessly - bought a really cheap cotton shirt 70% off for only about 9E - $17 - and along the Aurojoki river (spp.?) and decided that a dinner cruise would kill 2 birds with one stone - food and travel. It was actually really good value from 7pm til 10pm - when it is finally getting dark after sunset at 9.30pm or so. Found a cruise boat going at 7pm and then came back to it after long walk along the river bank [View Full Entry]

14 August onwards sorta in Finland they say “hei” (pron. 'hey' as you might expect) for hello. the T shirts on the breakfast staff at the Grand Marina where I stayed 2 nights - said it in 4 languages - hei and hei - for finnish and swedish I assume - hello for UK and something else, I forget. Helsinki was a nice place to spend 3 nights, 2 days. My first night was spent at the Klaus K hotel- once I found the damn hotel (Helsinki central is so small I had virtually walked around the block where the hotel [View Full Entry]

We're in Helsinki now First of all, to our moms and dads : yes, we're ok (ofwel: alles is ok ;)) We just got off the plane and found some FREE wifi at the airport. This is how it's done, Dusseldorf! Anyway. We just saw there's some red line behind our scheduled flight to Bangkok but no further info. So we're hoping we can leave this evening. Otherwise I'm afraid we'll have to spend the night here at the airport or something, and that wouldn't be a great start, now would it =) On Sunday Lise had to work late, which [View Full Entry]

Helsinki tends to have some very visible churches against the skyline which are really landmarks - the Uzpensky eastern orthodox one was quite near my hotel - red brick with golden orbs on the top - thhe St Nicholas cathedral - forget what it is called in Finnish - and could probably not pronounce it anyway - by contrast is blinding white. I continue in English, to do not disturb my learning progress. Ok, maybe you w [View Full Entry]
