Finland was a province and then a grand duchy under Sweden from the 12th to the 19th centuries and an autonomous grand duchy of Russia after 1809. It won its complete independence in 1917. During World War II, it was able to successfully defend its freedom and resist invasions by the Soviet Union - albeit with some loss of territory. In the subsequent half century, the Finns made a remarkable transformation from a farm/forest economy to a diversified modern industrial economy; per capita income is now on par with Western Europe. As a member of the European Union, Finland was the only Nordic state to join the euro system at its initiation in January 1999. To be updated

This Entry contains pictures of Downtown / Helsinki and also of a little party at a friends place, we went to town on Friday afternoon and I was shown around and then we went to a little sit in party and spent the night there, it was a place called Laspo( or something like that) one hour away. We went there by train and when we arrived everybody there was totally wasted at round about 10 o clock. I think it is in the finish Genes, or a special finish drive, to drink as much as you can get. I felt [View Full Entry]

Went on a “City Highlights” tour which ended in “Senate Square” at the Lutheran Church, which was as decorative and iconized as a catholic church. Part of the tour included a stop at the Temppeliaukio Kirkko (Rock Church). Completed in 1952, it is built entirely underground and has a ceiling made of copper wire. The underground Rock Church is built inside of a massive block of natural granite in the middle of an ordinary residential square. Roger went back to the ship and Judy, Roxie and I went to Café’ Kappeli to meet Hannes, a fellow 911’r - 112 in Europe [View Full Entry]

Time to go Europe » Finland » Uusimaa » Helsinki
Uhhh, i was planning to write about some health issues, that i faced about a month before my scheduled departure, but it got so god damn borging, so i'll save you from the stupid whining and fast forward... Okay, and here we go: last day at work. There's a small storm of emotions inside of me and it's hard to keep my head together. Other side of me is scared of letting go of the routines of working week, but other side has been gliding somewhere far far away for a good while already. Now it's time to prepare myself, for [View Full Entry]

WEDNESDAY 9 SEPTEMBER Very early start this morning with breakfast at 6am and departure at 6:30am. Meant that I was up at 5am to shower before the crowds. The wind at breakfast nearly blew the cook tent away. First stop was at 8:30am which was still in Norway to get rid of any coins that we wouldn’t be able to exchange. After that it was about half an hour until the ‘border’ crossing which we simply drove through - despite the fact that Norway isn’t in the EU and Finland is. But no passport check nonetheless. When we crossed into Finland [View Full Entry]

Helsinki - Vantaa airport 4pm Sat. 12 Sept. the man must be desperate to use a wee fee conn. wherever he can! - there is naturally a wee fee conn. at Vantaa - or a couple of them to choose from. So a quick wee update. I obviously got to Tegel OK - a bit late last night after doing me laundry first. I just had to check whether I had done the Vini e Libri culinary update - which I obviously did last night so no need to overdo it (like he has been the whole trip some people might [View Full Entry]

I'm sitting at Helsinki Airport now waiting for my connecting flight to KTT :-) I was sooo excited last night that I didn't sleep - not for one minute. I was feeling extremely sick this morning and thought I have to vomit ... I'm just hoping that it'll be as good as I think it'll be :-) My Mum drove me to Frankfurt, I checked in and we drank a coffee before we had to say goodbye. I really have the best mum in the world as she's not only a mum but a friend as well :-) I never ever [View Full Entry]

Finland Part 2 Europe » Finland
Finland - the rest!! The days have passed too quickly! We’ve found out the history of Finland visiting various museums - it’s interesting to note that this might have been one of the Communist bloc if it hadn’t been for the “Whites” beating the “Reds” in 1918. We travelled 160 km north of Tampere to see the various animals that inhabit this land, such as elk, wolves and deer. We would like to say that we saw them in the wild, but we didn’t! A very large open zoo was an ideal location in the middle of nowhere. We experienced more [View Full Entry]

You go to Finland as a WHAT?! The idea In January 2007 I went to Norway to a Sleddogcenter for one week of Sleddogriding. It was like heaven to me and I felt as happy as never before. They had one girl working as a doghandler there and I thought "That must be a great job - Outdoor, Dogs and a lot of 'Sport'" As most of you know I went on a trip for 21 month to New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand and during this trip I was thinking what the future brings. For me it had to [View Full Entry]
