Finland was a province and then a grand duchy under Sweden from the 12th to the 19th centuries and an autonomous grand duchy of Russia after 1809. It won its complete independence in 1917. During World War II, it was able to successfully defend its freedom and resist invasions by the Soviet Union - albeit with some loss of territory. In the subsequent half century, the Finns made a remarkable transformation from a farm/forest economy to a diversified modern industrial economy; per capita income is now on par with Western Europe. As a member of the European Union, Finland was the only Nordic state to join the euro system at its initiation in January 1999. To be updated

[View Full Entry]

Day 21 - Sunday, June 21, 2009 - A Day Trip from Helsinki to Tallinn, Estonia We were happy to see some of our Elderhostel tour members at the buffet breakfast at the hotel this morning. Everyone but us will be flying away later today. Our flight isn't until Monday so we have one extra day in Helsinki. Since the entire city is virtually closed for the Mid-summer holiday we have decided to take the fast boat to Tallinn, Estonia. The young men working on the main desk of our hotel have been very helpul and we have enjoyed the hotel, [View Full Entry]

Close your eyes for a just a minute and picture Scandinavia. Looks pretty fine, doesn’t it? I’m guessing we summoned our fair share of forests and fjords, lakes and longboats, saunas and snow-clad slopes. And it really is all out there in this winter wonderland, an area five times as large as Britain with less than half the population. So why is it, do you think, that hardly anyone ever goes? I’ve been to some pretty far flung places in my time, but had never even thought of Scandinavia, despite Scotland being only a hop and a skip away. That is, [View Full Entry]

Helsinki and Cruise!! Europe » Finland
Woke up in the morning suprisingly fresh. Got into the station and had no idea of where to go or what to do. I looked at the schedule and I could have taken a train in 10 mins back to the lakes but I wasnt interested after 13 hrs. I wanted to explore the city. Got out on the road and tried to locate where exactly I was so I could make my way to some of the sights. Couldnt figure it out at all!! No one was out either. Things were open which was convient though. I kept walking straight [View Full Entry]

Got to Ulemea in the morning and it was something of a rude awakening. The conductor guy didnt speak any english at all but he i knew what he was trying to say. Get the hell up your getting off. I think it was around 730am. Got off and wanted to try and find a connection to Finland. Nothing was quite open yet though. Went to the bus station close to the train station thankfully. They had a few buses to Finland but I had to go to Kemi and switch if I wanted to go farther north to Rovaneimi. It [View Full Entry]

It was time to head further east and say good bye to wonderful Stockholm. Our ferry was suprisingly large. We discovered after purchasing a walk on ferry ticket that there wasn't actually any seats you could sit in and sleep apart from a room with nothing in you could lie down in so we went to reception in hope that there was a spare cabin we could purchase!!! With luck there was for 40 euros (below the car deck and with no bathroom) but it was a place to sleep and still feeling rather hungover G was happier to have a [View Full Entry]

Day 20 - June 20, 2009 - Saturday in Helsinki, Today is the last regualrly scheduled day of our Elderhostel trip. Tomorrow everyone but us will be leaving but more on that later. After breakfast we went on a bus tour of the city. Due to the midsummer holiday the streets were quite empty which made it much easier for the bus to get around. Helsini is the only European captial with no medieval past! In1746 Sweden built a huge fortress on an island outside of its harbor. The town of Helsinki was founded to supply the fortress. Actually, Helsinki was [View Full Entry]
