Simon and I hopped on the train and steamed into Kobenhavn for a great day of exploring. We walked to the Town hall and I got a famous picture on with the Author of many famous children's stories, Hans Christain Anderson. We weaved down Stroget street to experience the main shopping street and we quickly took a side street that showed us more of quiet Kobenhavn. Thanks to my first class tour guide we found Nyhavn which is where the sailors used to raise hell but now it is all cleaned up and home of the famous boat tours. We jumped on the next touring boat and caught a glipse of Kobenhavn from the water. We saw pretty much the whole city and it was great to hear the tour guide's explaination of it all. ... read more

Simon had class this morning so Courtney, Shelby and I left the house and meant to meet Simon in KBH but we took a detour. SWEDEN is a beautiful country or at least what we saw when we accidentaly went there! We spent about half an hour in Sweden and I had to put the Southern Charm on the toll both lady not to charge us for entering and leaving the country, it was great. After our adventure in Sweden was fun but Simon was waiting for us in KBH. We got back on track and finally meet up with Simon for some lunch. The last things on my list were Christiania, the hippie town. Hippies squatted on an old military base and they won the "squatting rights" to it so now it is a free ... read more

I showed up here in Denmark to wrap up my Europe trip with a bang. The proper Danish welcome is to lose your lugagge I guess, so I was greeted properly and Courtney, Shelby and I headed for Koge. Koge is a tiny town just south of Copenhagen where Simon, Courtney and now Shelby Chercka live. Shelby is their new 2 month old so this week is going to be a great experience for me so live with a tiny baby. She has been so sweet and even smiles when I hold her, well for a little bit. The Cherckas live in the Billesborg "estate" which is a school/church/their home. Courtney teaches english and Simon is going to Grad. school in Copenhagen. Shelby really likes to spend her days looking at things, eating, sleeping and ... read more

After all, what better place to cheer yourself up than in Denmark, the official Happiest Place on Earth? For three years in a row, the World Values Survey has bestowed that title on Denmark. The elaborate survey, conducted over a number of years in countries all around the world, takes into consideration factors such as education, health and welfare. One major reason for Denmark’s prosperity is that its taxes are sky-high, the government, in return, takes care of all health care and education, makin... read more

Windmills - On the way from Hamburg to Copenhagen you see them everywhere and it's stunning to watch and think about how many homes are being powered. Check out PickensPlan.com, I think the Oil tycoon is on to something. The midwest of the US could provide most of its powers from windmills and the west from solar energy. It's nothing new here Copenhagen, see the evolution: http://www.copenhagenpictures.dk/windmill-power-farm-energy.html 1st class - We have Eurorail tickets which allow us to travel almost anywhere in Europe for no additional cost, except for a few surcharges here and there for high speed trains, reservations, and sleeper cars. I tried to get 2nd class tickets, but because we are 27 plus and traveling together 1st class is the only available option, and it is more expensive to buy individual 2nd class ... read more

Today was the first day of school! It was very confusing because it was not like a normal school day. I met my class mates and they all seem very nice, they asked a bunch of questions but you could tell that they are really shy and i believe a little nervous speaking english to me. Last week I went with my councilor to meet my third family, they live about 20 mintutes away from my other families. I will have to take a train to school when i live with them, and that is very exciting =) They own their own business doing construction work, i heard that they are very busy all of the time. Also, they dont speak english at all, so i HAVE to know and learn danish by that time =) ... read more

Today, I fetched our chinese visa - piece of cake! The travel agency mentioned problems, minimum 3 weeks for each visum - definitely not true! Keep smiling, even if NOBODY in the russian or chinese embassy seems to know even the verb, and it will, together with a good book and plenty of time, result in success. Clearly, the mongolian service was the best: polite, smiling, informative, fast (2 days!), and the most expensive: 3.125,00 DKK! compared to the chinese (1.150,00) and the russian (2.180,00) a real Rolls Royce. Makes us curious, what will meet us in each country, regarding smiles and service. On Friday, 15th, we will have a little goodbye-party, and then on monday - off we go! By the way: we found a really nice guy who rents our house for some month, ... read more
