Ok ok i know we've had some weird adventures so far but i think we take the topper in this one... well to make a long story short (cause the space bar doesnt work that well) we made the vienna radio! i'm not sure if you heard in the states, but pres. bush was in austria the same day we were there and believe it or not we saw him!!! well a radio reporter came up to another girl on our tour who was from california too and started to ask her questions... well since taryne is from cali too, another girl on the tour dragged her and the reporter interviewed her too! Taryne plus three other americans wound up being on the viennese radio that afternoon! NOT TO MENTION our "lovely" president shut down the ... read more

With just a bit over a week left before we head home we decided to go downtown this evening. We had to wait until about eight as thunderstorms were rumbling through Prague and we did not want to get soaked in a downpour. Wandering the streets of this beautiful city is one of our favorite activities. Another favorite activity is stopping at a small café and enjoying a crepe and a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. This evening was no different. We stopped at a small outdoor café for a snack. Nancy ordered pancakes with hot fruits. Crepes were not on the menu. Bill ordered waffle with hot fruits. The hot fruits consisted of a mixture of currents, blueberries and blackberries … very yummy. However, no hot drinks this evening, it was too warm for ... read more

So I missed my train to Warsaw, Poland because some stupid German train employee gave me wrong directions to the train station so when I arrived at the station in Berlin and realized that a train to Prague left in three minutes, I hopped on this train and made my way to the Czech Republic. It was getting late on the train and I became worried because I didn't have the numbers of the people I planned to stay with in Prague from couchsurfing so I called my mom to look them up and eventually got in touch with two different hosts. While at first I had no place to stay, I managed to then promise two different guys that I'd stay at their place. I decided to worry about it after I safely made it ... read more

As a backpacker you quickly learn along the way, that there is a big difference between a tourist and a traveller. A tourist always follows a guided tour flashing his camera at everything that moves. You can always spot a tourist from miles away wearing his money belt and backpack while looking at a map upside down. A traveller on the other hand, always finds the hidden gems of a certain city or region, he/she always finds his/her way around because it is of course totally reasonable to expect that every human being knows their way around every corner of the world. And of course a traveller blends in with the local culture carrying every national costume in his small backpack. A real traveller would rather be caught dead than in front a tourist attraction flashing ... read more

There are stories everywhere. The problem is we are often to busy to notice the interesting events that go on around us all the time. Today we had a two and a half to three hour layover in Decin as we returned to Prague from Hrensco. Being a Sunday the bus station was closed, so there was no way to sit in the waiting room or to use the toilets ... water closet in the Czech Republic. But there is a park just across the street from the station and, fortunately, there is a large grocery store beside the park that has free water closets. Last year we sat in this same park for the same amount of time. The bus schedule had not changed. We climbed on the local bus in Hrensko about 10:45 and ... read more

So the unthinkable has happened. The Kaunas Lituanica baseball team, fresh from Lithuania, has made it into the semifinals of the european baseball championships. We beat the Czech team on Thursday, 10-1. This evening will be the semifinals, against Holland. Their team has many players who played in the minor leagues, and a few from the World Baseball Classic. They are very good, everybody says they will win the tournament. It is hard to believe that Lithuania is now one of the top teams in Europe!! I had planned to include some pictures in this entry, but the computer does not have the 'hardware' to do so (and the guy running the cafe gets angry any time you ask him a question). Next entry will have photos, I promise! ... read more

Frankfurt - Prague - 13th June 2006 Talk about security checks! We had so many bag searches leaving Germany it was ridiculous! Especially if you're carrying an excessive amount of carry-on bags! The flight itself only took about an hour. Seems like everything is about an hour from each other in Europe. We arrived in Prague around 8pm. It was pretty quiet when we arrived. Not many people in the airport. We got a transfer to our hotel for 480kc. I think it was only a 20 or so min drive. Our apartment was on Wenceslas Square. Talk about central! Downstairs there were heaps of shops, cafes, restaurants, and pubs! We were actually part of the Marks & Spencer building on the 6th floor. It was a studio layout complete with full kitchen, dishwasher, washing machine, ... read more

With time getting short and the weather finally being sunny and warm we decided to return to Hrensko for a weekend of hiking. We enjoyed this area so much last year and wanted at least one more visit to this beautiful region. The small village of Hrensko is located right beside the Labe River. Across the river is Germany. The border crosses the river about a mile north of Hrensko and beyond that is also Germany. The Czech customs station is only about three hundred yards from the village. Here cars entering the Czech Republic are checked. Ships going up and down the river are also checked. We walked to the customs office, but as we did not have our passports in our pockets it seemed prudent not to cross the border and end up stuck ... read more

learnt from the lesson in Vienna, we bought 24 hours-tickets soon after arrival, so everything went well, and prague is really better than vienna. in augsburg i came across a roommate originated from hunan, he told me that vienna carried out a programme to promote it's tourism 5 years ago, but maybe doing too much, turning vienna into an artificial sight-seeing scene. i think about the situation in hongkong, so understood immediately. sad but true, today we went to czech, we knew that there's a match between czech and ghana, after the match was over, we returned to the city centre, the people wearing czech jerseys were all looked like depressed, i guessed a draw maybe, it's hard to believe that, they lost 0:2, i didn't know it until sund... read more
