Pension Lugano
We really like this small Pension With time getting short and the weather finally being sunny and warm we decided to return to Hrensko for a weekend of hiking. We enjoyed this area so much last year and wanted at least one more visit to this beautiful region. The small village of Hrensko is located right beside the Labe River. Across the river is Germany. The border crosses the river about a mile north of Hrensko and beyond that is also Germany. The Czech customs station is only about three hundred yards from the village. Here cars entering the Czech Republic are checked. Ships going up and down the river are also checked. We walked to the customs office, but as we did not have our passports in our pockets it seemed prudent not to cross the border and end up stuck in no-mans land between the two customs stations.
Lesson one; do not necessarily believe what a reservations agent tells you on the Internet! We wanted to stay at the Pension Lugano, the same place we stayed last year. The room was nice, the bed was comfortable, the personnel were friendly and the meals were very good. This year I found that reservations could
be made on the Internet. So, I did just that. I filled out the form and e-mailed it to the agency that handled the reservations. A window popped up stating that I would receive confirmation e-mail within 30 hours. Guess what? I didn't receive an e-mail. I asked Mirka to call the reservations agency and inquire about the reservation. The reply was, "There are no rooms available in Hrensko. We can make a reservation for him in Janov."
I had no idea where Janov was located and told Mirka to wait until I had done some research. To make a long story a bit shorter Mirka found that the Hotel Labe, in Hrensko, had a room. So we made a reservation with them.
Lesson two; it never hurts, well almost never, to ask. We rode a long distance bus from Prague to Decin and then a local bus from there on to Hrensko. The bus stops just across a small street and street from the Pension Lugano. As we walked across the pedestrian bridge Nancy said, "Let's go to the Lugano and ask if they have a room for two nights."
"Fine," I replied.
We
entered the Lugano and recognized the young woman working behind the counter. She was the same woman who waited on us last year, the one who responded to my, "No Czech," with a hearty laugh and pointing to herself said, "No English."
Lesson three; sometimes the answer you wanted to hear is given. With our "No Czech" and her "No English" we communicated enough that she and a young man, who actually spoke a little English, that we needed a room for two nights ...
The answer was, "Yes, we have a room"
Later as we walked around the village we saw vacancy signs at other hotels and pensions. So much for the reservations agency.
