Dinner for 2
...and our washing for 2 in the background. Frankfurt - Prague - 13th June 2006 Talk about security checks! We had so many bag searches leaving Germany it was ridiculous! Especially if you're carrying an excessive amount of carry-on bags! The flight itself only took about an hour. Seems like everything is about an hour from each other in Europe.
We arrived in Prague around 8pm. It was pretty quiet when we arrived. Not many people in the airport. We got a transfer to our hotel for 480kc. I think it was only a 20 or so min drive.
Our apartment was on Wenceslas Square. Talk about central! Downstairs there were heaps of shops, cafes, restaurants, and pubs! We were actually part of the Marks & Spencer building on the 6th floor. It was a studio layout complete with full kitchen, dishwasher, washing machine, etc etc. A tiny tv with huge windows that opened onto a courtyard. The courtyard itself didn't have much. There were some workmen building a gazebo during our stay. All our furniture was from Ikea. I think we even had the same mugs at home!
We didn't have dinner that night as were pretty full from the meal on the plane.
Me @ Wenceslas Square
Shopping/eating/partying heaven! We unpacked and went to bed.
Dobré jitro (good morning) Prague! - 14th June 2006 We woke up to the sound of a circular saw and hammering. The workmen in the courtyard start working at 9am and the sun comes up about 5am! It was hard to sleep-in. Still waking up after 8am was absolute luxury!
We had some coffee/tea, got dressed, then went downstairs to get breakfast. We walked up the street and settled on some quick take-away. Todd had a schnitzel burger where the schnitzel was bigger than the bread! I had a chicken sandwhich. We ate by the main square with the locals. Food was so cheap! My sandwhich was under $2 AUD and Todd's about the same.
We strolled up and down Wenceslas Square looking at souvenir shops. I went into H&M but managed to stay away from Zara and Mango. There is literally no more room in my suitcase! We stopped by the post office to see how much it would cost to send stuff. Worked out the same price as we had paid in London. Next we went grocery shopping at Albert supermarket. Bought the essentials - milk, tea, Pepsi,
muesli, etc etc...and beer. The beer was so cheap! Todd bought 3 x 0.5L beers. The cheapest one being 50c! Our total grocery bill was only $20 AUD!
Back to the apartment we packed everything away then bought dinner from an Italian place downstairs. Delicious! As the food was so cheap we splurged on getting all the sides. Total cost of dinner was under $20 AUD!
Proper relaxing - 15th June 2006 Another nice sleep-in waking to the sounds of workmen hammering, Todd got up and prepared breakfast. A bowl of Muesli and coffee later we're dressed and downstairs strolling around town. In and out of souvenir shops we decided on one and got most things there. It gets a bit like that when you're shopping for souvenirs. After a while you just want to get it all at once and don't care so much about saving a couple dollars here and there. Later of course we find a marketplace selling the souvenirs for half the price...doh...ah wells at least it's all done now!
Shopping around we see a Thai Massage place. I vow to come back in the afternoon. I'm missing my monthly massages at
Regentville!
We stop in for lunch at the Italian place near our apartment. A big hearty and delicious meal! It's even better when it's so cheap! Todd takes our shopping upstairs to the apartment and I walk back to the Thai Massage place. I get an hour foot massage. HEAVEN!
Back to the apartment I find Todd in front of the tv. He looks half asleep. I do a couple loads of washing then we grab dinner downstairs from the take-away place on the corner. 2 Czech hot dogs. Todd enjoys a Czech beer with his.
City touring - 16th June 2006 We got up earlier than usual and walked up the top of the square to meet our tour group. We had signed up for a 4hr city tour covering the main sites of Prague. There were probably about 20-30 of us. Most from Australia! It's amazing how many Aussies are in Europe touring! Our tour guide was very well spoken. She took us from Wenceslas Square, to the Jewish Quarter, over the Charles Bridge, and tram to the Prague Castle. Felt like we were back on the Cosmos tour! As it was a fairly
hot day I was exhausted by the end. The tour ended at the Prague Castle and we had to make our way back by ourselves. We walked back (slowly!) stopping in for lunch at KFC. Ahhh KFC...I hadn't had it for over a year! I had a chicken salad YUM YUM YUM! I'm not sure if they have it here but will have to go check it out now!
Finally making it back to the apartment Todd watched the soccer on tv and I fell asleep. I did a couple loads of washing and then we got dinner from the Italian place downstairs. Later after dinner we did some packing then watched a movie on my laptop - The Family Stone.
Zbohem (goodbye) Prague! - 17th June 2006 Check-out was at 12pm today. Todd and I had a nice sleep in and packed our suitcases. We can't believe 4 nights have passed already! As our flight is later this afternoon, we left our bags at reception and did some last minute shopping as well as grabbing lunch. I was after some Czech crystal jewellery and Todd after some magnets. We had lunch at KFC (again!).
Back to the apartment at 2pm, our transfer guy picked us up and took us to the airport. There Todd watched the soccer on tv while I shopped at the duty free stores. It's nearly the end of my holiday and I am cramming all the last minute (and light-weight) shopping I can. I end up buying a lot of Czech jewellery and Absinth for my brother.
We're off to Munich soon...my last city of this holiday. I'm looking forward to seeing Nat & Adam, seeing the Socceroos play against Brazil and coming home to Sydney!!!!
