Day tripped to this little slice of paradise near the border of eastern Germany. A stunning day of serious tranquility and beauty. Was all zen like when I returned to Prague... felt like engaging in some contemporary dance to really top it off. "Sway like the wind, willow..........."... read more

Actually the place didn't just smell... it fairly reeeked! From Sederic's Ossurary Bein Haus (literal translation is Bone House) - to the gigantic Philip Morris factory in town - to the fatal car accident we witnessed... it was kind of a weird day. But the Museum of Alchemy cheered me no end! Kudos to raiding the nitrous stash and turning stuff into gold and precious metal. And as I am a fan of the sheperd Santiago's journey to the Pyramids, then suspending reality and imagining it all really happening was a little too easy. BEING HAUS - In 1870, František Rint, a woodcarver, was employed by the Schwarzenberg family to put a whole lotta bones in order to make room for more dead people. The macabre results of his effort speaks for itself, and include the ... read more

I'm posting a lot of pictures of Prague because the architecture made it a really beautiful city to photograph. I'd read about how Prague hadn't suffered much damage during World War II, so the city was a mix of different periods from Barogue to Renaissance to Gothic. But walking through the city, it's not like you look at a building and think, "Wow, what an interesting piece of Gothic construction, how fascinating that it's right next to a Renaissance church." Because I really couldn't tell you what style I was looking at or when it was built. I just know there were a lot of cool ornate buildings and old churches. Seven years ago when I was in Europe I heard about how cheap the Czech Republic was, with beers for 25 cents. It's not as ... read more

Day 50: May 25 - AUSTRIA - Vienna, CZECH REPUBLIC - Prague Accommodation: Hotel Patanka, Prague Our time in Austria was at an end, so we all got back on the bus with our bags and we were off again for another day to be spent mostly on the road. I was thankful of the bus driver's mandatory stops every 2 or 3 hours because I certainly needed them today after last night's effort. The most memorable stop was at the Czech Republic border. Travelling over road borders from France to Italy to Austria we drove straight through without much realisation of the fact as these were European Union countries who no longer required border stops, however the Czech Republic was only a recent addition to the EU and had not yet abolished their border control ... read more

Cerveny Ujezd is located about fifteen to twenty miles west of Prague and is surrounded by rolling hills of farmland. Oil rapeseed is in full-bloom this time of year making the countryside a patchwork of bright yellow and green. The green is growing wheat and the yellow is the flowering rapeseed. If rapeseed is not the brightest yellow blossom in nature I am not sure what is brighter. The bright yellow of flowering rape and fields of green wheat growing always make me think of Brazil and the Brazilian flag. I would think any Brazilian traveling through the Czech Republic this time of year would be delighted. Cerveny Ujezd advertises itself as a castle. On their web site they use the terms Hrad Ceveny Ujezd. Hrad is Czech for castle. The layout is like a castle. ... read more

Cesky Krumlov is a town I could live in. It's so homey! Not to mention vegetarian friendly! The first night here, Phuong and I found a vegetarian restaurant where we were seating at a picnic table next to the river. The food was awesome, but the view and atmosphere was unbeatable, so we sat there for a couple of hours just taking it all in! Everyone is very laid back, and no one is in a hurry to get anywhere. We went to the castle today. Apparently, in the 17th century, the royal family decided (mistakingly so!) that they were related to an Italian royal family, whose name they translated to mean "female bear." So, the royal family here became obsessed with bears and added them to their coat of arms and started breeding bears ... read more
