19-08-08 - Czeching out…. Sitting (or lying as the tent is too small for sitting up) at a campsite on the outskirts of Trencin, Slovakia. The guide book spoke warmly of this campsite and yes it is ok, but no more, a very noisy train comes past every now and then and the lake surrounding the campsite is full of dirt. However, the lady in the reception is really lovely, and gave us some introduction to the Slovak language. Since we last wrote we have been to Cesky Krumlov, and as expected it was great. We stayed in a great hostel where we had our own apartment with garden and river view (thanks A and T). Only one night in Cesky Krumlov - we’ve got to keep going, I think we could stay there a ... read more

This is an add-on in the czech republic to prague, We decided to check out a small town just south of Prague to see some of the unspoilt areas of the czech republic. As i said mentioned in prague - it was a very early start and the 4am wake up to make the train was making me a lil grumpy - the girls put up with it well and as i would realise over the course of the 2 weeks - girls and the odd mood swing do go hand in hand and its important when ur travelling to a) ask if someone is ok and b) apologise when u realise you've blown the casket for no reason. Away from reflection, the train was very different to the smooth efficient journeys i had in western ... read more

Tuesday 1st July: Spent the morning meandering through the back streets of this ancient little town before taking a tour of the Cesky Krumlov Castle. The theme in each room of the castle has been maintained with the same decor and furniture that was in place during its actual occupancy however I doubt some of it was original given the castle has been restored in many areas during the 1800's. The views from the bell tower were very impressive which gave 360 degree views across the town as I walked around the outside perimeter at the top. I then booked a kayak for the remainder of the afternoon and was driven by car 5km upstream and spent 1.5 hours casually paddling downstream back into the town taking in amazing scenery on both sides of the river. ... read more

Monday 30th June: Franz dropped me off at the central Vienna station where I caught a train to Cesky Budejovice and then on to Cesky Krumlov in the south of Czech Republic. The town has a river that circles through it and it reminds me a lot of Bright in Victoria as the water is the clearest I have seen so far on this trip. I wondered around the old town past all the small craft shops before settling for happy hour on the river bank at The Tornado Bar taking in the scenery on the opposite bank south of the castle. This town is so laid back and beautiful and fortunately the July tourist boom is yet to arrive although it is still predominantly tourists here now. I've noticed there are a lot of Japanese ... read more

Dobriden everyone from Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic. With its cobble stone streets, little shops and of course a beautiful 13th century castle with frescoes and a river that runs all through town I am living a fairy tale existence. We arrived here in Cesky Krumlov yesterday afternoon after having taken 2 trams, 3 trains and a bus from Vienna. We took an Austrian train to Grum No to the bordertown, then an inner-city train ïnto the Czech Republic and then took a bus and then a cargo train. We arrived here after about 6 hours of travel to what is one of the most beautiful towns I have ever seen in Europe. We are staying a beautiful hotel right at the heart of the Old City. We can see the Castle from the dormer ... read more

5/24/08 The Sudetenland… we have all heard about them, but do we know what they really are? Writing from beautiful Cesky Krumlov. It is a beautiful, old city that has seen so much. It is very old. The streets are very narrow, there are no elevators and internet access is scarce. Cesky Krumlov is a part of the Sudetenland, one of the parts where there is still an active life today. I learned that its history is more that what was told to me. I had only heard about its pre war history in relation to Hitler, nothing after. Here is its whole relation to twentieth century history. In the beginning of the twentieth century, Germans and Czechs lived together on this land. The two groups had been living together for quite some time. Generations of ... read more

It started raining in the evening and although it looked like the usual thunderstorm it didn’t stop, and it was still raining fairly steadily in the morning. We had done a wash in the evening so hung the line across the inside of the van from the bathroom door to a catch on the ceiling over the bed. The washing dries in the breeze as it flaps back and forward from the movement of the van. The camp is near the Vienna Woods so we took a detour through this lovely forested area - all deciduous trees - not sure what type but looked really nice even in the rain and mist. We worked our way through various bits of Vienna to get to the autobahn - through narrow and busy streets, narrow enough that I ... read more

Today was such a whirlwind, I don't know where to start! This morning dawned WAY too early for my jet-lagged body, but I got up and out by 8:45 to head to Cesky Krumlov. A small city in the South Bohemian (yes, I said SOUTH) Region of the Czech Republic, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, best known for its fine architecture and art of the historic old town, as well as Cesky Krumlov Castle. Sounds delightful right? Well, it was, except for one tiny little detail that the events planners forgot to mention - after we were underway for about a half hour, the tour guide mentioned that it would take two and a half to three hours to get there. Seriously. Nothing like a three hour bus ride on a little cramped bus ... read more

Morning: Today we will be leaving to another place called Brloh further south of Czech Rep and this is another time I feel reluctant to leave cos we had such a great time here! The first time was in Berlin and then now in Plzen cos both times, our hosts were superb and we had a fantastic time, regardless of where we are or the sights we see, it´s really the host that matters to us. And i´m especially touched when they would shift their original schedules to spend more time w us. So this time round, Mig changed his afternoon classes around to accompany us before we leave. I woke up jus before he came back from his morning classes and we got ready to go out for a short while before coming back to ... read more

Morning: This morning woke up at abt 9+ cos we will be taking a day trip today and the whole family will be going out also at about 11:30am. And Frank´s mum has already prepared a nice breakfast for us on her kitchen table! Wow what a nice spread! Even tho she couldn´t communicate w us, she still chatted w us and we kind of understand her gestures and some words. We, on the other hand, kept saying ´Dikuji´to her, which means thanks in Czech whenever she helped us w anything. So we quickly ate our breakfast and got ready to go out w the parents. Buses to and from Brloh is extremely infrequent so we needed to catch the 12:50pm bus that will take us to Cesky Krumlov. So while waiting for the bus, we ... read more
