I wasn't quite sure what to expect when first getting to Cesky Krumlov. I knew that it was the off-season, but the fact that only three other people got off the train when I did, seemed to scream that I had made the wrong choice in coming. In my head, I was silently thinking about how I was so disappointed that Rick Steves had let me down. I had always been able to trust him for good travel advice and I couldn't believe that he had betrayed me! All of these thoughts were simmering in my head while I had to wait thirty minutes to catch a bus into town. Of course, now that I was in the Czech Republic it was a whole new language and it seems that the bus driver and I miss-communicated ... read more

July 15 There was no breakfast at this hostel which was kind of nice because then I could sleep in and not miss breakfast. My sleeping in went until 9:00am which is way better then 11-12 like back home. I had bought some bread, cheese and oranges to have for breakfast. After my tummy was full I headed out to the castle which does not look like a castle but I really really nice building. The tower on this one was only 137 stairs but there was so many people crammed in at the top that is was hard to enjoy the view when you are constantly getting pushed and bumped if you stay in one spot to long. The high lite to me in the castle was this really neat art show that was going ... read more

What a long train ride, happy that I did get to sleep a little bit before Arriving in Cesky Krumlov, Czech Rupbulic. I arrived in Ceske Budejovice where I had a one hour wait before my next train. I was hungry but all I had was Euro's so I figured I needed to get some Crowns. I found out from a lady that 25 Kc equaled about 1 EUR, so it does seem that things are really expensive but here they are actually really cheap. There was a piercing store in the train station *EVIL* that I of course had to check out. I found these neat earrings that were painted a cool design, I have never seen anything like them before back home or anywhere. They were 300 Kc which comes to 12 EUR, which ... read more

On our last full day in Prague we gave our legs a rest and hired a car to get out to Cesky Krumlov, a few hours south of Prague. Richie chauffeured his 4 lovely ladies in the dodgiest hire car we had come across - a tiny Skoda (too small for 5 of us) without hub caps and which developed a strange noise later in the day... On the drive down we took a punt and followed a brown tourist sign which brought us to Castle Zvikov. which overlooks a gorgeous lake. We couldn’t actually go inside the castle as it was being used for a film set but we enjoyed wandering around the grounds. We all loved Cesky Krumlov with it’s beautiful buildings, river and castle. Thanks for the recommendation Tyson! It is a real ... read more

Our next adventure was to Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic. We booked our tickets from Vienna, it cost approx 90NZD to travel by train, with 2 connections. The train from Vienna to Czech Border was great, and then we made our connection to Ceske Budejovice ... put politely the train could be described as rustic or possibly a historical experience into rail travel in the 1930's. Unfortunately I have never been one to be subtle, so the train consisted of one carriage that resembled something out of the flintstones, I fully expected the floor to drop and we would have to paddle with our feet. The train also made bizarre stops in the middle of the forest for no reason, I decided to enlighten the ever worried Austrians onboard by yelling out "NOW. You walk" ... read more

CESKY KRUMLOV Day 48 First things first, I went straight to the castle. Unfortunately, the inner sections of the castle, the exhibits, and the theatre are closed from October to April. But you can still walk around the castle grounds which are beautiful on their own. The building is all painted in the baroque fashion. It is really lovely and this feature will be added to my wonder house. I am really disappointed that the theatre is closed because it is a baroque theatre so it would have been really interesting to see a show in the old stage fashion. I guess I will just need to come back. From the castle you can look down on the city that curves along the river. It would be truly beautiful in the spring and summer months. ... read more

We made a decision on the day we arrived that we would make an overnight stay of our visit to Cesky Krumlov. Hotel was booked and bus times known, but just one problem....... when we got to the bus depot we were unprepared to be turned away because we had not pre-booked bus tickets, they sold out rather quickly and there were no seats left. So our first and only real Prague drama began. No accomodation in Prague and a room booked 3 hours away, How were we going to get there? I must say the the czech people do not come across as the friendliest bunch and when we spoke to the bookings office about our dilemma initially they were unhelpful and said there was no way of getting to Cesky. As determined as I ... read more

CESKY KRUMLOV Day 47 I made my way from the hustle and bustle of Praha to the quaint and beautiful Cesky Krumlov. As I had arrived late in the day, the hostel staff informed me that I should go straight to the grocery store if I wanted to buy any food for dinner because in this small town everything closes at 5pm and sometimes 4pm. So I went straight to the grocery store and grabbed a few things at the very small store. After the store I went over to get a quick look at the castle before it was too late. The castle is beautiful and painted in so many colours! As I first walked in through the gates I saw a sign that said “don’t feed the bears” and at first I was ... read more
