Next up on my journey on the well-trodden path is one of Eastern, um, I mean Central Europe's (sorry, Czechs, my bad) most beloved tourist traps. Český Krumlov is the Czech Republic's second biggest tourist draw, after Prague, of course. Austrians hop over in droves, so do Germans, Russians, French, Italians, and, like with all other European snow globe towns, Chinese and Japanese. Before I get there, however, I stop by at České Budějovice, also known as Budweis. Ungh, one of those things where I think "Do I really have to explain that?": Budweis is the home town of one of the best Czech beers (which makes it one of the world's best beers by default), Budweiser. Apparently, they've been having some copyright issues with a beer of the same name, which is brewed in the ... read more

We awoke today to a stunning day in Cesky! So much so we even dared to just carry our jackets and not actually wear them! We had pretty much walked most of Cesky yesterday and needed to catch the bus at 1pm, so we had a nice lie in in our warm cosy private room! And then packed up and headed out to find somewehere to have breakfast. Turns out they dont really do the whole brunch thing in Cesky but we managed to find somewhere sitting in the sun that sold eggs and ?ham and salad? haha! They had breakie combos which resulted in a heck of a lot of different food on our table for 4 of us! But was a beautiful morning so everything went down pretty well as we laxed back and ... read more

Today we were up bright an early after a night of NO sleep due to a very very loud chain saw snorer in our dorm! No dorms, never again! It was so so painful! The other girls managed to sleep a bit but unfortunately I didnt at all so needless to say was not in a great state to start the day heading to Cesky! But was very excited as we all had high hopes for this lovely lil place! We got up and got a taxi at 8am to the station where we needed to get the 9am bus. the lady at our hostel said not to get tickets cos it was a sunday and we wouldnt need them. But very quickly the platform start piling with asian tourists and we were told the bus ... read more

Tuesday 3rd June 2012 After breakfast and a last stroll around Prague it was time again to load up the bikes and head to the train station. It was nice staying at the apartment for a few days, plenty of room and right in the centre of the old town - great location. We pushed our laden bikes through the crowded cobbed streets until we were able to ride them the rest of the way to the station. I went and purchased tickets for us and the bikes to Cesky Krumlov out next stop. 237.2kc = $11.86 per person with bikes. We had a little time to wait for the platform to appear on the board and hoped that the loading of the bikes onto the train would be a better experience than it was departing ... read more

An diesem Tag bin ich auf den Schwarzen Turm in Budweis gestiegen und habe die Aussicht auf den Marktplatz genossen. Anschließend bin ich nach Krummau gefahren und habe mir dort das Schloß angesehen. Beides war sehr sehenswert.... read more

Cesky Krumlov This town appeared out of the trees as a picturesque storybook place complete with castles and tiny tall white houses with orange tilled roofs. I was already in love before I had walked over the quaint bridge we had to cross to get to our hostel. The hostel actually looked like it belonged to the castle complex, I was pretty excited about our new home for the next 2 nights. It was the last bus tour with Joel, my favourite guide so far and just before he left he told us that the hostel used to be a hospital for lepracy and was actually haunted. As I have already lived in a very old minor's cottage with my own resident ghost this didn't bother me, but some of the others were a little concerned. ... read more

Quite often a hurried day trip for visitors, Cesky Krumlov (the pronunciation is a bit difficult) was a world away from the other cities I had visited to date. My goal was to visit as many places as possible, no matter how big or small! The old town, with Renaissance and baroque buildings, is crowned by a stunning castle and surrounded by the Vltava River. In my lap around the small town that only took me an hour, the sun was shining, autumn leaves were falling and there were no crowds. I was surrounded by green mountains, the calm (mirror image) river and church bells ringing. I felt like I was in a bit of a fantasy land and at this point I fell in love.. with Cesky Krumlov that is! (I hope the last line ... read more

We enjoyed a complementary buffet breakfast, packed up our bags and left them with the hotel. Our plan for the day was to take a leisurely raft ride down the Vltava River (the river that bends around Český Krumlov and also flows through Prague). After picking up some snacks for the journey we were quickly in our raft, beginning our journey by lazily navigating our way around the city. There are a few weirs (engineered channels for rafts and canoes) at places where the river is otherwise not easily navigable. These channels have a bit of an amusement park feel and generally result in the front of the boat getting a good splash at the bottom of the ramp. Already a bit wet, we quickly left the city behind and were drifting through beautiful rural areas. ... read more

Today I left Prague and headed about 3 hours south into the Southern Bohemian Region to a place I would discover is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited. No wonder it was Unesco World Heritage listed in 1992. The place is beautiful in a real picture postcard way. The guy at the Prague hostel advised me it would not be necessary to book the Student Agency intercity coach as it was mid-week and there are not many tourists around. Well apparently he had not heard that the whole population of Japan was visiting the Czech Republic and they had chosen today to transfer from Prague to Cesky Krumlov - just like me. However, unlike me, their accommodation (probably quite a step up from my humble hostel) had advised them to pre-purchase tickets. ... read more
