It was off to Prague bright and early on the bus with Dax. We stopped off on the way at Terrizen Concentration camp for a tour and a look at what really went down in these Nazi run playgrounds. Its hard to believe that humans could actually treat other human beings this way...The cells were tiny and dark and the conditions were undescribable. We even got to see the execution grounds were their was a deadly feeling in the air...All together it was a really confronting experience and tis so hard to believe all this went down only 50 odd years ago. We pushed on though and it was onto Plus Prague Hostel. The hostel had its own pool, resteraunt and bar and was a pretty cool place to stay. Entering Prague you could tell we ... read more

Today was another travel day. I left Cesky Krumlov this morning, anticipating another stay at the garage-like station in Cesky Budejovice where I had to make a transfer again. But no need - this transfer was at the main station. The main station had such frivolities as multiple tracks, an enclosed area, food sales and workers (actually it was quite normal). What a huge difference. While I was there, I went into one of the nearby stores to find a replacement jacket. I figured with food as cheap as it is here, maybe I could find a cheap jacket. Wrong. 5,700 koronas ($345) for a Marmot soft shell jacket. I’ll pass. The rides themselves were uneventful. I got into Prague this evening and took the metro and tram to the hostel. Along the way, I was ... read more

So we didn't do much yesterday before the bike tour. Just people watched and showed Gina some of the town. The bike tour, Praha Bike, started at 5:30pm. There were only 7 of us. My group of 5 and 2 girls from Minnesota/Chicago. They had also came over from Munich so we shared Oktoberfest stories. The tour started out rough. We all got ponchos because it started to drizzle. David, our tour guide, took us over the river and made us carry our bikes up a few flights of stairs. Not fun. We were all winded only 10 minutes into the tour! Poor Gina hasn't ridden on a bike for a while and was not understanding the bike gears and therefore was peddling really fast and not getting anywhere. She ended up walking her bike up ... read more

Sunday morning we started the drive to Prague. It was quite a way to go in old Jonsey so for the sake of him and our boredom levels we decided to break the journey up and sleep at a roadstop that night. Monday we woke up early and continued our drive. As we crossed the Czech border it wasn't border control or signs that alerted us to the new country but the horrible bumpy roads! As we made our way to the campsite we bounced and jumped and banged in pot holes that littered every inch of the roads. After going on the longest wild goose chase due to never ending roadworks, finally we made it to the campsite, only to see that it was closed for the year and when we checked the GPS we ... read more

Yikes, a quick flight 750km north to Prague and I've gone straight from summer to autumn. It was unusual to be in Prague without constant sunshine and hot weather, but the three days here have been cold and dull. Beer in the square just isn't the same when it's chilly. On top of this, most of the bridge is undergoing renovation, ruining any photographic opportunities. Nevertheless, it was great to be back in Prague and nice to be in a familiar place that you don't need to explore completely in a few days. The off-season has also kept the crowds down a little, have never seen the castle so empty. Spent the days wandering around the Old Town, Jewish Quarter, Mala Strana and the riverbank, seeing familiar places and some new spots like Slav Island and ... read more

Prague, Czech Republic Monday, September 21, 2009 Oh, Golden City, how you can enchant a simple country boy from North Carolina. I speak, of course, of Prague, the former capitol of Bohemia and current capitol of the Czech Republic. As part of this rest break, I decided to break out of my comfort zone (countries where I can at least halfway read the signs and know enough language to muddle about) to venture into some new territory. Since the 1990s, Prague has been a big hit on the backpacker circuit both because of the mystery of it being a former Soviet satellite state as well as the relatively low cost of visiting the city. So out of the Euro Zone I headed on Thursday for a 4 night stay in the Golden City. First of all, ... read more

We had a 4 day break in Prague at the end of June. We had a great time. We loved it. We didn't do too much ... except to walk, and walk, and walk and walk -- actually we really overdid the walking, I estimate 20-30 kilometers a day -- was pretty exhausted at the end -- crawled back to our hotel every night, falling into bed, groaning in pain. Even took a bath, using those bath salts the hotels always give you and that I never use. I think it helped a bit. By the end of the 4 days, I was feeling better and just about ready to climb mountains. We also took a day trip to Dresden -- so got to recover a bit before our evening run up to the castle and ... read more

We love love love Prag! The most beautiful city we have been to sofar! It is just amazing! We took the metro to Josefov, the jewish part of town and walked around admiring the sinagoges. Then we explored the Old Town and watched the play of the Astronomic Clock. The gothic church was beautiful and we loved every little corner there. We walked around and found art nouveau style buildings aswell as an old monastery. There, we bought art nouveau postcards and decided we had to see the Alfons Mucha Museum, who is the art nouveau pioneer. We walked along the water and crossed over to the Metronom from where we had a beautiful view over the whole city. The Prag castle near by, we sat at the St Nicholas church reading the tour book one ... read more

I was awake early this morning after a reasonable sleep. Being in the roof of the hotel means it attracts the heat of the day and it stayed hot until at least 2am. Breakfast in the hotel was passable, though the staff were far from friendly. Not that they were nasty it was more that they found if difficult to muster a smile. Having witnessed the crowds of the evening before I decided to head off to the old town square before the masses. The Old Town Square's most notable sights are the Church of Our Lady before Tyn and the Old Town Hall Tower & Astronomical Clock . I entered to church (along with a few other earlier risers) only to discover that the seats inside were roped off and a craggy old character was ... read more

I arrive at Berlin’s Hauptbahnhof train station the largest crossing station in Europe, in plenty of time for my train journey from Berlin to Prague. The trip takes just over four hours and it gives me a chance to write another blog entry. The old, portly German gentleman rolled his eyes and his wife smiled as I arrive in the first class carriage of the train. It was obvious to him that there was a problem, there was no space for my larger suitcase, however between him, and the three other passengers in the cabin we managed to make room. Every German I have met has been courteous even more so once they realise I am a visitor to their country. The Euro City (EC) train was not new and having experienced other train journeys within ... read more
