In May 2009, when my company eliminated my team, I decided to take considerable time off from the working world and pursue a lifelong dream - travel the world. This is my travel journal.

Finally, a good night’s sleep. It’s taken two weeks but I finally slept. And slept I (and Dave) did. Through the night. The late morning. Part of the afternoon. About the only times either of us were up were to relieve upset stomachs, get breakfast and let the maid in to freshen up. The maid had to be in for a real treat when she came in to clean. She was greeted by my pile of stuff at the foot of my bed then, after making her way to the bathroom, she must have discovered the leftover wash water in the bucket from laundering my pants last night. The wash bucket that is used to hold clean water for people’s use in lieu of toilet paper. The wash bucket that at this moment held a mass ... read more

3:24 am: “This is a terrible night.” Dave proclaimed as he shuffled into our bathroom. Again. Apparently for the second time tonight. I had slept through his first episode of diarrhea and forced vomiting. With his mention of this, I noticed a bit of a disturbance in my stomach. As he got settled down again, we heard a disturbance in the bathroom. He sat up, put on his headlamp and said “Stay here. I think there‘s a rat in the bathroom.” He carefully went in, looked around but fortunately discovered nothing. Maybe it was something upstairs. What a way to end our trek. And I had actually gotten some sleep before this, with really strange dreams and even dreams explaining to Dave the strange dreams I just had. We got up on schedule - of course ... read more

Lukla, Nepal Altitude at start of day: 2,800 meters / 9,184 feet Last night I finally had dreams so I must have slept a little. At least I feel more refreshed than I have for the past week. And my sinuses finally seem to be clearing up. However, after another night of mouth breathing, I did awaken with a tongue that felt like sandpaper. I can't wait for that issue to be gone. After grabbing breakfast we set out on our last day of trekking. It ended up being a very easy day. The weather was warm and the skies and scenery beautiful as we walked from small town to small town. Along the way we met a Canadian man who claims to work for the largest Saudi Arabian oil company. He is apparently here doing ... read more

Phakding, Nepal Altitude at start of day: 3,440 meters / 11,284 feet “Good sleep?” This is the way every morning's first conversation with Ram goes. Dave will agree. I'll usually say good enough but not much sleep. Last night was more of the same - another night of quantity over quality. Before that, Hari will appear at our door, often times while we're still in bed or have just gotten up and started packing. “Good morning sirs! You have bags for me?” “Not yet, Hari. Ten minutes.” “Okay.” In five minutes he'll come back to check on us. Of course we're still not ready. We need the ten minutes to get everything packed away from the night before. Today, we finally had everything together in time for him. He was so excited. I went into the ... read more

Namche Bazar, Nepal Altitude at start of day: 3,985 meters / 13,071 feet My sinuses are better today, or at least not as bad (which isn't saying much). I think the dust we keep kicking up is perpetuating the problem, making for somewhat unpleasant days of trekking. Even though they have improved, my ability to sleep hasn't. I've spent the last several nights in a sort of slumber purgatory; not really awake nor asleep. I just kind of lay there with my eyes shut, hoping that does the trick. The cold has not yet subsided. While our waters have not frozen it remains cool in our rooms. I've had enough of the cold. When I get home I'm moving someplace warm like Key West or Cuba. After our breakfast we set out on our morning trek, ... read more

Pangboche, Nepal Altitude at start of day: 5,200 meters / 17,056 feet The day started early, as we were up at 4:45 so we could leave between 5:00 and 5:15 to go to Kalapattar in time for the sunrise. We were ready but couldn't find Ram or Hari. At 5:25 we witnessed something emerge from Ram's room. It looked like a much more horrible version of Ram. He obviously wasn't feeling well. Despite his state, a few minutes later, the four of us departed for Kalapattar. This is the coldest weather we have experienced, aided by the wind in our faces the entire way up. Let me clarify this just a bit: the water in Dave's Nalgene bottle turned to ice within 45 minutes of departing the lodge. This is also a very tough hike, even ... read more

Gorak Shep, Nepal Altitude at start of day: 4,900 meters / 16,072 feet To continue my diatribe from yesterday on my displeasure with the state of our Lobuche accommodations, our room is smaller than the others so far. Above us is an attempt at a skylight which, by daybreak, had pooled some just melted water above that began to drip down onto Dave's bed. Upon seeing this, Dave said, “We better hurry up. This room is about to flood.” To make things worse, above my bed is a hole about eight inches in diameter, plenty of room for a rat to crawl through and land on my bed. Even the door is a mess. It was broken at some point in the past and rather than getting a new one the owners patched what was the ... read more

Lobuche, Nepal Altitude at start of day: 4,270 meters / 14,006 feet Dave is feeling better today. With the addition of Diamox to his daily routine, the symptoms of AMS have subsided. Unfortunately he has been less able to kick a nagging stomach bug and, as such, Ram put us on strict food and water restrictions for the rest of the way up - no more eggs and cheese, limited cooking oil, only boiled and iodine tabbed water. This is going to be tough. I need some form of protein. This pretty much leaves potatoes, noodles and rice. Starch city. We set out on our trek this morning to try again for Lobuche. In the first few minutes of our day we learned that the sick guide passed away last night. It's really crazy to think ... read more

Pheriche, Nepal Altitude at start of day: 4,620 meters / 15,154 feet The cold weather is wreaking havoc on my sinuses which resulted in an awful night's sleep. It feels like October but at more of an extreme - every October the temperature changes irritate them. However, while my sinuses were a mess, the rest of me was quite warm, partially as a result of Dave's hot water bottle idea. First thing this morning Dave seemed to be doing a little better but still lacked an appetite and had some coughing and breathing issues. That left him no alternative but to descend. I had a choice - join him or part ways, leaving him with Hari to descend, and continue ascending with Ram. Yesterday I wrote that I could not put my own gratification above his ... read more
