I successfully wrapped up my all nighter last night and, after a rejuvenating shower, made my way to the airport. Finding a cab at 5:30 in the morning proved to be a bit challenging but, after a lot of gesturing, the second driver I found agreed to take me to the central station where I could catch a bus to the airport. When I reached the bus terminal, I came upon a shuttle driver who offered to take me to the airport in his half full shuttle. Haggling the cost down to the same as the bus and feeling somewhat safe that this guy was legit (there were other passengers and he probably just wanted to fill empty seats) I got on board and made my way to the airport with plenty of time to spare. ... read more

I got another good night’s sleep, waking at 9:00 am after going to bed late. I’m hopefully starting to shift back to home time. I spent a bit of the morning online recapping the last couple days and preparing for my last day of touring. My first stop was on the grounds of the National Theatre, National Concert Hall and National Taiwan Democracy Memorial Hall. I started off at the theatre, which is very fitting for the area. Across from it is the concert hall which looked much the same. Between the two, looking to the east is the large monument dedicated to the establishment of democracy in Taiwan. When I got to this, I had just missed a changing of the guard ceremony but did get to see a few guards standing completely still like ... read more

What kind of idiots do you have working here? The finest in New York. - Exchange between Kate McCallister and a desk clerk in Home Alone 2 While I had another early wakeup, I managed to get back to sleep and ended up having a good bit of rest. I am finally refreshed. The only thing I had to accomplish this morning was to take care of my accommodations for the next two nights in Taipei. This proved to be quite the challenge. I’ve had to go outside to get an Internet connection and did the same today. Last night I had emailed the hostel I stayed in before but they hadn’t gotten back to me yet. I checked online and it turned out this place was booked. So I had to find another option. At ... read more

I had another early wakeup today, even earlier at 4:45. I did, however, manage to get back to sleep until 8:00 and finally feel somewhat refreshed. I’d need that today as I would be all over Kaohsiung. After a quick breakfast at 7-11, I made my way up to Lotus Pond, a few miles north of the city center. At Lotus Pond, I visited the large Confucius Temple and walked around the large man-made lake, seeing several pagodas along the way. At the end opposite the Confucius Temple, I climbed up both the dragon and tiger towers and was treated to views overlooking the pond from six stories above. I took the MRT (subway) back into the city and walked through Central Park on my way back to the apartment. At the apartment I regrouped for ... read more

At their developmental stage, most children learn a new word every day. I’ve been in Taiwan two days and today learned my second word. My first - Ni hao (hello). My second - Xie xie, pronounced schi schi (thanks). Something tells me the traditional child will outpace me after this. I left Taipei this morning for Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s second largest city. Before going to the station, I grabbed a couple pastries at a local bakery. The first must have had some sort of scallion in it. I love the taste but that’s not the flavor with which I hoped to start the day. At the station, my planning worked well as everything went without a hitch. The train ride itself also went smooth. I spent much of my time reading and looking to see what highlights ... read more

This morning I departed Hong Kong for Taipei, Taiwan (the Republic of China, not to be confused with the People‘s Republic of China, or just China, as we know it in the United States). I really wished I hadn’t booked my onward ticket so soon as I didn’t have nearly enough time here. I really enjoyed Hong Kong as it reminded me a lot of New York City. Many travelers to Asia would poo poo this view, saying that Hong Kong has no real Asian feel. They’re right, and perhaps that’s why I enjoyed it so much. While it’s been very interesting and rewarding discovering a new part of the world, I certainly like the familiarity of the developed world from where I come. My flight went smoothly, as did the arrival process in Taipei. I ... read more

The effects, I presume, of my lunch yesterday carried into today as I awoke with my stomach not feeling 100%. Setting conventional wisdom aside and opting for something similar to the alcoholic treatment - viz., nothing gets you over a hangover like having another beer - I opted to go out for dim sum, a lunch time specialty, for breakfast. Following yesterday’s dim sum exploration debacle, Wendy was kind enough to send me a recommendation for a dim sum place called Star Seafood which is near my hostel. For a moment I had a bit of trouble finding it; like most things that are right under your nose. It was too easy; in fact, it was housed in the same building as my hostel, but up a floor or two. Why the hostel worker didn’t just ... read more

Another day, another poor night’s sleep. I’m now having dreams about waking up early, followed by actually waking up. Maybe it’s the Agency. I tried to go back to sleep but it wasn’t good. Today I would spend the bulk of my day in Kowloon, across the bay from Hong Kong Island. I took the ferry across very rocky waters (I can’t believe no one is leaning over the side of the boat on these) and was treated to the beautiful skyline in daylight. My first stop was the Avenue of Stars which is a sort of Hollywood Walk of Fame for Chinese stars (it also provides spectacular views of the skyline). I hadn’t heard of most of the stars until I reached Bruce Lee’s and Jackie Chan’s stars, which were side by side. I also ... read more

What’s a guy gotta do to get some sleep? I had yet another early wakeup. I think my body is just used to waking up before 6:00 now. Even the time change from Vietnam to Hong Kong (+1 hour) hasn’t helped. It’s no one’s fault but my own: no one has been noisy or disrespectful but it’s still really annoying. Before setting out on my long walk covering the northern part of Hong Kong Island, I had my weekly call with my parents and breakfast at Café de Coral, recommended by Finn and Wendy. They had a mix of Asian and western breakfast. I went with eggs and ham (which was more like spam). The eggs were really good, almost seeming a bit creamy like they added milk to the mix. My walk (pretty much designed ... read more

I’m getting sick of writing this - and more so of doing this - I was up way too early again. I didn’t need to be up until 7:00 so when I awoke at 5:45 I was ticked. As always, there was no chance of my getting back to sleep. Yet another six hour night. I left Ha Noi this morning to depart Vietnam and go to Hong Kong. On my way to the airport - with horns honking all around me, especially from my cab driver - I acknowledged that I will not miss this city at all. If I ever return here, I think I might follow through with what I often thought I’d do on a Sunday morning at my New York City apartment. Many times I was tempted to take a few ... read more
