So Believe it or not Catherine and I did spend most of our time in Prague. There is sooooo much to do and see and I could not believe it when we only had half a day left to visit the main square. Wenceslas Square, named after the patron saint of Bohemia is part of the historic centre of Prague, a World Heritage Site. It is a traditional setting for demonstrations, celebrations, and other public gatherings. At its centre stands the National Museum, which we rang out of time to visit, and a very large statue of Wenceslas. But what is most captivating of all is the astronomical clock hidden around the corner. It's attached to the side of the Town Hall and very hour a procession of twelve Apostles appear along with a death ringing ... read more

PRAHA Day 45 Today I woke up to a lot of snow. The most snow I have seen in a long while, which I found a little exciting. It was the big fluffy snow flakes that fall really slowly when it isn’t to cold outside so you don’t mind being out to watch them fall. So I happily, I think I was the only happy person in all of Czech to see the snow fall, walked about town kicking up the snow and sticking out my tongue to catch the fat flakes. My first stop was the old town square. There are many beautiful buildings there including the very interesting astronomical clock. I decided not to stand around and wait for the clock to do its fancy moving parts bit. I watched the glockenspiel in ... read more

PRAHA Day 44 I took the mid-day train to Prague. On the train I sat with this lady who did not speak any English. We communicated through my few Czech words. In the end she gave me a little flower/lady bug decoration, which I stuck to the back of my phone. I gave her one of my Canada pens, which are beginning to run low. I finally made it to Prague and it is a really beautiful city, many old buildings with big sculptures all over the tops. Since it was late in the day when I arrived I decided to get settled in the hostel grab dinner and plan my following day. ... read more

It has been a mostly easy 4 days in the Czech Republic. Catherine (work collegue from Bannockburn Primary and now trusted english friend) and I planned a leisurely mid week trek to fit in with another mid term break from school. A smooth sailing one and a half hour flight landed us in Prague and finding our way to the hostel was soooooo easy. We had to meet the guy from the hostel at another hostel.... not sure why, but we were nicely entertained while we waited to be collected by a load of cute men (or should I say boys) walking around in tiny towels and Calvin Klien underwear. If this was Prague I was going to be a very happy girl!! As we were peeled away from our midday entertainment I soon discovered that ... read more

27/12/2009 After action packed week we hit road again bound for Prague. Having searched for the cheapest flights we ended up having to fly from Birmingham with Ryan Air. The budget of budget airlines! With a couple day packs we caught the train from a frosty and desolate Clapham junction to Birmingham International with some pastry's from Sainsburys to get us there. After a hour delay we made it to Prague. From the airport we caught bus, metro and a tram surprisingly effortlessly to Hotel William our pad for the next three nights. Bundled up in gloves, scarfs and thermals we headed out in search of the Beer Hall pictures we'd spotted at our hotel. Despite the empty hall we agreed it was time to trial the famous Czech beer, and it was delicious. We moved ... read more

Day One December is Eastern Europe at its most forbidding, yet here we are, barreling towards Karlovy Vary (or Carlsbad, as it was formerly called) to take the waters at the largest spa town in the Czech Republic. We have put all our trust in Camilla Parker Bowles, the name we have given to our GPS navigational system. In her genteel British accent, she routes us through the countryside, avoiding all the highways. We think Camilla's on her best behaviour since, reluctant in Amsterdam, she turned truly belligerent in Paris. Ron claimed she was suffering from satellite triangulation problems but I've been thinking she would benefit from hormone replacement therapy. A few kilometres west of Prague, suddenly frisky, she decides to take us on ... read more

"The lost reign over your affairs will return to you people, it will return." ~Line from the 1968 protest song 'Prayer for Marta' by Marta Kubišová . Over the last few weeks we have watched on TV as neighbouring countries celebrated 20 years since communism fell - the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the revolutions in Poland and Hungary. Today it was the Czech Republics turn - 20 years since the Velvet Revolution that ended the communist regime here. We were determined to go into the old town where people were re-enacting the mostly peaceful ('velvet') protest march of 1989, just so we could say we were there. We certainly didn't expect it to impact us in the way it did - probably the most moving cultural experience we have had during our time in ... read more

Hello Everyone! Things here have been pretty exciting- I've just returned from a week in Dresden (Eastern Germany) and Prague (Czech Republic) and a week ago from Malmö (Sweden). I have a new appreciation for the size of europe- pretty much wherever I want to go on the continent or in the UK, the plane ride takes approximately an hour. Seriously. To Prague it was an hour. To Dublin its an hour. To Copenhagen its an hour. I really really like the travel capabilities. Sweden Irmela and I stayed for five days with a good friend of hers , Lotta Hamfelt , in an apartment complex extremely near to the ocean. Malmö is a very beautiful city and I even had the chance to attend school with one of her sons, Thomas who also spoke german ... read more

Since i wrote last i have done the whole northern loop. From Paris we went to Bruges. which is a little medievil type town that doesn really have much to do. There is a quote from the movie In Bruges that goes a little soething like this.... "Ken, I grew up in Dublin. I love Dublin. If I grew up on a farm, and was retarded, Bruges might impress me but I didn , so it doesn ." but one thing it does have going for it is the FOOD! glorious food.. Firstly belgium invented the fritz or fries as we like to call them. and there are two main caravan chip sellers that have been competing for years over whose are the besst so naturally we had to try both. And the belgium waffles.. AMAZING! ... read more

All right.. so the first month while we were here... we going on trips to other Czech towns, exploring the city of Prague, and of course Czech intensive class.. Now the real classes have begun. I just finished my third week of classes. Well, for me it was the second because I skipped the first week to go to Poland :) I am very lucky to like all my classes because most of my friends have at least one class they don't like. So what classes am I taking? Jewish History in Eastern and Central Europe. This class is sooo interesting.. My professor is actually not Czech, but French! She is great.. And whenever she says something negative about the US, she starts it off with a disclaimer.. "I'm not saying this because I'm French but.." ... read more
