I hope that everyone had wonderful holidays, and wish all a happy new year! My Christmas was very very lovely- over the break, we had snow (all of my friends were AMAZED) and German Christmas was quite a bit different than I was used to. First of all, and my favorite, was that they use actual CANDLES to light up the tree! (no, Frau B was not lying to you all AP German haha) Santa does not actually come on Christmas Eve- but don't worry, America! he was there on the 6th of December. There are also two days of Christmas- the 25th and 26th are both celebrated with family, food, and good cheer. Presents are opened on Christmas Eve, and church services are also on the 24th. For New Year's, I got to go to ... read more

Things have been pretty calm here lately- a few small excursions during the weekends, last weekend to Münster which was a very beautiful little university town with a heck of a lot of old churches. While there we saw a lot of the town as well as visiting the Zoo, and learning some bizarre animal names, for example 'Meerkat' translates to 'Erdmann' = " earth man" and that 'Seal'='Robbe' however most of the names were pretty familiar. In the next weekends, I have a lot planned- Next weekend I'm cooking Thanksgiving Dinner, the weekend after that the rotary exchange students are spending in Aachen, going to christmas markets and ice skating. The weekend before Christmas I hope to be able to visit Maureen (an exchange student to my hometown last year) in Belgium! I'm very excited! ... read more

Hello Everyone! Things here have been pretty exciting- I've just returned from a week in Dresden (Eastern Germany) and Prague (Czech Republic) and a week ago from Malmö (Sweden). I have a new appreciation for the size of europe- pretty much wherever I want to go on the continent or in the UK, the plane ride takes approximately an hour. Seriously. To Prague it was an hour. To Dublin its an hour. To Copenhagen its an hour. I really really like the travel capabilities. Sweden Irmela and I stayed for five days with a good friend of hers , Lotta Hamfelt , in an apartment complex extremely near to the ocean. Malmö is a very beautiful city and I even had the chance to attend school with one of her sons, Thomas who also spoke german ... read more

So in the next two weeks, school is out for Fall Break. I will be traveling to Malmö, Sweden for five days, and following that three days in Dresden, Germany and a few days in Prague, Czech Republic. I hope to have some exiting blog entries throughout the next few weeks, but just wanted to keep you all updated. School is getting easier all the time- On friday, I wrote a small essay about Genetics in German and also took a Biology test. I have found a cello group to play with, and am beginning to feel settled in to life in Germany. This week I also got a chance to hang out in the Innenstadt with some of the other Rotary Inbounds, which was a real treat. I hope that all of you are doing ... read more

My blog is early this week, because I simply had to tell everybody about this family outing! My hostfamily and I went to the Circus this evening- Although it was more like Cirque de Soleil, but german and a little less eloquent and a little more rock. They had all sorts of jugglers, trapeze etc. as well as your average motorbike in a big round cage trick- but with flic flac it's not one or two guys in the cage, no no. There were first three, then five and finally seven!!! They also had a very entertaining Scottish comedian and some very good eastern european gymnasts. You can check out their site (unfortunately it's in german) at www.flicflac.de Last weekend the Koln-Hahnentor Rotary Club invited me and my hostfamily to join them in Altenberg for a ... read more

Hello again everybody! I arrived in Cologne exactly a week ago today. The flights were uneventful and we were able to navigate the train system sucessfully (and yes, they do actually go an average of 165 km/s which is about 100mph). The first night we had dinner in the Stadtmitte Fuβgangerzone (the middle of the city on the Rhine) and had a lovely view of the Cathedral as well as some local fare. At first the plan was for me to attend a course at a local language school however after my first day they said that I should just go straight to the normal school as the lessons were not doing me much good. Therefore on Wednesday I had my first day of school at the Kreuzgasse Gymnasium in Cologne (www.kreuzgasse.de) after a little bit ... read more
