The weather in Prague is perfect for November Wow, slept through the night and woke up at 8:30AM to glorious sunshine. We walked to the Palladium (a shopping mall of 200 stores) to have a cup of coffee and free WiFi at Starbucks. I wouldn't normally go to Starbucks in Europe as I love European coffee shops (stay tuned for a story about that), but I feel the need to check my business emails and Travel Blog. All is well at home, so we head to the Billa grocery store 1 minute from the hotel for a deli lunch and bottled water. You have to be really careful of the pricing in Prague. You can eat very economically or be totally ripped off, which I think is true of most cities in the world. I bought ... read more

The Flight to Europe The flight from Vancouver to Amsterdam was uneventful, dinner offerings where beef or vegetarian pasta. Cabin crew were pleasant, and because it was a night flight we were left alone (or to stare blankly into the dark because I can NEVER sleep). If you wanted water or juice you had to go to the galley and retrieve. I think I like it better that way, especially if you like to get up and stretch, you aren't bumping into a flight attendant. The flight was smooth UNTIL our descent into Amsterdam, which was encountering a great storm of winds and rain. Now I have to ask myself (and any of you commercial pilots reading this), when you get home for dinner after a day of flying, does your spouse ask you how was ... read more

So I'm finally in Prague. The ride here actually wasn't bad at all. I took a bus with Autobus Oberbayern, it was an amazing deal and I would recommend the company. The ride was only 6 hours from Munich and I got an awesome seat on the bus with a great view. It was a double decker bus and since I got there really early I got a seat on the top of the bus right in the front so I could see out the top windshield. I couldn't sleep on the bus, as usual, but the trip went really well. The countryside the whole way there was really beautiful. We passed a lot of beautiful small towns, rivers, and then through a few Czech towns. Crossing the border into the Czech Republic was just like ... read more

One late evening we noticed that Old Town Square was being decorated. Since we had seen Christmas lights going up in part of the city, we had a brief thought that perhaps the Christmas Fair was going up REALLY early this year. Our next trip was in daylight and it was apparent that this was instead a celebration of the Harvest Season. The decorations had a fall or harvest look to them. We were delighted to learn that no matter what celebration goes on in Old Town Square the majority of the exhibits are of good Czech food. One of our favorite foods in the square at times like this is the chicken kabobs. Chicken, onions, sweet red pepper on a stick and grilled over a charcoal fire. It is good eating. I, Bill, have been ... read more

Day 17-Prague 9/2-Wednesday We had overcast weather again today. We started the day with a group tour of the Little Quarter. The first stop was the Wallenstein Palace Garden, the largest and most beautiful garden in the neighborhood. Aside the garden was the most unusual wall. It was an artificial wall of stalactites. Embedded were a few strange looking faces. We never heard the meaning of this wall. After the garden we walked up through the Little Quarter towards the Charles Bridge. As we walked we spotted an interesting courtyard of a restaurant with two mechanical men working as a fountain. The hips of the men rotated from left to right as the men seemed to be urinating into the pool. Instead of being an adults only we could see a “Children’s Zone.” I guess their ... read more

Day 16-Prague 9/01-Tuesday We had overcast weather today with an occasional break with clear skies. We toured in the morning with the entire group in the Castle Quarter above the west side of the Vltava River. This is where we saw the Prague Castle and the St. Vitus Catherdral. The castle is still considered a royal palace and thus is guarded by sentry. After the Castle Quarter, our tour moved down to the Old Town. We passed through the Jewish Quarter to the Old Town Square. There are lots to see in this area with monuments, churches and the Astronomical Clock. The tour group was walking from the Square to the Powder Tower on their way back to the hotel on the Metro. We chose to drop out and do our own thing. We had lunch ... read more

On the hour Old Town Clock performs. There is always a large crowd gathered to watch. Figures move, doors open, apostles pass in review, death rings a bell as time waits for no man and the rooster crows as the performance ends. It is always fascinating to watch. It is one of the top draws for all visitors to Prague. It is one of the must stops for all tour groups. Tour guide's umbrellas and flags can be see raised in the air as they attempt to keep their individual groups together and not lose too many tourists in the crowd. For the most part they seem to succeed. The oldest part of the clock dates back to 1410. Wow, 600 years ago and still working, though a great amount of maintenance has been done through ... read more
