Prague is one of Europe's most beautiful cities ... a big part of it due to it not being bombed to bits in the 2nd European conflagaration of the 20th century. Prague is a wonderful walking city. We got disoriented the first day, and end up taking the long way to the old city ... but from then on, we quickly learnt all the short cuts to the various sites we wanted to visit.... read more

So after a great visit to Berlin including a surprise gift from Claudia of attending the Saturday evening performance, of the theatrical show, Yma, at the Freidrich Platz Theatre. No english required as it was a mix of Russian Circus style acrobats, meets Cirque de Soliel, mixed with Moulin Rouge, a sprinkling of Techno and break dancers with music and singing as well. Unusual but highly entertaining. Sunday AM....... No retail therapy, it's all closed even in Berlin........so we dash about seeing some sights, like the Olympic Stadium of 1932, Schloss Charlotteberg, home of Frederik the Great, amongst others. Waving good bye to Clauds and U at around 5.30pm, it's off to Dresden by train, 2hours away. Our hotel is opposite the HauptBahnHof (main station) and at 8.30pm, after refreshing ourselves, the search for food and ... read more

August 26th- Today, we had a lie in (sleep in) at least a little bit.  We both needed a few extra winks today. By the time we got our breakfast and got our the door, it was 10am.  (A side note about the Hotel Davinci beds... Mom loves them. To me, they feel like you are lying on a piece of plywood.) We headed immediately for the Castle side of the river. We started at a Franciscan Monastery and wondered thru several churches on our the way to the Castle. Once at the Castle, we purchased a ticket to go into several of the Castle buildings, including the Old Royal Palace, St. Vittas Cathedral, and The Golden Lane. We took a few hours and took a gawk at these buildings. I was able to grab some ... read more

August 25th-Our morning began with the hotel breakfast. Our hopes were high for a new winner in the Hotel Breakfast Category, but the Park Inn Danube in Bratislava is still in the lead by a lot. The breakfast was good and then we headed out to meet our next tour. We signed up for a Castle and Jewish Quarter tour. We lucked out with a smart tour guide, Blanca, and a small tour (7 in total with Blanca). We met the group at the Charles Bridge and quickly got going. We headed over the bridge as Blanca explained some of the features of this 14th Century bridge. Every ten feet or so, there is a Saint Statue and there are "crap" vendors and street performers competing for your attention. We did stop by the statue of ... read more

August 24- An early morning wakeup call (5:30am) was in order to get us up and moving in time to make our train to Prague. We were out the door by 6:30 and at the train station before 7am. We tucked ourselves into our private, first class cabin and were on our way. (A side note... our learning curve on the trains has been somewhat slow, but we are finally getting the idea of actually using the first class train pass and taking full advantage of the extra leg room and private cabins) We rode this train for about 2 hours, before making a train switch at the Czech border. The second train was not as nice and the cooling system didn't work. We both got drowsy on the ride and woke up sweating (a theme ... read more

Waddup followers, JPhill here, blogging from Andy's Laundry Mat in Prague..Beaz and I are SOOO stoked to get some fresh gear especially since I'm pretty sure I've worn the same set of boxers and socks for the past three days (no joke). Prague is a muggy city, similar to London, and much warmer than Amsterdam or Berlin and we've been sticky and sweaty ever since we arrived...I've come to realize that deodorant and AXE body spray, even when combined, unfortunately has its limits. From the serene canals and smoke-filled coffee shops in "I AMsterdam" to the hipster techno Beats in Berlin and the soaring castles and cathedrals of Praha, our travels abroad have been filled TONS of excitement! In a couple hours we'll be catching an overnight train to Interlaken, Switzerland to get in some outdoor ... read more

hello all, as promised, writing from prague, just out of old town and fresh from prague castle {which was more like the rich district plus a wall but still} prague definitely lives up to my expectations, every building even in the new city is beautiful. went out for the best meal of the trip so far with ''moravian sparraw'' {pork} risotto and a massive roast duck for me. even with it costing over mick and phill's sparrows put together it still only came to about 10 pounds {the price of a sandwich in brussells}. heres hoping to repeat the trick tonight! apologies about no pictures, have yet to see an sd card slot. next update from budapest. all are well and happy. see you all soon james etc ... read more

Hello my faithful readers, if you do in fact exist, thank you for being so faithful, if you are in fact that. I am in currently in the beautiful city of Prague - YAY!! I arrived yesterday on the train, and fortunately my hostel was kind enough to not include the directions from the main station to their location. So i got off the main train, got lost for a while, walked around, and eventually got on the metro and figured out how to get to the place after asking many people for help. But one guy did send me through a beautiful garden and i quite enjoyed that, although i did get many strange stares as i trekked through the beautiful gardens with my massive backpack with a rather distressed look on my face. haha! ... read more

Of incredible beauty and depressing decay Just when we thought we could not stand another cathedral or ruin, we had to change our position as we were at first surprised by the medieval beauty of Bratislava, and then completely blown away seemingly endless array of castles, cathedrals and opulent public buildings of Budapest. Both cities suffered heavy damage during the war and there has been a huge amount of rebuilding, some in the original style, some post war and some very modern. Offsetting the incredible beauty of the restored/maintained historical buildings are just as many that are sadly falling into decay, such is the pity. A major theme given prominence by the guide in Budapest was the period of occupation and repression under the communist regime. There was a great deal of passion in her voice ... read more

We set alarms (not too early!) so that we would have time to pack up and get some breakfast before departure. We seem to be starting a new tradition this year, as here too the hotel safe malfunctioned and we required assistance from the hotel staff to retrieve our passports. We returned to Lukac’s (the coffeehouse right around the corner from our hotel) for coffee and pastries and then checked out. We were picked up by our shuttle bus for the five hour drive to Český Krumlov. Although it was supposed to be just our family in the van for the drive, the driver received a redirection as we reached Vienna (about the mid-point of the drive). We were a bit disappointed with the change of plans, but enjoyed re-viewing many of the sites we had ... read more
