Here were are on the north coast of Honduras.... in the little town of Tela. Not much to this place really.... kinda small and pokey. Well, most of the towns along the north coast of Honduras are just that. But, one really feels as though they are off the beaten track when they are here... especially that of mainstream tourism. Actually, even the backpacker trail seems to run a little thin in this part of the country. Well, back in Copan we ended with a bang by enjoying a morning of ziplining through the forest canopy. It was priceless... truly!! The kids had a blast... though Riel was nervous at the start (hell, so was I). But... when it was all over we wanted to drive back to the top of the hills and start it ... read more

Our last evening in Antigua was spent with our new travelling companions, 5 others plus a trip leader, ie. the man who´s going to book all the buses and sort all the hotels for us. That doesn´t mean he holds our hands and shepherds us around and we´ve got plenty of time to do our own thing too. I was still not feeling too good so was straight to bed after dinner for an early start the next morning. The minibus to take us just across the border into Honduras left around 7am. Luckily, being a small group we had quite a bit of room as it was a few hours to Copan Ruinas, a small colonial town (yes, another one!) just across the border, most well known for its proximity to Copan, another large Mayan ... read more

Tela and Omoa are located at Hundoras Bay not so much away from the Bay Islands. The water is nice especially at Omoa, where it gets a green color due to the high vegitation. The beaches are covered with black sand. The trip itself, especially between Omoa and Guatemala boarder is a very nice ride through Guatemala´s rain forest. I would say the best nature and vegitation I have seen so far. After spending about a week in Hundoras, I am happy to be back in Guatemala this time heading towards Livingstone. ... read more

Río Dulce After a wonderful week in San Andrés, we climbed back on the gringo trail and headed for the Honduran border. Our last stop in Guatemala was Río Dulce (Sweet River). It was a cramped and dirty town, centered around tourist buses and street stalls tightly packed on the only road in town - it was a very drastic change after our week in sleepy, non-touristy San Andrés. We took a small motor boat across Lago de Izabel (which empties into the river) to our hostel - a bamboo and thatch complex with a bit of a tiki-bar vibe. It was fun to feel like travelers again, sipping red wine and exchanging books and stories with other mochileros (backpackers) from around the world. The main attraction of Río Dulce is the hot spring waterfall at ... read more

WOW!! So Aric arrived in Honduras last Saturday, and then we went to the airport to pick up his "friend" on Sunday...who actually ended up to be my MOTHER!!! She decided last minute to come too and SURPRISED me like none other!! Incredible! We rented a car and got back to Copan Sunday night, then spent the next three days... - visiting the ruins - exploring Copan Ruinas and meeting my friends - going to a co-op coffee finca - trying some "exotic" fruits - visiting Mayatan school - going to the Bird Park - Horse back riding to La Pintada - A 5 hour round-trip tour into Guatemala - Celebrating David's 14th birthday (my host brother) Now we're on the coast in Tela enjoying so RR. Yesterday it rained, but today we have gorgeous weather. ... read more

Hello again! One last post before we head out to dinner and some discos tonight. Well, our stay in the Tela area has been interesting to say the least. We spent Wed. night at the Mango Inn which was a nice hostel in istelf, but set off a really noisy street which thankfully quieted during a crazy thunderstorm, but started up again at about 3 when the rain stopped. Ah well. We got up early and went next door for breakfast which wasn´t bad. When we finished, a woman came in with a bag, trying to sell what was inside. We noticed it was moving and asked her if we could see. It was a huge turtle!! She was trying to get the restuarant to buy if for soup!! She wanted 200 Lempira ($10) which was ... read more

Hi everybody. Well, if you haven´t realized it yet, we´re doing fine. The hurricane hit the Nicaragua-Honduras border which is inhabited by small tribes people so it was probably the best place to hit in terms of population size. The islands were clear out of the way by the time we made it to the brewery (go figure) but it was great there anyway. The first day we went to the falls which was so spectacular that we went back later on the second day. Earlier in the morning on the second day we toured the Lago de Yojoa via rowboat which was very tranquil (aside from one of our boatmates geting sick over the side and Mike´s 30ft plunge into the water off one of the climbing points). All in all we had a great ... read more

(I thought I already had posted about my trip to Tela...but it's gone....the magic of computers I guess. So here's try number two!) Tela is a small "city" on the North Coast of Honduras, about 5 hours from Copan Ruinas. I went with Nicole, a student I met at Escuela Ixbalanque (a Spanish School in Copan). We were both eager to get out of tiny Copan for a weekend of FUN IN THE SUN. We spent our first day on the beach and got COOKED! I was baked red by the afternoon. But it was worth it to be back by the ocean. We walked to the very edge of the "touristy" part of the city, to where the real people lived, and while we were lying in the sun a couple kids that lived nearby ... read more

This is Grant making a quick update. We left Leon and as planned made it through Honduras to El Salvador for the night. We stayed in a nice place on Playa El Zonte, where Erika spent a week last summer. The waves were huge, but Matt went boogie boarding anyway. We then moved on to Antigua, where we got set up for Lana´s arrival by plane in Guatemala City. I got to almost meet the judge, as the van got clamped as I was parked a meter into the red zone while spending a minute checking a hotel vacancy. I got as far as his secretary, but he wasn´t going to be in until the afternoon, so I just paid the $40 ticket, so I could get my transportation back. We picked Lana up at ... read more

DAY ONE: So Fred finally arrived. I bused to San Pedro to meet his flight. We stayed one nite there where we went to the casinos and tried our hand at "Carribean stud" which consisted of the house winning a lot and us, even after figuring this out, losing a lot. DAY TWO: We bused back to Comayagua the next day. We arrived and everyone was at the compound before the Chirstmas pagent so Fred was able to meet everyone there. I was so happy for someone from my life in the States to see and meet my life in Honduras. After an absurd Chirstmas pagent Honduran style we went to Morgans. Most everyone still had one more day till work was finished so not many people were out with us, plus Morgan was sick. We ... read more
