Mon 26 November - Day 31 to 31 - Tela It was with great excitement to be heading towards the Honduras island of Roatan but before we did, we continued to the northern coast town of Tela on the Caribbean coast. Tela is a gateway to the vast Lancetilla Botanical Garden, in the south, home to rich birdlife and an arboretum with a bamboo tunnel. In the west, Jeanette Kawas National Park has habitats ranging from coastal lagoons like Los Micos to beaches and jungle, plus the traditional village of Miami. We booked into a Cesar Mariscos Hotel which was right on the beach. Our 1st floor room had a big balcony looking out on the water. It was a beautiful temperature with a gentle breeze blowing. Alfredo took us to the main square, again pointing ... read more

Arriving in the dark after a much longer than expected drive from Cusuco National Park back to San Pedro Sula and then on to Tela, we have no sense of what the place will look like in daylight. But we are getting a little feel of the Caribbean flavour. There are elaborate Christmas lights near what seems to be the beachfront and we pass an enormous fenced compound which we learn is the Telamar resort - a massive all inclusive resort where the planeloads from North America, Canada and beyond descend upon. Any locals we spot are distinctly darker than their city cousins, being descendents of the Caribes, who escaped the slave ships in the late 1700's. Juan Carlos is a little unsure of where our hotel, the Maya Vista is located, so after a couple ... read more

Marco, Hazel, and I left Trujillo in a clound of dust which is to say that we were following a bus on the rough gravel road that was constructed to bypass the bridge that was washed out. This way was better than the ferry from hell but not by much. We drove into the cloud for twenty kilometers before we knew for sure that we were following a bus. It could have been, a truck, a bus, the tasmanian devil, or a portal into the twilight zone for all we knew because we couldnt see more than 20 feet into the storm. We eventually broke into the clear and reached pavement at a crossroads where we parted company. They would proceed from here to Tacoa where they would begin the first leg of their journey into ... read more

We woke up to a beautiful, clear, sunny, blue sky day!! Yippee!! We rounded up Peter & headed to Garifuna Tours to go see Punta Sal. We ran into Mike & Liz ordering food & they were heading to the shop too. I had my new favorite breakfast this morning. Baleadas (not sure of spelling). They took flour tortilla dough, hand patted the tortilla, cooked it in front of me & filled it with beans, scrambled eggs, shredded cheese, seasoned chicken & a huge slice of avocado. All for the price of $1. I plan to live off these for the rest of my time in Honduras. So good. At the tour office, we were told the tour was sold out. First the girl who worked there they would get another boat if one more person ... read more

Oh the Honchos (roosters for those of you who haven't been following along). They never stop their doodling. Sadly, it's a little bit overcast & drizzly this morning. We are really looking forward to the sun. It's been awhile it seems. Breakfast on the restaurant deck overlooking the bay was really nice though. Working on our plans for the Bay Islands. Where to stay, where to dive, how to get there, etc, etc. It's so fun to plan the next steps. We don't usually have to plan this much but with the diving & the fact that the Islands are the most touristy place we will have been in Honduras, we have to actually make reservations! What an unusual concept. After breakfast we headed into town & walked along the beach. The beach goes on forever ... read more

The rain was incessant last night. Non stop. I imagined a flood outside. Perfect day for a bus ride out of town! We had a breakfast burrito & met Peter (from Vancouver, BC) & Alex (SF, Ca.) & we all swapped insight into our travels. Peter just came from Nicaragua so it's always great to get insight into where to stay, what fun stuff they did & then we can share our insight as well. Love the traveler community. We told Peter to meet us at our hotel in Tela the following day & we packed up & got ready to head out. Settled up our bill ($120 for 2 nights & 3 days worth of good food, good beer & good fun) & headed out. Thankfully the rain stopped for the time being & we ... read more

On Saturday, John and Johnette visited Carmen’s home - see our last blog - and met Carmen’s parents Valentine and Maria and several of their other children. They have 13. One of Carmen’s fellow students, Edwardo, met them and served as an interpreter for the day. John and Johnette had a pleasant visit and got an interesting glimpse into home life here in El Salvador. They took lots of pictures which they shared with us As I mentioned in our previous blog, Hotel El Pacifico has an on site water park. It was very busy all weekend with families renting rooms for half and full days to entertain their extended families and children. We enjoyed lots of great people watching there and on the beach where hundreds of locals gathered to enjoy the sun, surf and ... read more

The boat trip to Puerto Cortesin Honduras was horrendous, big waves, quite choppy and I have to concentrate hard and distract myself so I dont throw up. A number of the passenegers mostly the gringos also felt sick. @ hours and a half later we are in Honduras, thank goodness, there was a long wait at Mango Creek in Belize for customs, we waited for more than hour and they dont excatly work fast there, took forever. We have to take taxis to get to the proper immigration office in town so we hired this taxi between four of us, Topi the Finn, the English couple from Devon, Fleur and Tim. After being stamped in we went straight to Omoa, raining hard now and quite cold. Arriving at Rolli's place, the Canadian owner told us the ... read more

We took the early morning Tica Bus from Copan to San Pedro Sula, here we transferred to another Tica bus to Tela. We checked into the hotel, I was rooming with Paul (oz) one of the new people to join our group. I went down to the Carribean Sea for swim, the beach was a little dirty so walked down to a nicer spot & went for a dip. On the way back I met some of the guys having lunch in a beach side restaurant, I tried the conch soup which was delicious. I hung out on the beach & went for dinner later that night with some of the ladies. I went to bed early because I was tired. I think we should have gone all the way to la Ceiba, we could have ... read more

We set off early from Copan and we very excited to be heading to the coast for some bright sunshine. It was a fairly long moring but finally got to Tela (which neither of us thought much of) to then get a bus to one of the Garifuna villages, La Ensenada. We checked into a nice little hotel that had remarkably smelly water to the point whgere we both refused to wash. It was a really nice little place and we found a beachside bar come restaurant come home where a couple cooked us one of the biggest meals ever consisting of rice, chicken and banana chips. The following day we decided we would try and get a tour to an island where snorkeling was meant to be good. We also decided that rather than waiting ... read more
