Fred and Kari
At Morgans bar, first nite DAY ONE: So Fred finally arrived. I bused to San Pedro to meet his flight. We stayed one nite there where we went to the casinos and tried our hand at "Carribean stud" which consisted of the house winning a lot and us, even after figuring this out, losing a lot.
DAY TWO: We bused back to Comayagua the next day. We arrived and everyone was at the compound before the Chirstmas pagent so Fred was able to meet everyone there. I was so happy for someone from my life in the States to see and meet my life in Honduras. After an absurd Chirstmas pagent Honduran style we went to Morgans. Most everyone still had one more day till work was finished so not many people were out with us, plus Morgan was sick. We still stayed and had a great time catching up.
DAY THREE: The next day we slept in a bit, went to the park and got some food at the stands which were still there for Chirstmas. We bought mangos from 2 sixth grade aged girls who couldn't stop staring at Freds blue, blue eyes, "que azulito sus ojos" they said, how blue his eyes are.
Another boy came up and touched him and ran off. I knew it would be fun traveling around with a blonde haired, blue eyed guy! We went to the market because Fred really wanted a pineapple which we got along with the fixings for dinner that nite. We went to the fair (finally, I had wanted to go for forever and just never got around to it and this was the last weekend) It reminded me a lot of the Ramadas in Santiago during independence day, smaller, but still pretty nice. Then we went to Morgans bar and everyone was there, happy vacation had started. We helped Morgan set up his dart board and Fred and I played the first game. It was so great to play darts in Honduras and especially with Fred. Because, though, "there are no darts in Chile, "(thanks hippie Todd) there are now darts in Hondo.
Donray and Fred, probably the only 2 Lamda Chi's in Central America got to talking and the next thing I knew tables were being set up to play beer pong! Though we had no ping pong balls you make do with what you can and after fashioning 2 balls

2 lambda Chi's planning the beer pong tournament out of foil the game was on!Fred and I against Donray and Jill. We didn't do so well, but had a blast and aquired quite a crowd. I am quite certain that was the first time beer pong has been played in Honduras! Afterwards we got the rest of the crowd, which had grown since we first got there, involved and played a little flip cup. Felt like college all over again. All in all a REALLY great day and nite.
DAY FOUR: Next day, early we caught our bus to La Ceiba.... we had a super first class, semi cama (almost bed) bus for the first half of the ride and slept the whole way. Once in La Ceiba we found a cheap hotel, got some lunch and napped some more. Went to Ex Patriates bar and to my huge surprize, discovered another dart board!! Yes, oh yes, there are darts in Hondo after all!!! We drank and played and finally went back to the hotel.
DAY FIVE: Next day we took our armoured truck to the Jungle River Lodge! It was just what we were expecting, better even. We were right on the river! We got our room,

Let the beer pong begin settled in, had some breakfast, napped and then took off with Roberto, our enthusiastic (if not drunk) guide to hike Pico Bonito National park. We hiked up to a little waterfall where he and Fred both jumped into it, I got in and swam, no jumping for me. It was beautiful. Then we hiked even further up to the base of the big waterfall... again, gorgeous.. very nice hike and very knowledgable guide, who all along kept pointing out all sorts of natural remedies for whatever might ail you.
That nite it was just Fred and I staying in the lodge... we drank at the bar with the owner, Tio and his nephew Fransico... they were quite accomodating and full of jokes which apparently didn't quite translate. They had us try the "jungle juice" which I sipped and Fred shot, both his and mine... he was feeling quite good afterwards too.
DAY SIX: Next day we slept in a bit and went rafting. Ron from Cali joined us... it was quite different than any rafting we'd done in Colorado.. we had to hike and climb and wade and swim and jump! They had to test our swimming abilities first.. which
consisted of us jumping into the river, swiming to the side and then swiming through not one but two currents... Fred and Ron both made it just fine... I had to be pulled in with the rope. Those currents are dang strong. They also had to test how well we floated, I did this just fine, except for a few eddys that pulled me under. The guys had another chance to jump, this one was the scariest to me, as they had to run and jump out and it was super high. Finally we were ready to raft. It was great, a lot of fun and none of us fell out. Juan Carlos, our guide said we went through some class 4's and 3's but none of us were sure about that, perhaps when the water is higher. It was still great especailly the last little run called the Lavadora, or the washing machine. They we got out and floated for a ways too. When we returned to the lodge Fred and I took the tubes out for a bit too, and just played in the little lagoon.
That nite it was Fred and Ron and I and the kyaker

Starting off the waterfall flip cup who had gone rafting with us, Darwin, he was a really chill, cool guy and was quite happy to take a seat on our side of the bar when Ron offered to take over bartending... so were we... we went through all the jungle juice and had to make more!
DAY SEVEN: The next day we sadly had to leave and head for Tela. We hitched a ride with a really nice couple from Honduras who live in Arizona half the year. They have a lychee finca (plantation, refer to previous blog about lychees) And he said that they will begin exporting them to the US next year! Should be in a Safeway near you!! They dropped us at the bus terminal where we took a 2 hour bus to Tela. Walked into town, got a hotel and went straight to get some seafood!! Fred had been craving conch and I got some shrimp. We dined nearly on the beach. Walked around a bit, secured our trip for the next day and then went bar hopping up and down the strip along the beach. Ran into Bob (the owner of the D and D, refer to 2nd blog entry) which

Cheering on our team confirmed how small this world is yet again. Had some mariachi's play for us and then charge us! Ate some more good seafood and then to bed.
DAY EIGHT: Next day, we were up early and took a boat to Jeanette Kawas National Park, or Punta Sol. Jeanette was killed fighting to keep this land from becoming resort property... and at least she succeeded. It was beautiful. We took a hike around and saw and heard howler monkeys! My favorite part of the trip, mostly because I didn't expect it! Then we went snorkling, saw some pretty nice fish and coral. We both got really burned... Fred more than I. Then we had a typical Garafino lunch, which was plantains, rice and beans and super tasty fish. we snorkled around some more to avoid getting eaten by all the sand fleas. We got bakc and got on a bus to San Pedro, our last stop. We splurged on a nice hotel for the last day and didn't leave it because it is so unsafe there. Everything we needed was in the hotel anyway, a bar, resteruant and pool.
Fred left on Thursday. It was a great trip all around and

Having a drunken moment at Morgans it was soooooo good to see him and travel around with him. He is the first person to visit in any of the other counties I've live. THANK YOU!!! I caught a bus to Tegucigualpa, got a hotel and met my parents the next day. That will be the next blog! Think this was a long one, but it was a week! Merry Christmas!!! Love, Kari
