After traveling on the Great White mother for the millineum voyage on Semester at Sea I set a goal to travel to all 7 continents... after moving to Chile and traveling south I made it to Antarctica... number 7. Weddings brought me to the states for a year where I received my masters in education. I found a job in Honduras and got out of the states once again. Seems this travel bug is more than just a bug, but rather a lifestyle now. Can't wait to see what Central America has in store for me! I stole my traveling motto from a fellow I met along the way, "you never regret a swim," whether it's in the glacial lakes of Chile and Argentina, the Antartica ocean, or the warm waters of Honduras, every one has been memerable... can't wait to jump in some more.
Just made a trip to Puerto Rico... blogs to follow hopefully

Moments in Nature Joel and I hiking in Santiago. At the top, we sit, just the two of us, on rocks. Stare out at the sky. A bird in the distance. Circling closer. We turn to one another. “That’s a condor.” It is. A magical silence as we stand and watch in awe. One week in Ushuaia before my ship leaves for Antarctica. A week pass purchased for the trails in Tierra Del Fuego. A path along the water that crosses the border between Chile and Argentina. Pesos of each country left at the marker. Before I get there, on my shaded trail, an ... read more

Moments From the Sky Intipunku, the sun gate. The fourth and final day. Up at 4:30 to hike in the dark to this particular spot. Where gods once watched Machu Picchu awaken. Our group of travelers, once strangers, turned friends from days on the trail, stops suddenly. We have arrived. Backpacks slip from shoulders, spots are staked, a quiet falls on the otherwise boisterous crowd. I lean against my pack, ready. The first flicker of light, then the next. The city I’ve waited a lifetime to see appears before me as the sun climbs into the sky. This is why you hike four days. Vale la pena. ... read more

Hello all. Greetings from Caye Caulker and happy new year. I will say it is always nice to spend the new year abroad. Feels like I'm already started with my new year's resolution of more travel! The day of the 31st was spent at The Split, a bar which has the only "beach" on the island. Beach is in quotations because it is simply a platform deck that has sand on it with a jump off point into the water. I met two traveling friends and we hung out all day here. I participated in my first flash mob to Gangnam. It was quite fun with everyone on the beach getting involved. Later that night we rang in the new year in the same place with just about everyone else on the island. There were fireworks ... read more

11/19/11 “Where’s Jan? Jan’s gone.” I was nearly screaming in the crowded café. I looked from the chair in which she had just been sitting to all the faces now staring at me, wondering what it was I was screaming about. How do you say ‘missing’ in Spanish? How do you say ‘thief’? “Calm down. Where’d you see her last?” John asked calm, and annoyingly collected as he walked to the table. He wasn’t missing Jan. He’d only recently been introduced to her. “What do you mean where’d I see her last? She was sitting right there… I got up to get some sugar and came back and she was gone. Someone took her. Ladrons! Ladrons!” the word for thief suddenly came to me. People were looking at me because now they knew what I was ... read more

I've been spending a long weekend in Ward Colorado. My boyfriend is doing some work on a friend's house and I am using the time to write. Inspiration abounds in the mountains. The first day I found myself going through all my old writing, dating back to 1998, when I was a creative writing student at Colorado State University. Those have been interesting, if not funny to look at now. I stumbled upon what is to follow in a notebook. The first four moments were written on January 25, 2004, while I was still living in Santiago. The rest were written yesterday. Moments in Santiago 1. Dan and I walk down Lota and see a motorized bicycle riding down El Bosque. We both look at each other and laugh. Dan comments on the speed in which ... read more

There's a reason that people who live abroad, live abroad. Instead of living in whatever country it is, you are really living in a place more aptly named Never-Neverland. There is a sense while abroad in which you do not age, you do not suffer consequences and until you return to the aptly named “real world,” you can be whoever you want to be, because no one is around to know the difference. I never really took advantage of the latter in either of my living abroad experiences. I always found it harder to be someone other than me. As Mark Twain once said, “If you tell the truth you don't have to remember anything,” I guess I have a bad memory. I did however reap the other benefits of Never-Neverland. Though I'm not sure reap ... read more

NOV. 4, 2009-May 13, 2011 What if she could? What if she had to? She would run away. That’s what she’d do and she knew it, from the first day. If they broke up she would run away. She’d run back to the life she was leading before he came along. Back to the life which was hers, a life before love was found. It was as if that life was on hold. Like the pause button had been hit and was waiting to resume, right where she left off. She was too scared, or perhaps to aware, to give it up fully. To let it go completely. So she held on to fragments of a life she once thought would be forever. A seashell from the beach in Puerto Viejo, a faded photo of a ... read more

3/16/11 The Baby Blanket While living in Honduras I traveled to Guatemala over Christmas break. I visited a very small town, known amongst travelers for its huge craft market. Chichicastenego consisted of a church, a plaza and a market to rival any I’ve seen. I had been waiting to visit it. I had saved my money and not been foolish buying other trivial trinkets along the way because I knew this was the place to do my shopping. I had a list in my head of what I would buy for myself and the friends and family I had back in the states. I wandered up and down the long, narrow aisles, admiring the handmade purses, skirts, scarves, sandals, finger puppets and other various nick knacks. I took my time walking through the entire market once ... read more

There is a postcard I have framed which I keep in my bathroom. It is a daily reminder of a specific goal and a dream completed. When I start to feel defeated I can simply look at that postcard and remember all that I am capable of. The postcard is one I sent to myself. It is not so much the message I wrote, as the place from which I sent it that is important. I purchased the postcard in Buenos Aries. It has a beautiful picture of what I later learned are called jacarandas. They are these gorgeous, purple flowered trees that just fill up the space with purple. I bought the postcard because it reminded me of my time living in Chile (another dream realized). I lived near Parque Las Lillas in Provedencia, Santiago. ... read more
