Tortuga Libre
Freeing the turtle Hello again! One last post before we head out to dinner and some discos tonight. Well, our stay in the Tela area has been interesting to say the least. We spent Wed. night at the Mango Inn which was a nice hostel in istelf, but set off a really noisy street which thankfully quieted during a crazy thunderstorm, but started up again at about 3 when the rain stopped. Ah well. We got up early and went next door for breakfast which wasn´t bad. When we finished, a woman came in with a bag, trying to sell what was inside. We noticed it was moving and asked her if we could see. It was a huge turtle!! She was trying to get the restuarant to buy if for soup!! She wanted 200 Lempira ($10) which was a bit pricey, but when we saw him sticking his little head out we knew we had to buy him to set him free. Noel talked her down for 150 and we took him. We weren´t sure where to let him go because she said she found him at the beach, and anywhere along the beach or river would be littered with people who would
Tornabe
Finally back in a hammock by the sea happily pick him up again for dinner. So we went to the tourist police who told us to go out to Tornabe which is a small village in a National park. Good news because we were planning to stay there anyway. We got our stuff packed and headed there with the turtle (now named Tortuga Libre - free turtle). We got a cab and went into town, found an entry to th lagoon and set him free. Hopefully he made it away from the town without becomming soup! We wandered around for a while asking the locals for Don Santos, who supposedly had cabins for rent. We finally got to the right place, where we saw guys building cool cabanas on the beach....but those would be done in a few days. So we got a lady to show us the ´cabins´. Haha. More like a prison cell with a double bed and a fan (thankfully we brought an extra sheet to sleep on cuz EEW). But we were already there and it was on the beach with 2 hammocks where we could sleep so we stayed. It got better when we found the bathroom which consisted of a pot-like toilet
with a gravity fed flush via water bucket. Yum. We spent the day in hammocks and in the water which was great, I think we were the only gringos there. But at night Mike wasn´t feeling well and wanted normal food, so we got burgers at a little hut across the street. Big mistake! As we laid down that night, my stomach suddenly felt like a brick and I knew we´d be in for a long night. By now the storms rolled in and I was sitting outside with a trash can. What fun! At about midnight the fiasco was over and we finally got some sleep. First thing in the morning we headed back into town to find our splurge hotel for the last night. We´re now at Hotel Cesar Mariscos, right on the beach in Tela with a great room and a pool! Spent the day lounging around and getting fruits for Noel and now we´re heading out. By the way Mom, I feel fine now so stop worrying!! I´ve just learned my lesson about eating beef in a village where we saw no cows. Tomorrow afternoon it´s back to San Pedro for our 1 am flight home.
Tornabe
Our humble abode. The Moon Guide's interpretations of the "cabins on the beach" proved to be a bit deceiving. Talk to you soon!!
Love, Noel & Mike
