Luckily we got to Grenada in time for Carnival, Spice Mas 2009- yohoo! Every island has Carnival at different times throughout the year and we were super excited to go to this one. Grenada’s Carnival is unique and we have heard tons of fabulous tales about past years from other cruisers. It is one of the few islands in the Caribbean that still use paint on J’Ouvert morning, the only island with a light parade, and it is the most friendly and fun Carnival because it encourages everyone to participate and be part of the debauchery. Just about everyone on the island, from young and old, partake in the festivities. And who could resist?!?! Not the Rum Runners, that’s for sure. But what makes this Carnival extra special for us is that our 17 year old ... read more

We arrived yesterday morning on time and without incident. At home our cat, Tigger, went into hiding when he realized we were going away. From previous experience we knew he would be hiding under our bed. We managed to peel him off the carpet. Imagen the combined strenght of cat claws and velcro! Althought Shauna is a seasoned taveller, she had a novel experience at YYZ. A random body search, including the security officer running her rubber gloved hands thru Shauna's hair. The sleeping comfort of the airport in Trinidad was 7 on a scale of 10. The seats were pretty comfortable but we were too excited to get much rest. A woman also woke Harald up after he slept for 2 hours saying he's slept enough and now it was her turn, as all the ... read more

Day 9 Tobago Cays, St Vincent March 13 (Continued) Wayne made it back to the boat and changed out of his camouflaged shorts before he was arrested as an insurgent gorilla. Karen will not need to mortgage the farm to bail her husband out of jail. We successfully checked back into Grenada so we are legally in that country once again. We had dinner of barracuda and curry chicken at a beach restaurant. We then walked up the beach to listen to the best steel drum band in the Caribbean. Five ladies and two fellows made the most amazing music. Several of the local boys joined in with their bongo drums. Brad, you would have loved this place! They kept up the beat until late in the night. We could hear the band from the boat. ... read more

Grenada Day 1 March 5, 2009 Wayne and Rick arrived at 5:30 AM at Point Saline International Airport on the island country of Grenada. Stepping off the plane into 76 degree temp was a little shock after Wisconsin winter. Air was heavy and it was hard to breath. Got thru customs and immigration without a problem. Took a taxi to True Blue Resort and Marina where Horizon Yacht Charters is located. The sun had just come up and at 6:30 AM. We didn’t know if our sailing buddies would appreciate early morning visitors. I walked down the docks and found a Verensia catamaran. I went back and got Rick and our luggage and went back to the cat. We started loading our gear on board when Skipper Kent stuck his head out of the hatch and ... read more

OIL DOWN The national dish of Grenada It was a great afternoon with about 20 cruisers and 20 locals. The recipe kind of says it all! Take a swig of rum, preferably Rivers. Grate fresh coconut and saffron. (about an hour with 8 people) Peel breadfruit, ripe green bananas & pumpkin. (get locals to help with this). Go to nearest callaloo bush & pick 1/2 dozen leaves. Take another swig Rivers rum. 8-9 garlic cloves, 1 very, very small onion. Green papaya, 2 carrots. string beans, ketchup, 1 Tbsp. "Complete Seasoning" Slaughter pig, cut off snout & tail, discard rest. (Definitely need a hefty gulp of rum at this point) Marinate in "Green Sauce" along with some old chicken. Get yourself a massive black cauldron & start up fire, making sure that lady from up the ... read more

Peacefully bobbing at anchor at Hog Island, Grenada, we have just finished dinner of bbq’d pork chops and are now enjoying the serenity. Tree frogs are a constant hum. The temperature is still in the low 80’s; (I have given up trying to translate to Celsius) but the heat is over for the day. It sure is nice to have Ace here; she arrived two days ago after having given me ten days to launch the boat and put it in some semblance of order. Today was the first day in two weeks where the rhythm of the Caribbean seems to have returned... slow and easy. The past two weeks have been a bit of a blur. My brother Bill and I met in Toronto, flew down together and were to provide each other with some ... read more

It's time to get out of the cold Midwest and go sailing in the Caribbean. Sailing friend, Skipper Kent has arranged a sailing cruise for March 5-15, 2009. The crew will be made up of 2 of Kent's friends, myself and my good BBYC sailing buddy Rick. The boat is a Venesia 42 catamaran chartered from Horizon Yacht Charters out of Grenada. Boat Link Grenada is located in the Southern Caribbean about 100 miles from Venezuela. We plan to sail North to St. Vincent and stop at islands along the way. Should be a great trip. Will try to add a few blogs along the way if I can find an internet connection.... read more

The first person we came into contact with after arriving in Grenada was a lovely Gentleman called Jools, he rowed up to Bob in a small wooden boat and commented on our courtesy flag, which was about 4 times the size that it should be. He makes courtesy flags for a living and after some discussion he agreed to make us a Dominica flag, as the company I bought the gigantic flags from gave me a Dominican Republic flag rather than a Dominica one. So now we at least have one flag that is the right size. We explored the area and found a market place selling all sorts of tropical fruit and local spices, each stall was playing reggae and soca music at full blast on their stereos which gave a rather lively atmosphere. I ... read more
