We decided Samara was not for us when we woke up with a room full of mosquitos and the next best hotel in town was over $50/night. We had had enough beaches for awhile anyway and were anxious to get on to the rainforest. So, we hopped onto a few more buses (including one section that took 2.5hrs to cover 30kms) and made our way to the mountain town of Santa Elena. We found a great hotel here for only $10 which looked brand new, very clean, secure, and no mosquitos. It is also a very touristy town but is only a few minutes drive to two of the country's most accessible cloud forest reserves. The cloud forest gets its name because it is so high in the hills that it is almost always shrouded ... read more

Okay, this will probably seem like a condensed entry, which it is. There was so much stuff going on the first week it was incredible. Here’s a brief summary and the rest will have to be told in picture captions. (I’ve reduced the picture quality to speed uploading. If any images look like crap - or there’s one you’d like to see in full res - send us an email and we can add it to our “Gallery”.) Sunday we left the hotel and moved in with our homestay. They are an awesome host family that take in several students on a regular basis. Their names are Juan and Katia (the parents) and two sons Jonathan (15) and Ignasio (9). So far it’s been six-star hotel service. Katia works really hard to keep us fed, wearing ... read more

So, this weekend I went to Montevrede. I think it's supposed to be a rainforest but I think cloud forest is more appropriate. The trip there was the most beautiful yet, so beautiful that the bus actually pulled over at one point so we could all talk pictures and just soak it all in. I was in awe...I saw a sunset I have only dreamed of. I just sat on the bus listening to my music and staring out the window. It is hard to convey how amazing it felt...it was almost like a moment of clarity. It's unreal to be so close to perfection. That night we stayed at a hotel on a mountain and it was FREEZING! There was a bonfire, which was great, though, and we had a perfect view of the stars. ... read more

The first weekend we stayed at El Mirador de Pacifico. We got lucky (I think) and the owner upgraded our room to the “Jungle Villa” because he had a big group that booked all the basic rooms after we made our reservation. If you look around on their website (perhaps in the ‘for sale’ section) I think you can find a floor plan for this room. It’s pretty cool, but not literally. The one little window unit you can see in one of the pictures barely managed to make any noticeable effect on the heat and humidity in the room. So we didn’t get to slowly acclimate ourselves. The first night our travel clock said 88F by the time we went to sleep and it might have gotten down to the upper 70’s by morning. (Nikki ... read more

Issac.... Issac* was featured in an early journal entry; I'd met him in front of Arco Iris, a disco in Quepos, and he gave me a ride home. He was a bit drunk, but seemed nice. He owns two restaurants in Costa Rica (a high end restaurant in Guanacaste, and a beachfront sushi bar in Manuel Antonio), as well as two in Miami, including the well known, Sabu, patronized by celebrities. Issac is Ethiopian, speaks 7 different languages, and is a shrewd business man. He is in his late 30's or early 40́s, about 6' tall, with a stocky, muscular build, smooth , unlined skin, and a jet black ponytail at the nape of his neck. He drives a jeep with a carseat in the back, so I assume he has a small child. However, I ... read more

This was our travel day. We didn’t finish packing our bags till nearly 1 AM, so getting up at 3 AM to leave the house by 4 basically made it feel like we’d pulled an all nighter. And the shuttle that was supposed to pick us up by 4 was about 20 minutes late, and had a headlight out. We were starting to think these were omens! But really after that there wasn’t anything interesting till we got to San Jose. The last leg of our journey was from San Jose to Quepos / Manuel Antonio by plane. This was the leg that had us worried when packing our bags because their website said the max weight for luggage was 25 lbs + 2 carry on. My bag weighed 35 lbs and Nikki’s weighed 41 lbs. ... read more

Hello everyone, and welcome to our TravelBlog! We hope to keep this up to date as much as possible with stories, photos and maybe even a video clip or two as our trip progresses. Check back occassionally and send us some slackermail if we haven't posted anything in a while. In the last couple weeks Nikki and I have had to answer some common questions many times, so here is a brief FAQ section: Q1: So what are you guys doing down there? Some kind of mission trip? A1: Not exactly. Here is the itinerary lowdown and some links to websites that we used to plan the trip. * Feb 2 - We fly out of Kansas City with a stop-over in Atlanta on our way to San Jose, Costa Rica. In San Jose we change ... read more

... read more

Hello Everyone First of all excuse our typing, these espanic keyboards can be challenging. We have arrived in Costa Rica safe and sound, it was a very long trip but so far all is great. We left USA around 6pm and arrived in San Jose at 10pm...Alberto and Kentucky - as I call him, picked us up at the airopuerto. The ride to the hostel was short and sweet and the room was clean and very spacious - could sleep six of our closest friends if we wanted. Our car rocks, 1990 Mitsubishi Montero - a tank. Kentucky apparently likes SK for goose hunting and he really misses it - so he says. He has lived here for 20 years and has become a local car renter dude. I imagine in his past life, he had ... read more
