We left the Rainsong Wildlife Sanctuary in the making to continue on a quest to see more of Costa Rica’s celebrated wildlife and less of its ex-pats. Santa Elena was our destination - a small town at the end of a beautiful bus ride up into the highlands. We arrived just as the sun was setting behind the hills and we headed straight to our hostel of choice - Pension Santa Elena - where we hoped to meet up again with Joe, who had left Rainsong only a few days before us. As fate would have it Joe was sat just inside the door as we walked into the packed hostel. Even though initially the receptionist said all the beds were full, she kindly worked something out for us so we could stay and we headed ... read more

After slight dissapointment at the Volcano experience (although i keep forgetting the aceness of the thermal spa) in La Fortuna, Monteverde had a lot of work to do. After arrival last night we had lengthy discussions as to what was the best course of action (we incidentally is still myself and Emma, the girl from the Valparriso blogs in Chile) for the next day. Monteverde as an area pretty much offers the lot in terms of activities that a Marc might be interested in. There's a cheese factory that offers tours (i'll forever regret the fact i couldn't fit this in, however i would like to point out i did go to a cheese factory in New Zealand, to anyone doubting my lack of cheese love - its still huge), coffee plantations with tours, zip lines ... read more

After an evening of fun and dancing Costa Rican style up in San Jose, we had an early wake up call (very early by my Argentinian sensored brain) to get a bus up to the cloud forest area of La Fortuna. As usual slight hicups were plentilful when trying to figure out transportation in Latin America, but by 8.40am (sat 11th) we were on the Tica Bus, taking the 4 hour journey north from San Jose. The journey itself was pretty spectacular, and as Costa Rica is in transit from the rainy season to the slightly less rainy season at the moment we were givem spectacular views of clouds, sun, rain. mist, more cloud, all against the backdrop of stunning cloud forest. palm trees and quaint little Costa Rican villages. The first thing i've noticed about ... read more

"Pura vida." It's about the good things in life that come from what's natural, and Ticos (Costa Ricans) love saying it. And I've loved living it for the past few days. (Mav, because I know you're reading this, I just wanted you to know that they also say "man" exactly like in Scarface. It's awesome. And I say it every chance I get.) As my last foreign stopover before making it back home, I landed at the international airport in San José, Costa Rica, on Friday afternoon and was prompted greeted by rain, which begins like clockwork every afternoon--2:00 in San José, 4:00 in Quepos. (Speaking of rain, it just began to downpour outside of my little internet café.) Leaving the big city, I grabbed a bus directly south to Quepos and the Parque Nacional Manuel ... read more

We arrived home yesterday evening from a very relaxing 3 day, 2 night stay with friends in Herradura. Our friends Terry and Elena are our oldest friends in our new lives, not in age, in the length of time we've known them. Terry was the only other person on our George Lundquist tour last summer. We all met Elena our second night of the tour, it was a love connection for them. The two are now married and living happily ever after at the beach. The seven of us, including dogs all moved back to Costa Rica within days of each other. At one point we thought we’d all be on the same flight out of LAX. We got an unexpected surprise when we went to pick up our cargo ten days later and ran into ... read more

So here's the dealio right now. Ali and Jo have left Santa Teresa and will go to Ecuador this friday, starting work at the wildlife sanctuary there on monday. Now, GUESS WHAT? I've decided to stay in costa rica for another month!!!! I've found a house I can live in for FREE and share with my mexican friend, Sheila, and an american guy. Right on the beach, hot water, tv, beautiful wooden and tiled. WOW WOW WOW I said. PLUS, I'll be saving SO much money cutting a month off the volunteer work I'm doing in Ecuador which is gonna cost us about $400 PER MONTH! (for some reason they want to charge us US$85 per WEEK, NOT including food!) I can still go to Ecuador, join the other girls, and work at the wildlife rehab ... read more

Well my last night in Arenal was quite the time. After some cheap, cheap beer, we decided to head off to a Costa Rican club. Quite the atmosphere, with all the latin american tunes fused with some North American hip hop. Anyways, got to know an Arizona girl, Lindy, on the last day, and maybe one of these days I can convince the boys on a roadtrip through the west states and stop by. Anyways, took off that afternoon on a great boat ride across Lake Arenal, the source of almost all of Costa Rica´s energy from wind and hydro-electricity. Then went on a hair-raising jeep ride up a mountainside, through thick clouds, into Santa Elena. It´s a quaint little touristy town, the base for exploring Monterverde and Santa Elena cloud forests reserves. I found a ... read more

Myself and pete have had a crazy couple of days. I don't know where to begin. We decided that we were ready to leave playa carmen and the tranquilo hostel. The waves had gone a bit rubbish, and as crazy as it sounds, i was getting boared of having to fill my time sat in a hammock reading or watching cable tv. I watched all 3 games of the champions league on tuesday and wednesday live on espn. I didn't travel half way round the world to watch more football than i would in the uk. I was strong on Wednesday when liverpool were on. I had decided enough was enough and me and pete would go i search of waves at another beach instead. Bearing in mind that it is the rainy season, and we ... read more

Wow, I've finally reached paradise. Got out of San Jose as fast as possible, onto a bus that took us for a 3 hour harrowingly fast journey winding through cloud forests and finally down on to the pacific coast. It was absolutely gorgeous. I got to Jaco at about 4 yesterday, and met up with a Montreal chick named Leslie, who I'm now travelling with. We found a nice joint owned by a Tico named Miguel, super nice fellow, who then came over last night to cook us a delicious welcome meal of beef, rice, peppers and onions, it was terrific...and free!! Later on, Miguel, Leslie and I picked up some beers, and went back to the hotel and Miguel and I jammed...he has two guitars, one of which is a beautiful Fender accoustic. Damn it ... read more
