Sandra and James

Travel Bums

Sandra and James are planning a low budget trip around the world! We left Canada on January 31, 2007 and headed to Costa Rica to visit James' Aunt and Uncle, as well as visit the rest of the country. We will also spend some time in Nicaragua before Sandra returns to China to finish studying Mandarin. James will continue travelling in Central America until June, 2007 and then go to China where we will continue travelling together again. With no definite destination or schedule we have decided to bum around the world for as long as we can stretch our funds.

The dry season in Northern Costa Rica looks a lot like autumn in Canada. The trees have lost their leaves except for in the high mountain areas and along the rivers. The good news is that there is very few mosquitos. We decided to check out one waterfall before we left the country. It was in a park one hour north of Liberia, called Rincon de la Vieja. We hiked for about 1 hour to the double falls swam in the refreshing waters in a little oasis that we had all to ourselves. We had no bathing suits so we just swam in our underwear...until a bus load of package tourists from Ontario showed up and we decided that we should get going. We took a couple of buses back to the west coast and ... read more

We decided Samara was not for us when we woke up with a room full of mosquitos and the next best hotel in town was over $50/night. We had had enough beaches for awhile anyway and were anxious to get on to the rainforest. So, we hopped onto a few more buses (including one section that took 2.5hrs to cover 30kms) and made our way to the mountain town of Santa Elena. We found a great hotel here for only $10 which looked brand new, very clean, secure, and no mosquitos. It is also a very touristy town but is only a few minutes drive to two of the country's most accessible cloud forest reserves. The cloud forest gets its name because it is so high in the hills that it is almost always shrouded ... read more

We left the comfort and convenience of the Maccormac home in Playa Hermosa to start exploring the rest of Costa Rica. Since we had been to CR once before in Dec. 2003, we wanted to check out some different sights this time. We decided to head south, down the coast, to a town called Samara. The trip was about 100km and required 3 different buses, it took 4 hours and cost about 5 dollars for both of us. Once there we checked into the first hotel we came across. It also happened to be the cheapest one in town at $10/pp/night. It was cheap for a reason. All the mosquito screens were broken out, the door was a few slabs of wood with enough space in between to see through, it didn't lock in any ... read more

Our trip to Central America began as we flew in to Liberia, Costa Rica on Jan 31st. The airport is actually more like an open-air barn and it is only big enough to handle one flight at a time. James' Aunt Diane picked us up from the airport and drove us to her and John's home at Playa Hermosa on the Pacific Coast, about 20 minute's drive from Liberia. The house was amazing, 3 BR, 2 baths, hot shower, and a patio with a hammock and a view looking down the hillside to the Pacific Ocean. Although not part of the Villas Sol resort, it is on the same property and all the facilities were available to us. We took advantage of the shuttle to and from the beach which was about a 15min walk ... read more
