Hello everyone, and welcome to our TravelBlog! We hope to keep this up to date as much as possible with stories, photos and maybe even a video clip or two as our trip progresses. Check back occassionally and send us some slackermail if we haven't posted anything in a while.
In the last couple weeks Nikki and I have had to answer some common questions many times, so here is a brief FAQ section:
Q1: So what are you guys doing down there? Some kind of mission trip?
A1: Not exactly. Here is the itinerary lowdown and some links to websites that we used to plan the trip.
- Feb 2 - We fly out of Kansas City with a stop-over in Atlanta on our way to San Jose, Costa Rica. In San Jose we change airlines from Delta to Sansa for another 1/2 hr flight to a small pair of towns called Quepos and Manuel Antonio. For a route map click here.
- Feb 5 - We move in with our host family for the next six weeks. They were assigned to us by the school we'll be attending. We don't know much about them yet, except that they are a couple with two sons age 15 and 18. (Sounds like trouble to me 😊)
- Feb 6 - We start school at El Paraiso School. School includes 20 hrs of intensive Spanish lessons per week, and for a little extra fun a few surf lessons too.
- Feb 6 - March 16 - Learning Spanish during the week, and probably a couple weekend trips as well, but we haven't planned those yet. Stay tuned!
- March 18 - I'm not really sure what we'll be doing on this day, because it should be the start of our "volunteer" section of the trip. El Paraiso is supposed to tell us all that once we get down there. But from what I've gathered we have to make a pitstop in San Jose to complete some paperwork. Thank God. Over a month without paperwork and I would be near a nervous breakdown.
- March 19? - April 14 - The volunteer organization we're working through is ASVO which in English stands for The Association of Volunteers for Serving in the Protected Areas, so it's nice they abbreviated it. We have requested to work at their project site Las Pumas Rescue Center. Really, no idea what that will involve except what it says on the website.
- April 15 - April 18 - For the last few days we'll be on our own to do whatever. We haven't planned that far ahead.
- April 19 - Homeward bound!
Q2: Why?
A2: For those of you currently living in the Midwest check the temperature outside where you live. Then check the temperature of Costa Rica. That is one reason. On a more serious note though, the idea for the trip came from a desire to make a difference, experience another culture, learn another language, go on an adventure......and to trade the morning commute for a surf session. Somehow we managed to get it all packed into one intense trip. Neither of us really know what to expect, but that is part of the fun.
We should have occassional access to our Yahoo email addresses if you'd like to send us an email. And I think you can sign up for email updates to be notified when we post something to this blog. I promise to include more pictures next time. Post cards might take awhile, but if you send us your mailing address we'll do our best to send some snailmail your way.
Hasta luego,
Chris y Nikki
