On to "Costa Rica"Ross OlsenIt would be great if we could transport ourselves between locations like "Scottie" or "Dr Who". No, we´re all herded into great metal cylinders, stacked, packed and tortured on long haul flights, transit lounges, in and out of airports......someone has to invent a better way. If it wasn´t for destinations like Costa Rica, we´d all stay home. Travelling to Mal Pais and Santa Teresa you might consider you were never going to arrive. You might even consider turning back as the roads narrow and quickly turn into into an ugly mess of pot holes and ravines resembling something akin to the surface of the moon. Mal Pais and St Teresa is a sleepy little area (at least in the off season) that essentially share the same stretch of beach disturbed on occasion ... read more

So this is it. We've not got long left now so this will be the final blog. Firstly, we both stink! There has been a water shortage all the way down the Caribbean coast which means the showers have been dribbles of water or a bucket and we've not been able to wash our clothes. My sandals are currently banned from our room and Neil has worn the same pair of shorts everyday for over 9 weeks! Secondly we had a throwing and catching competition on the beach and I won! Obviously I'm refusing a rematch or best-of-three. So we left Nicaragua and have spent the last few weeks on the fantastic Caribbean coast. We started in the north, in Tortuguero, which has no roads and so we took a lovely boat journey through the ... read more

In Pursuit of the Elusive Quetzal Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » Santa Elena By TicoTime May 6th 2007 Bell Bird One of the top two most sought after birds in all of Costa Rica (out of many hundreds), second only to the resplendent Quetzal. Its call reverberates through the jungle for a 1 mile radius and sounds... Wow, a lot sure has happened since May 4... Hope your seat belts are buckled. First thing in the morning on Jenny´s birthday, she went to check out of our hotel (Casa Real in Liberia) before we went for Desayunos across the street, an Iguana jumped down off of a roof right in front of her. I heard her scream and jump back and saw the beast, about as long as your arm. Very cool, and Jenny ... read more

We left San Jose on the 8.30am bus for Palmer Norte, about 5 1/2 hours journey away. We stopped for breaky at a wicked roadside restaurant that sold some very tasty food and (more importantly) had hummingbird feeders outside it’s windows which were attracting the little beauties by the dozens. We arrived early afternoon in Palmer Norte after a rather uneventful but pleasant ride and got a taxi to the nearby town of Sierpe which is where we’d get our boat to Bahia Drake the following day. Sierpe is pretty small with only a few hotels, a couple of restaurants, one convenience store but lots of tour operators. We had hoped to stay at the Hotel Oleaje Sereno as it was situated right next to the dock, but the Lonely Planet prices are a little ... read more

Good Morning! I'm back, Vince is still getting ready. We had pretty much the perfect day yesterday! We had a delicious buffet breakfast here at the hotel (which is run by Germans). Then it was off for the zipline tour! Wow! It was so fun! They have a bunch of ziplines that you take above the trees, some rappelling and a tarzan swing! We have some great pictures and video! The tarzan swing was SO scary! You pretty much jump off this platform from I don't know how high, and swing across the jungle. It was definitely one of the most fun things I ever did. After that, we headed over to the Monteverde cloud forest. But I'm sorry to say we didn't see any clouds in the cloud forest (have I mentioned how beautiful ... read more

Hello All, Yes... sorry if you logged on hoping to hear more about Jenn's travels... you're stucking hearing from me again... don't tell her I hijacked her blog again. So last night we had the most authentic Costa Rican buffalo wings, complete with chicken pizza and milkshakes... I gotta tell you, when you come to Costa Rica you gotta try the buffalo wings... Yesterday morning we had autentico fruta loopas con leche.... it was muy delicioso... for your gringos out there I had fruit loops and milk... Oh yeah... we also had some really good Costa Rican (as opposed to non Costa Rican, like we really get like Nicaraguan tenderloin out here which I'm sure is not as good as Costa Rican tenderloin... which reminds me of those really tight straps I had to wear ... read more

Arrived in Monteverde and it is just packed with adventures to do. We are staying in a treehouse type hostel and are getting no sleep for building and road works buy what the heck!!!! We decided on the canopy tours through the rainforest first of all in St Elena and also did the hanging bridges tour and then did the extreme canopy tour in Monteverde the following day. Being slightly scared of heights, i was a bit nervous but St Elena was really cool....they strap you up via belts and pulleys and attach you to the zipline cord and then send you flying for ages, hundreds of feet up in the air above the rainforest, hanging by your belt from the cord...it was so cool and you get awesome views and the wind is blowing ... read more

Horseback riding ended up being a great activity for all. We chose to do the 1.5 hour tour because we felt like Grayson would get bored. Grayson did not get bored….he loved it. He really enjoyed when the horse would “run”. The guide was entertaining as well and enjoyed watching Grayson smile when he motioned for our horse to run.... read more

Papa arrived safely (after some help from Joyce…THANK YOU JOYCE). Papa’s birthday was March 24th…so we started off his visit with a belated happy birthday cake. Grayson (like he did with Mokey) wanted to “help” blow out the candles. The next morning we headed out to Monteverde cloud forest. This is an area we had not visited previously. The last hour of the drive (30 kilometers) was unpaved, rutted roads. Papa and Grayson bounced around a lot in the backseat, but they were troopers. We read there is a reason why the roads are unpaved and the area isn’t easily accessible…..they would like to keep it remote and hard to access so that it maintains a bit of its small town charm. Monteverde is an interesting little town and the history intrigued us. Monteverde was founded ... read more

Hey there! Not a whole lot of news since last night. Were lazy and just went to the beach again today. Wow are those waves amazing. We tried to find a disposable waterproof camera to take pics of us in the breakers, but no dice. The waves can be pretty intimidating, won't hazard a guess as to the height, due to my horrible estimating skills, but they're big! On to Corcavado and the Osa tomorow. May be out of touch for a number of days, no idea how many though, depends if we stay in Puerto Jimenez tomorow night or not. Anyway, avoided getting to badly sunburnt today, although Tyler was much less fortunate-intelligent with the sunscreen. Well, on to Cahiuta after the osa, will be in touch and hopefully more pics! happy semana santa and ... read more
