Thailand!!!!

Published: February 10th 2009Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Phuket

So Kevin and Raymond just got their scuba diving training before we left, and it was one of the things on our must-do list for our trip. However, it is monsoon season on the east coast of Malaysia (where we had originally planned to go) so we decided to go to Thailand instead. Last minute yes, but fortunately Thailand is one of those wonderful countries where you just show up and they let you stay for 30 days. No expensive visa required, which I have greatly developed an appreciation for. Thailand was just as wonderful as it was last time. I was prepared to be a little disappointed because we were going to be at THE MOST TOURISTY place in all of Thailand (I think) but the Thai hospitality prevailed. Phuket is further south down the ... read more

Sentosa Island

Published: February 5th 2009Asia » Singapore » Sentosa Island

We spent Wednesday and Thursday on an Island that has been developed strictly as a recreational island called Sentosa. There are golf courses, beaches, Underwater world, Luge ride, historical sites, etc. Very planned as everything is in Singapore. We took the cable car to Sentosa Island from Singapore. It is very close, it just has the river betwen it. It was fun to ride over the tops of the canopy trees with their big leaves. They are building a casino on the island as well, which is bound to be over the top. We started off with a cheesy ride, and made our way out to Fort Siloso. Are you ready for more Singapore history? Sentosa Island was used as a military base by the British for many years. It was originally called Pulau Blakang Mati, ... read more

Catching up on Singapore Adventures

Published: January 31st 2009Asia » Singapore » Changi

More Singapore updates: Monday: Party day! Raymond's parents hold a big party for all the relatives and close friends. We started the day by riding the Singapore Flyer the first day it was open. It is a HUGE ferris wheel (165 meters!!!) that has been closed for about 6 weeks since it broke. Fortunately, it did not break while we were riding it. It has a nice commentary that tells you all about the Singapore skyline. I will give you a little bit of Singapore history... it was settled in 18-oh-something by Sir Raffles (I forgot his first name) from England. He signed an agreement with the Malay people to have it become a British colony. Mr. Raffles knew it would be a great place to have a port, and there it was established. Singapore has ... read more

New Year in Singapore

Published: January 29th 2009Asia » Singapore » Changi

Hi All, Wow, it has been a busy 6 days in Singapore!! I have not had time to blog at all :-0 so this will be a long one! I will break it down in days in case you have to read this in stages, because I may go on for a while :-) Saturday: Late late Friday night we picked up Raymond's friend Kevin from the airport (well, Raymond picked him up, I stayed in bed :-)) Saturday our purpose was to keep Kevin awake! We went back to the East Coast Parkway, one of my favorite places in Singapore, and rented bikes. We biked along the parkway for 7 or 8 miles. It is such a pretty path! Everything (and I mean everything) in Singapore is planned, and this path is no exception. It ... read more

Heavenly Mui Ne

Published: January 23rd 2009Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Binh Thuan » Mui Ne

Well, I reconfirmed my love for SE Asia at the beautiful Mui Ne Beach in south Vietnam. We took a bus (by Sinh cafe, which has been excellent to travel by) from Hoi An to Nha Trang, and then Nha Trang down to Mui Ne. As we traveled along, it was cool to see the change in landscape. The north has been nothing but jungle, but as we moved south it was more desert-like. All the plans got smaller, and was soon just shrubs and palm trees. Nha Trang is the biggest beach destination in Vietnam... growing like crazy, like everywhere else in Vietnam. Beachside high-rises everywhere, although I have heard that they are running out of money. We transferred buses for the 5 hr ride from Nha Trang to Mui Ne and arrived in Paradise. ... read more

Picturesque Hoi An

Published: January 18th 2009Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Quảng Nam » Hoi An

Well we are just concluding a wonderful 3 days in Hoi An. Hoi An is a beautiful riverside town about 5k from the beach. It has been raining pretty much the whole time, but it is warm. My laundry never dried. We stayed at a lovely little resort about 2k from town that is set in beautiful gardens. They offer a nice breakfast every morning, free bicycles, and lots of other perks. We walked to the beach one day, we walked all around town, and walked some more. We have done some major shopping here! Raymond bought 2 custom-made suits, and I bought 2 suits, a shirt and a skirt. Many of the girls in Vietnam have been telling Raymond how handsome he is (he says they equate big with handsome) and he looks great in ... read more

Historical Hue

Published: January 15th 2009Asia » Vietnam » North Central Coast » Thua Thien - Huế » Hué

Well, we are now on day 4 in Hue. I do love this city. I don't even know what day of the week it is. After my last blog, we had massages at the Imperial Hotel. I do not love massages in Vietnam quite as much as Thailand, but they do have really nice foot massages. We went and walked around the Citadel. Hue was the capital of Vietnam during WW2 and in the American (Vietnam) war. It was bombed pretty badly, but they are working hard to restore it. Hue is such a beautiful city. It is situated on a river with parks on either side - it sort of reminds me of Chicago/Lakeshore drive. There are kids everywhere shouting "hello" and they LOVE soccer - every park has a big group of kids playing ... read more

Vietnam Redeemed

Published: January 13th 2009Asia » Vietnam » North Central Coast » Thua Thien - Huế » Hué

Halong Bay is the most beautiful place I have ever been to! Hooray! Thankfully, we got out of Hanoi Friday morning. We took a bus to Halong Bay, where we boarded our boat, the Sun Cruise. It was a very nice boat, much nicer than carnival cruise lines. It had about 12 rooms, but as tourism business is slow here in Vietnam, I think we only had about 15 people on the boat. As soon as we got there, the air was cleaner, the sea smelled good, there were no car horns - it was lovely. Halong bay is made up of 4000+ islands made of limestone, and apparently has lots of caves to explore. A large number of islands (I think 1000+) are part of a national reserve. Friday afternoon we went to one of ... read more

Hanoi Hustle

Published: January 8th 2009Asia » Vietnam » Red River Delta » Hanoi

It sounds like a new dance move... but really, it's what you do when you try to cross the street here. We arrived into Hanoi without too much trouble. As we looked out the airplane window as the plane was going "guh-guh-guh-guh-guh" across the runway (which badly needs repaving) I felt like I was in 1970. That must be about the last time the airport had any work done to it on the outside. My first thought was "we are not in Singapore anymore!" Our driver picked us up from the airport and took us to the Sunshine Hotel, where we are staying. Along the drive, there were many more scooters than cars, and people pack all sorts of crazy things on there scooters. First I noticed a scooter with a cage on the back of ... read more

Jet Lag recovery

Published: January 6th 2009Asia » Singapore

Hello from Singapore, Well we arrived at 1am a couple days ago. It was a long flight - 23 hours of travel time. I forgot how (not) fun that was, but at least it was without complication. We got into warm and humid Singapore and got a quick bite to eat before heading off to bed. I was wide awake at 6am yesterday, as I am now. We got up and walked to the beach from Raymond's house. We went to the East Coast Beach, which has about 20k+ of walking, biking and roller blading trails. It is amazingly beautiful! There are huge canopy trees everywhere, it is of course very clean, and the trails run along the picturesque beach. After walking for a bit, we stopped along the trail at (big surprise) Starbucks :-) Yes, ... read more
