After Roatan we headed south to the capital, Tegucigalpa. Nothing really special here, just somewhere for us to get a direct bus to Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. One of the good things here was that we got to go to the cinema, a rare treat; the films were in English and only cost 75p! Once again, we took the easy option of getting the first class bus, just to avoid the hassle of 4 busses and the grief of another border crossing! It cost $20 for a 7 hour journey, had we done it the hard way it could have cost $8, and probably taken twice the time, always worth the extra cost! We weren’t expecting much from Managua as it’s just a jump off point for other places. We heard that it was a ... read more

Places Visited. Utila and Roatan After Tela we headed to the bay Islands, famous for its cheap diving. There are two main islands to choose from Utila the backpacker’s favorite and Roatan the more up market American tourist destination. We decided to do both. First was Utila as we wanted to be some where lively for New Year after our quiet Christmas. Most of the places on the island are geared up for diving so they offer cheap accommodation if you dive with them. We choose cross creek diving as they looked professional and the room was only $8 including air con so a real bargain! The air con was very much needed as it was very hot. Due to the cheap dives we decided to do our Advance diving certificate for $230 for the course ... read more

Places Visited. Xela, Antigua, Copan and Tela We decided the easiest way of going about this was to head to Antigua which is just south of Xela, as when we were last there we seen lots of places advertising tours to Copan ruins. It was all very easy and the only problem was that we had to get up at 3.30am and travel for 6 hours in a very uncomfortable bus! Copan was a very pretty little town with cobble stone streets and picturesque old colonial buildings. The ruins themselves were some of the best we have seen, very ornate and lots of sculptures compared to the others we have seen in Mexico and Guatemala. The pyramids were not as huge but the site it self was impressive. We also got to see lots of macaw ... read more

Places Visited. San Salvador, Guatemala City, Lake Atitlan, Xela Once again we took the easy way out and got the direct first class bus. We could get used to this easy traveling! Once we got to Guatemala City we got a chicken bus back to Lake Atitlan as I wanted to go back as I loved it so much the first time! Like I have mentioned before there is something about lakes and especially this one. Just amazing and to top it off the cheapest place we have stayed on our trip. I could live here it’s so perfect. We decided this time to also dive the lake as it is not often you get to dive at altitude 1562 m and it was something else to cross off the I have done list! The dive ... read more

Perquin to San Salvador. After Perquin we headed to the Capital. I had a plan to try and get to the capital so I could watch the highlights of the derby. To do this we had to get up at 4.30 am and catch 4 buses, Michelle loved this! We managed to get to the Hotel which had cable T.V about 20 mins after I thought it had ended. I still flicked through and my luck was in instead of showing the 20 mins highlights it replayed the whole match and I got to watch the rest of the game! Even though the result was foregone conclusions as city are shit it was still nice to watch! Of what we seen of the capital it was very similar to the other Central American capitals, overcrowded, polluted ... read more

Suchitoto to Perquin Perquin is near the Honduran border in the North East, supposedly a cool mountain town, could have fooled me, its been a constant 28ºc whilst we’ve been here! It’s famous for the central point of administration during the civil war in the 70’s and 80s. A lot of fighting went on here, massacres of innocent people by the army. We visited a museum about it, a tiny little place, a local guide shown us around and explained some of the photos and artifacts and he had first hand knowledge as he was a guerilla during the war, He went into details of some of the atrocities and stories of friends and family he lost and said that the war had to happen as they were at a point where the people weren’t being ... read more

Lago Coatepeque to Suchitoto. Lago Coatepeque looked very similar to Lago Attilan in Guatemala, very picturesque and surrounded by dormant volcanoes. There is something about being next to a lake that always makes me feel very relaxed and peaceful, it has a very carming and magical ora that make it very difficult to leave. We explored the local attractions. The most beautiful being the Cerro Verde National Park. This was a huge place to walk around and was full of amazing views and we walked along a few of the treks and took a few more pictures of volcanoes just in case we didn’t have enough! After the lake we headed to Suchitoto, a pretty Colonial town which was having a fiesta. For me it was the perfect day for a party, I got to watch ... read more

Places Visited - Santa Ana. After our relaxing time in Rio Dulce we had another border crossing to cope with to El Salvador. On paper this looked a lot of hassle and mither! We would have to get a total of 4 buses to get to where we wanted to go, Santa Ana a large city in the North of El Salvador. Luckily as we were going for the bus we bumped into the guy who recommended the Tortuga and he told us that there is a direct first class bus. We haggled the price and it worked out double of what we were going to pay for the 4 buses but was worth paying just to avoid the hassle! When I said double the price it still only worked out to be about 7 pound ... read more

We then headed back to Guatemala our new home it feels and it was good to be back. We made it to Rio Dulce in one day from Placencia, stopping in Livingston en route; realising there’s nothing there and finding digs in Rio Dulce instead, lake Izabal! We have found a very nice place to stay to celebrate Michelle’s Birthday (30 Nov). It’s a bit luxurious and pricey compared to what we usually pay but still only about 11 quid! The website is www.tortugal.com if you wanted to have a look. We have our own little bungalow and Michelle is well chuffed as it’s very nice and all romantic, so a perfect place to spend a birthday! It’s been great, free kayaks, stunning views, swimming and chilling. We visited a little place called Finca El Paraiso, ... read more

We headed ever south after Corker and stayed in another beach place called Placencia, the beach here was gorgeous, the stereotypical Caribbean postcard, swaying palms, blue ocean, golden sands. Doesn’t beat Piccadilly gardens on a sunny day though!! We did nothing but chill out and I got to watch Utd v Chelsea so more than happy apart from the result that is. That was it on our tour of Belize, short and sweet, which it needed to be as very expensive. Enjoyed the place and culture as all very different and the language of Garifuna, which is a mixture of English, Spanish and Swahili. Listening to the locals was just like the lilt adverts so brought a smile to our faces! The food her was also brilliant the standard of rice and beans and some jerk ... read more
