After Tunja was a nightmare trip and one I would like to forget. First we had to queue for 4 hours to get the bus back to Bogotá as it seems the whole of Tunja was trying to do the same. It was like being back at Alton Towers queues snaking around for hours with no site of the end of the line, the only difference was there was no great ride to look forward to at the end! We finally get on the bus which took another 4 hours got dumped on the side of the motorway as the driver couldn’t be bothered going to the bus terminal, an hours walk down the motorway to the bus terminal, just arrived in time to get on another bus for 11 hours to Popayan arriving at 7 ... read more

After Bogotá we headed to Tunja the City of churches. Which we were hoping would be a good place to witness the Easter festivities. Like I have mentioned before Latin America is a very religious place and this was proved in Tunja. On the Easter Friday there were lots of things going on and was difficult to try and be in a number of different places to try and see as much as possible. The streets were lined and packed with people and a procession went throughout the town, which included bands from school children to the military. The bands were split up by various congregations of the many churches all carrying plinths with various effigies of Jesus and Mary. They would all be barefoot and dressed in some amazing robes and a number of different ... read more

From Medellin it was off to the capital Bogotá. Another long bus journey of 9 hours which we decided to do during the day but shouldn’t have bothered as all you end up doing is sleeping anyway so should have saved it for the night. Bogotá believe it or not reminded me of Manchester about 15 years ago, lots of similar 70´s looking buildings but built more recently and especially the climate it was always grey and rainy! It was nice to be home! Our first night in the Platypus Hostel was very cold. Our room was in a part of an old colonial building that looks like it should have been condemned a few years back and the room consisted of just a bed with cold tiled floors and we spent most of the night ... read more

March 25th 2007

Medellin was next up and we had a lovely 15 hour bus journey to look forward to! To add to the excitement we were a bit nervous about this one as it was our first overnight bus journey in Colombia and we have heard about night buses being stopped and robbed. We looked on the Lonely planet website and there was a girl that was robbed and had a gun to her head throughout the ordeal and this was in a place we would be travelling through! The poor girl was in her first week of a year trip and it must have been awful for her and I hope she had the courage to stay travelling. After something like that I don’t know what I would of done? This is one of the reasons why ... read more

Close to Tatanga is Tayrona National Park, which has some beautiful beaches on a jungle covered coast. It was hassle to get their as we had to get a local bus to the park and then walk for a further 2 hours to Cabo a place on the beach we wanted to stay, which is most popular with travelers and we could see why. looking back it might of been easier to get a boat direct to the beach as there must be someone willing to take you. The main attraction is a Cabaña with hammocks sat on a hill over looking the beach and ocean. Beautiful scenery and would of been a great place to sleep, unfortunately they were fully booked and we had to settle for a tent close by to the beach. It ... read more

After our stay in Cartagena next up was Santa Marta in on the Caribbean coast. There were a few reasons for us to decide to come here. First was the tour to Ciudad Perdida (the lost city) which is in the middle of nowhere in deep jungle, like the name suggests. Built between the 11th and 14th century and then the people wiped out in the 16th century when the Spanish arrived. The trip takes a total of 7 days to hike there and back. After looking into it we decided to leave it as the pictures we looked at didn’t look brilliant and the cost of 115 pounds each was a bit pricey, it used to be 75, which we would have done. Our second reason was to do some more diving. We decided to ... read more

Cartagena was our first stop in South America and we were both a bit apprehensive due to Colombia being classed as a dangerous country. Before we bought are flight we had a look on the British Embassy website and it highly recommended that we stay away and it had lots of scary stories and reports which did nothing to help in our decision making. We then spoke to other travelers and read some travel blogs and the storey was totally different. Everybody was saying how much they loved the place and had no problems at all. It was a big decision to make because due to the British Embassy classifying it as a no go area our travel insurance would be invalid so would not cover any mishaps! We decided to not let this worry us ... read more

These are some of the Animals we have taken pictures of in the last 8 months in Central America. There are some wierd and wonderful and very strange indeed and thought who would like to have a look at what we have seen. I would say the majority of these pictures took about 30 shots each. A combination of a tempermental camara, shackey hands from too much drinking and wildlife that actual decide to move just as you take the shot, the cheek of it!... read more

Next was the Capital of Panama, Panama City and our last stop before flying out to Colombia on 10/03/07. The city had all the attractions of a modern affluent city with lots of nice and expensive hotels, at least 5 different shopping malls, 2 of which are about the size of the Trafford centre, one of them probably slightly bigger. Michelle was happy! We stayed at a basic hotel but nice enough for us, Centro Americano which had air con and cable t.v so I was more than happy. We were quite close to most of the attractions and it was cheap to travel around by taxi so was easy enough to get around. We spent few days shoping around as the clothes are so cheap, is was like being in Primark! Easily the best place ... read more

From Bocos del Toro we headed to Boquete which in in the middle of a mountain valley just over 1000m. It had a nice breezy and cool climate and it was a nice change from the heat of the beach. It is a popular place for agriculture, growing lots of fruit and vegetables and famous for its coffee growing. We got lucky when we arrived and managed to find a really nice place to stay. The Hostel was on the river and our room had its own balcony looking onto the river with great views of the surrounding valley, it only cost 8 pounds a night so a real bargain. As the town is fairly high up it would sometimes get misty in the late afternoon and we got to see some great rainbows. We would ... read more
