After our relaxing time on Isla Del Sol it was back to Cocacabana for the bus to La Paz the highest capital city in the world at 3660m. Due to its height they even have oxygen on hand at the airport to help passengers cope with the sudden change in altitude. The bus journey was easy enough and took 4 hours but we didnīt mind as the views along the way were amazing. La Paz it self is a huge city built in a canyon surrounded by steep slopes which over time have become even more and more inhabited mainly by [View Full Entry]

Next up was Puno for a short but sweet stop to get our first views of Lake Titicaca. The lake itself is the highest in the world at 3830m and also the largest in South America at 230 km long and 97km wide and looks more like a sea than a lake, it’s huge. Our first views of the lake were as we were on the bus and it looked amazing and we couldn’t wait to get a closer look. One of the other main reasons to come here were to see the floating reed islands that have been famous [View Full Entry]

Bolivia border crossing! Thankfully after the Peruvian border crossing the crossing from Peru to Bolivia was lot easier and had no hassle at all and probably the best border crossing on the whole trip it was literally door to door service! We got a bus direct from Puno to Copacabana, Bolivia all for 3 pound and took 4 hours. There were only fellow travellers and most of them posh British youngsters, a group of about 10 travelling together on a break from Uni for a month and you could tell as very naïve and not really prepared for South American travel! Unfortunately it was imposable to book on to the Inca trail as you have to book up to 10 weeks in advance and as a backpacker its impossible to book something so far in advance as you don’t really know where your going to be and don’t want to be restricted to a time schedule. Due to this we had to look into an alternative option which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The Inca trail costs between 150 and 200 pound depending on the company, some at ridiculous prices. So we were expecting to pay the same for [View Full Entry]

Next up was Cusco and Macha Picchu! In a way I wasn’t looking forward to Cusco as we have read and heard how touristy it is. It turned out to be very touristy but not as bad as we thought. Once again we arrived 2 hours early at 6am and again there was a friendly tout (Marie) on hand to get us a hotel room right on the main plaza for 8 pound a night, which is not bad going for Cusco. Maria turned out to be very helpful and we booked a number of tours with her, half day city [View Full Entry]

Next up was Nazca for the mysterious Nazca lines. I have wanted to see these for a long time as I have seen a number of t.v documentaries trying to work out their actually purpose and reason for existence and wanted to see them for myself. First of all as usual with everything we had to haggle for a price and managed to get a decent deal for a 30 mins flight over the lines for 23 pounds per person. We could of got a bit cheaper but wanted to make sure we got a plane with out any brackets that [View Full Entry]

After Lima was a four hour journey south to Ica for sampling the local wine and Pisco brandy, sand boarding and dune buggy riding. Ica and a close by town of Huacachina are an oasis in the middle of the desert and don’t offer too much apart from the various alcohol. The wine was piss poor and I didn’t think too much of the pisco, surprisingly Michelle loved the Pisco brandy but only straight, such a piss can! The best part of the town for me was the sand boarding, I have never been snow boarding before which it’s supposed to [View Full Entry]

After Another luxury bus journey we arrived in Lima 2 hours early at 6am and wasn’t very happy for it. For one I was fast a sleep and it took us a while to work out what was going on and for two we had to hope the hostel we had pre booked was open! Luckily it was and it was a very nice hostel and it should be for 12 pounds a night one of the most expensive places we have stayed at, but little choice as it was the usual of capital city prices being a rip off! Our [View Full Entry]

To get to Huaraz was our first overnight bus journey in Peru and what a surprise it was. The bus was very modern, big comfy leather seats that reclined to a near horizontal position which was perfect to get a good nights kip. There was in even a steward to bring you drinks and the bus journey started with a snack! The 7 hour journey cost 7 pounds which was expensive compared to our usual cost of travel but well worth it. We arrived earlier than expected and the first thing we noticed was it was freezing, it was 6 in [View Full Entry]
