On the Loose

Jub and Anna

After both spending four years at law jobs in the States, we decided to pick up and travel around the world last October in search of adventure and whatever else comes our way. We plan to be abroad until summer of 2009. If you want to subscribe to this blog, you can click on the blue "Subscribe" button below, and you'll get an email when we post something new.

We've decided to divide the labor on this blog. Eric (Jub) will do most of the writing and Anna will handle the pictures and editing. Please drop us a line if you have ideas or tips for us as we travel along. We love hearing from you. Cheers!

Heading North for a Taste of the Baltics

Greetings! Since last writing, we've returned home to reality, but we are determined to finish our blog entries ... so here we go. From Chisinau, we caught a cheap flight to the northern Baltic outpost of Riga, Latvia. Riga's reputation as a destination for British stag parties precedes it, so we weren't alarmed when we arrived in Old Town to the sounds of drunken raucousness. Indeed, the mayor has recently threatened to kick stag parties out of town after a string of “urinating on the Riga Freedom Monument” incidents, which, given the history of the country is completely understandable. And, it seems, the local mob has taken advantage of the boisterous drunks so many times that even the US Department of State warns against frequenting certain bars and clubs, which have been reported to coax men ... read more

Greetings! From Istanbul we caught a night train north to Bulgaria. We nursed a bottle of Raki (Turkish Ouzo) with our cabin mates before nodding off, only to be woken by border guards at 3 a.m. and told we needed to walk to the far end of the station to have our passports stamped. As we exited, the conductor pulled Jub aside, stuffed 15 Euros in his pocket, and asked for three cartons of cigarettes from the duty free store. So after getting his stamp, Jub headed to the store, but realized the conductor hadn't specified a brand. No big deal; ten minutes back to the train, ten minutes back to duty free, only to find they'd just sold out of the conductor's brand. Jub then repeated the process--trying to ignore that it was now around ... read more

A Too-Short Trip to Turkey

Greetings! Our time in Turkey was far too brief. Having only a few weeks to explore a country that is worthy of months, we chose to stick to two highlights: Istanbul and Cappadocia. In the end, we were glad to have seen two very different sides of Turkey, but are definitely planning another trip to Turkey sometime in our future to give the country its due. When we touched down, spring had sprung and Istanbul was chockablock with blooming cherry trees, tulips and lilacs. Judging from the plastic masks worn by every single airport worker and the dirty looks we received at the Istanbul airport (this coming from Israel, which reported only one case), you'd think Swine Flue had sprung, too. We eventually checked into one of the many boutiquey hotels cluttering the cobblestone streets near ... read more

Greetings; and apologies for the delay, but Jub was sending out cover letters this past week. Oh, is that you, Reality? From Jordan, we crossed over the King Hussein Bridge into Israel. In the preceding two months, we'd interacted with basically zero working women, since almost all the waiters, store and hotel clerks in India, Egypt, and Jordan were male. This made for an interesting contrast when our bus rolled up to the border, and two heavily armed 20-year old women from the Israeli army came on board to inspect our passports--in fact, the entire border-crossing was conducted by women who probably couldn't buy a beer in the States. But despite some horror stories we'd heard, the process (passport check, bag check, metal detector, explosives detector, lots and lots of questions about what we'd be doing ... read more

Greetings! Here's the lowdown on our week in Jordan, the most pleasant surprise of our trip thus far--particularly since it wasn't even on our original itinerary. We arrived in Jordan via ferry across the Red Sea, landing at the Port of Aqaba with several dozen Christian package tourists (the "Christ Died for Your Sins" t-shirts and reading aloud of biblical passages re: the parting of said sea were the giveaways) who were all quickly shuttled through immigration and onto waiting buses before the port officials finally stamped our passports, and we headed outside to a parking lot devoid of taxis. We continued walking to the main road, where a Jordanian man looking expectantly in both directions told us he'd been waiting twenty minutes for a cab, and that they came through sporadically, at best. He chatted ... read more

A Whirlwind Tour Through Egypt

Greetings! Finally peeling ourselves away from India, we landed in Cairo anxious to see what Egypt had in store for us. The plan was to meet up with Anna's parents and Bestafar (grandfather) for a trip up the Nile and then to hit Dahab on the Sinai peninsula for a week or so of relaxation and diving. Touching down, the Cairo airport provided an early introduction to the concept of baksheesh, one that would become intimately familiar by the end of our time in Egypt. We watched as those "in the know" pushed their way into the "diplomatic queue" in the customs area. Passports took air as handlers in three-piece-suits, customs officials, and tourists threw them back and forth through a small window as those of us clueless and/or baksheeshless haps stood in long lines, slowly ... read more

Greetings! "India: Week Four" was a frantic but ultimately successful effort to visit the country's far north and south before catching a flight to Egypt (although we weren't able to squeeze in a trip to Indian's northeast, the Bollywood version of which looks awesome in this clip, our favorite song from our time in India). Our first stop was Amritsar, up near the border with Pakistan, to visit the Golden Temple--the holiest site in the Sikh religion. Amritsar itself was nothing special, but the temple was an absolute highlight of our time in India. The complex is stunning--a stark white ring of colonial-style buildings and opposing clock towers surrounding a white marble walkway and crystal-clear pool, with the small, ornate temple and its hundred and fifty kilos of gold glimmering resplend... read more

Greetings - After three fun, frenetic weeks in India, our only problem was food related . . . we were both starting to put on weight from all the dirt cheap and delicious curry, dahl, and nan. Here's the lowdown on week three, which we spent in Rajasthan. Our first stop was Udaipur. We arrived somewhat weary from our sprint west, so we were happy to learn that one of the big attractions in town is watching the sun set over the imperial edifices of the small city's central, man-made lake. During our three nights in town we tried all the available permutations: First, we had cocktails on the porch of the City Palace, where we watched the sun swell and turn bright orange before sliding out of sight behind the stark white Lake Palace. Second, ... read more

Greetings - Three weeks in and we are still loving India, which keeps finding new ways to awe us and keep us on our toes. On day eight, we flew from Varanasi to Khajuraho, where we spent the afternoon exploring around--and blushing at--the town's two dozen eleventh century erotic temples. The original inspiration for the three tiered, two-foot high carvings chiseled into Khajuraho's fleet of red sandstone temples has been lost to history (or so we learned while listening to an audio tour on early 80's Casio Walkmans before Anna's ate her tape), but the stunning, deeply-recessed images include thousands of men and woman in various states of undress, and many more depicting scenes that rival anything found in the Kama Sutra. (We found ourselves asking, "would an elephant really do that with its trunk?" ). ... read more

Greetings! India is intense.  And awesome. (And way more interesting to blog about than the week we spent recovering from the flu in Yangshuo and Hong Kong). We knew we were going to like India on our way in from the Delhi airport, when the long haul trucks we passed were all decorated to the hilt with painted flowers and Hindu Gods, streamers, stickers, and colored tape swirled around their bumpers.  Really, the only thing that hasn't exceeded our expectations since we arrived is that we didn't see a single cow for three full days -- this, when we had prepared ourselves for there to be an entire herd riding in circles on the baggage carousel at the airport. On our first morning we headed to Delhi's Red Fort--weaving past the machine gun emplacements and metal ... read more
