Greetings! Monday we returned to civilization and flew to Singapore following a rewarding, week-long animal-watching extravaganza in the jungles, rivers and coastal islands of Borneo in the Malaysian state of Sabah. First stop was Selligan aka Turtle Island, a tiny barrier island fifteen miles off the east coast of Borneo that happens to be the most active nesting ground for endangered hawksbill and green sea turtles in the world. A dedicated conservation area, Selligan also has rooms for a few guests, staff, guides, naturalists and, as we learned after check-in, several uzi toting Ma [View Full Entry]

Java By Sunrise Asia » Indonesia » Java » Yogyakarta
Greetings - We left Indonesia late Tuesday for the surprisingly metropolitan city of Kota Kinabalu in Malaysian Borneo, arriving in time to revel in the McCain/Palin beat-down as it unfolded on CNN from our room overlooking the South China Sea. Our arrival in Malaysia followed a week spent taking in the sites of Java, Indonesia's most heavily populated island at five times the density of Great Britain. First up on Java was the 8,200 foot volcano Gunung Bromo. Diminutive by Ring of Fire standards, Bromo makes up for its size Napoleon-complex style by being among the most active in the [View Full Entry]

Greetings all!  The last week has been a whirlwind of boats, dragons!, sunrises, and deserted beaches ringed with coral.  We spent the first part of the week with eighteen fellow travelers aboard the vessel KLM Salawasi on a three-day trip from Lombok to Flores, via Komodo and several smaller islands.  The first evening, we watched the sun set and ate a dinner of just-caught fish around a campfire on a tiny private island shadowed by Lombok's highest volcano.  Our mellow was harshed, however, when the crew had us sit together by nationality (we were the only Americans) and told us tha [View Full Entry]

Greetings to all! We left Bali early Thursday morning and headed east by boat to the Gili islands, located just off the coast of neighboring Lombok. In doing so we faced a Locksian dilemma (Goldie, not John), requiring us to choose one of three distinct islands: the uber-mellow Gili Air, the somewhat livelier Gili Meno, or the more freewheeling atmosphere of Gili Trawangan (known as Gili T). Reports of great diving, cheap food and drink, and more reliable electricity eventually swayed us towards Gili T. We decided to travel via the fast boat, which advertised a two-hour crossing p [View Full Entry]

Greetings all! We left the beach craziness of Seminyak on Friday and made our way 1.5 hours north to the rolling hills and rice paddies of Ubud. While still decidedly on the beaten track, Ubud is most definitely a mellower and quainter side of Bali. Part of that has to do with our awesome hotel, the Alam Indah, which is a small, bungalow-style place with open, airy rooms set in lush, flowery, artisticly adorned grounds just outside the town center. We've been spending about half of our days pool-side and/or chilling on our day-bed at the AI, and the other half [View Full Entry]

It's official, Jub and Anna are on the loose! We touched down in Indonesia Tuesday morning, 25 hours after lift-off in Seattle. Our flights were thankfully uneventful, owing in no small part to the Lucky Golden Rat that we paid respects to during our layover in Taiwan (see picture). The only downers with the flight occurred when Jub realized that, although he had hyped the fact that we were flying a double-decker 747 with a bar on the second level to everyone we know (as well as a few we don't), our plane was, alas, a mere single-decker 737. The other [View Full Entry]

Have a Safe Trip!

We're Unemployed . . . Now What?! Here's an update on our post-work, pre-trip reality. After bidding adieu to our law offices, we settled into what we thought would be a relaxing week or so off from work / stress/ life before departing to Indonesia. Unfortunately, the Universe intervened, striking Jub with a thrown-out back the day after he finished work, and a doozy of a cold that started right when his back began getting better. Laying helpless in the hotel bed, he managed to fit in 10 hours of daytime television ("What Not To Wear," anyone?); 1 hour of [View Full Entry]

And we're off . . . We've packed up our belongings (including all my shoes ... sniff), handed over the keys to our renters, been vaccinated against every disease known to man, bought out half of REI, and somewhat figured out how to "blog." We'll spend the next week or so in a hotel right here in our home city, getting used to life on the "road" and to foreign pillows. We're looking forward to updating this site starting the first week in October from Bali, Indonesia. From there, it's anybody's guess. [View Full Entry]
