St. Andrew's School Grace Team

We are a team of eight pupils and two staff from a famous Berkshire prep school, embarking on an adventure far from home as we visit our partner school The Grace in the South African town of Siyabuswa. Our school has been supporting The Grace for nine years and has sent out a team every alternate year since 2007. We now have twelve children being sponsored there, and we are raising money to build them an Early Years Centre--team members are doing all they can get sponsored themselves, as well as organising events at school like a charity hockey tournament and a talent show, with more to follow this term. In fact our school has already raised enough to get the first phase built, and we are looking forward to seeing it, and meeting our sponsored 'learners', as well as seeing some wildlife in the Kruger!

As the holiday comes to an end and we look back on our summer, I'd like to thank everyone involved with what proved to be a very happy and successful trip. I have seen Mrs Reeves' lovely set of photos this week, which brought back memories, and I have met with a group who visited Grace last year and wanted to ask me all about the school and this year's trip. I have also written and sent photos to some of our sponsoring parents. During all of this it has struck me again what a fine, enthusiastic team you were, how supportive your parents have been, how much you did both in raising funds and while you were at the school, and the lasting good you have done for the Grace children and for our relationships. ... read more

Many thanks to all parents who got to Heathrow so early today for the pick-up, and for your kind comments and appreciation to Mrs Reeves and me. It was truly a pleasure to take such a good team with us, and we had a bigger impact than previous groups (as well as raising more funds). It was also a lot of fun, as I hope you have realised after your children have spent time talking to you about it-- a process which I expect will continue for several days, at least... Guys and gals, remember to keep taking your malarone! A few more days are needed to be on the safe side, even if you were not bitten as far as you know. Can I also request that each one makes a CD (though other media ... read more

Greetings from the team on our last day at Ekukhanyeni--or, as Izzy would say, 'Sup famalam!' We have really enjoyed our 'rest' day here before the ride back to Joburg tomorrow. This morning, after a ridiculously long lie-in till 7.30 and a relaxed breakfast, we finally got the children off the lawn, where they were practising long jumps over each others' prone bodies, to go and visit the nearby Sudwala Caves, which were (Tom) 'All right--really cool and big--amazing!' and (Izzy) 'Dark, humid and scary!' Funny how the boys enjoyed them more... The girls did, however, sing 'Amazing Grace' in the cavernous 'Amphitheatre' there as the guide wanted a singer to demonstrate the perfect acoustics; and we all liked shopping for relatively cheap precious stones in the shop, and sitting down with ice creams afterwards. We ... read more

Sorry the blog entries have been so brief since we came down to this end of the beautiful province of Mpumalanga, more of which we saw today. I hope that as we are spending a little more time here tomorrow (by popular request of the children, though Hudson Reeves safaris are also grateful for a more local day after three heavy driving ones), we shall get the opportunity to put more on here, but in the evenings I get only 15 minutes at best, and the youngsters cannot come on as (a) our host is reluctant to have school children on her only computer, and (b) in that time they wouldn't say much! So, today we had a wonderful day admiring breath-taking scenery. Even the base camp we started from at Graskop is at a higher ... read more

We have just returned from a long day out. Rusks and hot drinks were at 5.30 am so we could leave before 6.00 to be at the park by 7.00 when the animals are active. The children had no problem getting up early, and during the day we saw as much of the park as we had in several days before, with the help of a brilliant guide, Trust, who trains other guides. In fact it was a quiet day for sightings and we didn't see any lions :( or rhinos, but we did see hippos, giraffes, zebras, warthogs, buffaloes, wildebeest, a crocodile and many types of antelope and bird. We were held up on the way out by a complete traffic blockage caused by the sighting of a leopard, but we were unable to see ... read more

Just a quick blog tonight as time on the laptop is restricted. We are all safe, sound and very happy here. It is a lovely place in the hills above Nelspruit. We had a good journey down, stopping for fresh orange juice near Groblersdal, biltong at Loskop, a Wimpy in Middelburg and a late takeaway lunch at our traditional stop on the N4, Millie's. We arrived here at 4.15 to a warm welcome. The children have explored a bit, played in the spacious games room, had a lovely supper and now are relaxing in front of the log fire--very cosy. Tomorrow we are up at 5.00 for an early start off to the Kruger, where we plan to spend the whole day. We have met our guide, a very friendly man called Trust, who we are ... read more

Messages first--Mrs Reeves wants to say that everyone has been mightily malaroned this evening, and Archie says he will try to get some biltong but we don't know yet whether we'll be able to get it to and through customs. I think getting it TO will be the greater problem as Archie and Tom could eat it quite happily all day, and when they are asleep, Mr Hudson may take over! It has been a day of gifts, thanks and farewells. Hendrick told us we were the salt of the earth and a light in the darkness. He said just as a little salt flavours a big dish, so we had made a big and lasting difference in The Grace. It began to come home to us what we and St. Andrew's as a whole has ... read more

Dear parents, readers and people who have nothing else better to do... (only joking!!!) First of all our day started, with waking up, funnily enough and then breakfast followed, again delicious... After that, we arrived at the Grace School, late again! we were escorted to the front of the assembly and Mrs Ntuli talked to the children for a while and quite a few rounds of applause followed. Then Amazing Grace was requested by the seniors, and our brilliant ensemble was appreciated by everyone. Then Mrs Ntuli called for a learner to thank us for all our deeds, and at first, no-one seemed to want to... Finally she started to count to three and two boys semi-reluctantly stepped forward and muttered credible thanks, which were actually really nice, and then we shook hands with them. Mrs ... read more

Hello fellow followers, it is Archie speaking catching up on yesterdays news, we forgot to do it. the assembly was amazing, not just because we sang and played Amazing Grace. Tom did a reading from the bible, Mr Hudson spoke about it. Mrs Tysall then read out a letter from a 15 year old girl called Carys, who has been passionate about South Africa since she was four. It was very moving. Mrs Ntuli then asked Grace learners to thank us. Two boys, Musa and Taps came out first but no girl. So Mrs Ntuli asked for a girl to come to the front. Just when we thought no one was going to come up. Up stepped Mbomi who gave an amazing speech that left people in tears. We made beads with Grade 4 (year 5) ... read more

Siyabuswa is a place of contrasts. There are some new developments which are changing it, but there is still much of the old and the poor. It is a dusty place at this time of year so children walk in the roads to keep their shoes clean before school. Even the poorest homes are swept and tidy, yet litter is everywhere, and goats and cows wander freely. People ride in the back of trucks, children play barefoot in the streets, electricity comes into homes on extension leads, but nearby the civil servants have gleaming white cars in their drives behind ornate fences and beneath security cameras. Girls sell oranges by the road while 4x4s go to the Mall, which could have come straight out of Reading. A man with seven children and a tiny house with ... read more
