Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Chumphon May 23rd 2006

Aah, Koh Chang. Islands are what great memories are made of, and this one has it all. Long stretches of beach, easy living, coconut trees, fruit milkshakes, all interrupted with the odd hippie. We had three great days on this, Thailand's second largest, island and were sorry to leave it. However the rain on the final day was the clincher..... ... read more

Breakfast at Grace. Felicia had to work, so I was on my own again—woo-hoo!!! Started out by getting a leisurely coffee at Coffee Mandalay. Walked around for a while and got lunch at Rachadamnoen Kitchen & Gallery—had the Burmese curry, which was excellent. On my wanderings I ended up by the city prison and noticed a massage shop across the street. What the hell, went in, asked for a one-hour foot massage and was talked into an hour and a half. Best reflexology I’ve ever had in my life! Went to Guest House New Zealand for a beer and Fe met me there after work. Had dinner at QVI.... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Samui May 22nd 2006

We left our dear little sweat box and headed to the next Island (Ko) Ko Samui! Landed at ferry terminal and started hunting for our transfer that was, or we thought to be included in the package.. But as with most things whilst travelling not everything goes to plan.. We ended up taking a local bus to our accommodation costing 50 baht! Thats like really cheap! We arrived at our accommodation after getting a little wet (tropical rain storm, nice to cool us down) and booked in with some reservation as to what our acc was going to be like. To our surprise it was the Hilton compared to what we were staying in. It even had Sky TV and its own movie channel although somewhat suspect! As we had our own little beach with the ... read more

Another beautiful day in paradise. I am not really sure what day of the week it is or the date, but I know we are still in May. It seems like the only way that we find out anything resembling the date is during the day and late at night in Thailand they have fights. Fighting seems to be a huge part of their culture, tons of promotions for the fights and trying to get peope to attend. They have fights Sundays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. It helps a lot to know that because when the pick-up trucks drive by blairing on their loud speakers "FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT TONIGHT!! GET SOME REST, STARTS AT 9". The trucks slow down traffic in both directions (as the roads are narrow and can really only accomodate a single lane, with ... read more

Hey all, Just a very quick note to let you know that I'm still alive and kicking. The last few days have been an absolute nightmare (picture crafty Thai con artist scamming naive Canadian travellers. Horror ensures, not limited to: pick up truck taxi rides in torrential downpours, shitty accomodations with lizards, ants, wood lice, geckos, cockroaches IN THE BEDS, departure with all too much money to people who don't deserve it, and consequently the overwhelming urge to leave Thailand and get home as soon as possible.) BUT, just when we think we will never see the light again, the sun comes out. After reaching my limit, and being totally exhausted and disappointed, the sun is shining today for the first time in over a week, and I have finally found a place to stay (on ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Ayutthaya May 21st 2006

Hey everybody, Here's the eagerly awaited Ayuthaya (Pronounced: Are ya tired?) and Sukhothai entry. Once again Lonely Planet has woefully dropped the ball. Contrary to popular belief, the Ayuthaya temples are way cooler than the Sukhothai temples. Don't believe me? It's true! We stayed with a Thai reincarnation of my grandmother in Ayuthaya. And, just like staying with my grandmother, it was fun in a small dose. Our first day in Ayuthaya was spent on her front porch doing absolutely nothing. A little reading, a little toast-eating, etc. She practically had a heart-attack. She was apparently under the impression that we were leaving in the morning and missing all that fabulous Ayuthaya has to offer. Once these fears were allayed she calmed down a little bit, but of course kept the fresh fruit chopped up in ... read more

Yeeeesh, it's been an interesting past few days. After waking up to monsoon rains (yet again) on the fourth day in Railay, I decided it was time to move on and try to hit some sunshine. The problem with backpacking in Thailand, or any tropical country for that mattter, is that once your stuff gets wet, it doesn't dry without the sun. So after having my bag and most of my clothes soaked for close to a week, without getting the chance to really dry off, things started to mould and rot - not the most pleasant of situations. So after a longtail boat ride, a 2 hour minibus ride and 2 ferries, we arrived on the island of Koh Lanta, hoping the weather might be a bit better. Wrong. It pissed down the entire time ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Khao Sok NP May 21st 2006

Well after some hemming and hawing, Sarah and I finally made a decision and decided to stick with the plan and head to Khao Sok Ntl Park in souther Thailand on the peninsula. As were checking out of the hotel in Kamala, I discovered I had lost the safety deposit key! Yikes! the spare key was in Phuket Town so we had to wait for the owner to get it. Then she thought she had lost her copy as well! I am not typically this ditzy to lose such things, we can only figure that it fell out of my backpack on the tuk tuk the nite before. A few hours delayed we headed to the public bus station and hopped on an air con bus, pretty nice actually and drove to Khao Sok for about ... read more

Quick update with some pics to get up to date. Managed to start the new school semester on the 1st as planned. I & Loui still havent got our contracts yet. The proposed contracts were kind of unfair so we typed up a list of shite we wanted changed & handed them back to be seen by the directors. That was a week ago. Had a long weekend break a few weeks ago so went down to Hua Hin which is a few hours out of Bangkok, pics to follow. Checked out a swimming pool ontop of a shopping mall sometime ago. Nice place, they had rapids and slides. Loui decided to come along after a heavy session on the whisky. The results were quite ammusing. After swimming he decided to wear Aom's pink/red girls shorts ... read more
