So I decided to take another look at Patong, in the day. I had heard that the beach was rather like Kuta (Bali) so I headed out to another look during my drive around the Island -- a drive that was seriously interrupted by Paradise Beach (see next article). Anyway, the first thing to know about my island tour and revisit of Patong was that I did it in The Monstrosity -- my day-glow green "American Style Jeep" that was apparently made by Honda (or at least the steering wheel was). The Monstrosity and I headed out to see the island and Patong was our first stop. The main area of Patong is made up of three main roads that run parallel with each other and with the beach. Those roads are then interconnected with smaller ... read more

The problem with paradise beach is that it is very distracting. I mean, there I was planning to tour most of the island when I got to a dead end. The Monstrosity and I looked up the hill - narrow partially paved track into the jungle and a sign, worn and unclear, that indicated that Paradise Beach was 1.4 k ahead. I slid The Monstrosity in to gear and started up the hill. Now, for those of you (Robin, Baz, Jenny and others) that have gone off-roading with me, it can be an adventure. Just a few months ago Jenny and I ended up in the middle of BC, Canada with a flat tire as a result of a little 4X4 adventuring in our rented Jeep Commander®. Anyway, this trip was no exception, it was an ... read more

Jenny and Laura arrived on Sunday, the day after we got back from Laos. I left Fiona pottering around the huge weekend market, buying t-shirts and chopsticks, while I hung out at the airport. Again. I know that place so well now. They came through really quickly, no problems at immigration, apart from Laura having a row with a Korean couple who tried to push in front of her in the queue. Needless to say, they failed miserably. And she didn’t get lost, or leave the airport, or anything, as she was under strict instructions to stay put in case I couldn’t find her. We met Fiona back at the flat, and went straight to the Raintree Spa about five minute walk away, and had massages and facials for a few hours. It’s a very hard ... read more

Hiya everyone. Nice to hear from you all. It is our third day in Ayuthaya which is about 1.30 hours north from Bangkok. When we arrived we couldnt find the place we wanted to stay at, but we came across somewhere much better with really helpful staff!! We have been to temples and more temples over the last two days. The temples here are older/ruins (see pictures) but also had a little excusrion on the train (5p one way) and then motorbike transport from the station (15p for both of us one way) to a restored palace/temple to save our little leggies for a change (see pictures). Also we went to Tescos yesterday. It was massive! We had to go on a 20 minute mini bus ride to get there but it was worth it. We ... read more

Hey dudes, Just wanted to add a quick update saying that I've posted some pictures on the previous entry. I'm still on kicking back on Koh Phangan, and well be doing so for the next 2-3 days before I make tracks for Koh Tao to do some snorkelling and diving, if the time and weather permits. Life is still good here - how's everything at home? I hear the Oilers are still kicking face, which is wicked to hear. It also makes for a good time whenever I run into other backpackers from Calgary - nothing like a little Battle of Alberta on the beaches of Thailand! Looks like Edmonton wins again! (Sorry Michelle!) Anyways, someone keep me posted with how they're doing - it's too bloody expensive to write emails, update the blog AND check ... read more

Hello again! Well you know that trip back to Koh Tao in order for us to chill out and de-tox a bit? On the day after the full moon party, everyone who was staying at Coral decided to move on to Koh Tao aswell so unfortunately there was no escaping the party lifestyle for another few days! We were staying at Mae Had village which is just south of the main town called Sairee. Sairee is where everybody goes for the parties. It's quite interesting in that there is a party every night, but each night it is at a different bar and the bar owners seem to have a mutual understanding of this and are only open late on their particular night. It works really well as it ensures that every night is a busy ... read more

When we arrived back on the mainland we followed the flow of the crowd and made our way to the car park, where everyone else got on buses and drove away leaving us standing there by ourselves. Within a short time it was like a ghost town, although a coupl people came and asked where we were heading and quoted 50 ponds to give us a lift. As we had a ticket saying we were getting picked up we decided to wait, and wait, and wait. A little later, a clapped out land rover and out stepped a chap looking like he had been living in the jungle for the most part of his life. His role to take us to the national park! Really nice chap.. Little broken English! Several hours later we arrived at ... read more

Had breakfast at Grace (have you noticed we love this place?!). Fe went to work so I went for coffee at Libernard Café. It was raining all morning, so I ended up spending a few hours there—read the newspaper, read my book, read travel books and maps…went back to the Tri Gong to read some more and relax. Had a beer with Felicia at The Local and then went to dinner at Huen Phen. Packed and Mr. Adam (proprietor of Tri Gong) drove me to the airport. My flight was delayed over 3 hours. At least they gave me a snack voucher, which I used for a banana split Blizzard. Finished my book and sat around until it was time to board. Didn’t get back to the P.P. House until around 3AM….... read more

Patong Beach... it even sounds a little sleazy. Actually, the beach itself is rather nice. Soft sand, big waves -- went for a relaxing walk (is it wrong to listen to California Dream'n in Thailand) on the beach this afternoon. The town, though, is another matter. The main drags are littered with little kiosks selling CD’s and DVD’s, Gucci sunglasses, offensive t-shirts and a variety of beachy clothing, tacky objet d’art, switch-blades and flick knives. Oh, and then there is the countless massage places (most of which do not appear to offer the ‘happy endings’ that Thailand is apparently famous for.) And then there are the bars… now this is a thing to behold. Countless Asian women standing around beckoning men to enter these very dubious ‘bars’. I found it laughable that this country goes to ... read more
