Exactly how Lonely Planet puts it and to be fair it's absolutely bang on with that! Anyway, on the plane over I met a sound Aussie lad called Erik who's working in Hong Kong teaching English and had a few days off so fancied a trip down to Thailand for a change. Was chatting on to him on the plane then we wandered round the airport trying to sort our visa's but us being dozy gits, we went and queued in the bit for Eastern European and Middle Eastern people to get a visa which wasted over an hour whereas we could've just wandered straight through the main bloody gate - doh! Luckily both our bags were sat on the floor waiting for us in the collection bit so it was all good. I went off ... read more

The overnight traing from Chaing Mai to Bangkok last night was reallky quite luxurious - we didn't have to provide our own toilet paper or anything! We did drink all of the Thai wine that we had purchased, several beers, a liter of vodka and some rum.....And all of that before the night club (Yes - the train had a night club car!) opened at 9:00 p.m. We then went and danced - and Athena made new French friends. :-) We all slept relatively well - it was a much nicer train really. :-) Although squat toilets on a moving train make life very interesting. We got to Bangkok about 7:00 a.m. this morning to find our rooms weren't ready yet. No surprise there. So several of us went out to the weekend market and to ... read more

So, in the last couple of weeks, yet another ice cream shop has opened within a block of my house. That brings the total to six. Within a block! They all seem to do a nice business, especially in the evenings. The ice cream shops are so nice here. They all have waitress service, they take the order, and even serve water with the order...even at Baskin Robbins and Swensens. They are all much more snazzily decorated than those in the US....some of them are very nice with comfy armchairs to sit in and magazines to browse. They must be taking design cues from Starbucks (2 within walking distance). The new one we went to this evening was excellent....they had flavours like Thai Tea and Passionfruit Sorbet (along with Mint Chocolate Oreo). Yum. But, perhaps, it ... read more

Well, it's been a whirlwind in Bangkok. We arrived to the 30 degree weather on January 2nd. Although the weather was hot, it wasn't overly humid, so it was fine for us northerners. Once again, our luggage followed us safely and efficiently and we were met by our private tour guide and driver at the airport. Our hotel - the Amari Atrium - was beautiful. By the time we were settled, we decided to dine in the hotel as the area around the hotel looked (at first glance) a little rough. The next morning, we met our private tour guide, Pat and our driver (we never did get his name). Pat took us on a tour of several of the main Buddhist temples in Bangkok. Although there are about 400 temples in Bangkok alone, we only ... read more

This is not the first time I've traveled to Asia, and it probably won't be the last. Before every departure I scoff at the length of travel time. I've been on plenty of long flights... in hind site they always seem quick and easy. I'm sure in a few weeks this trek will be no exception. Looking back on the last few days I see it clearly as the grueling trek that it is. Needles to say, I'm happy to be finished. Here was my itinerary: Jan. 2nd 1:00 pm: Courtney drops me off at the Fung Wah for my $15 3+ hr ride to NYC. 4:30 pm: Arrive to a rainy NYC where I meet up with Trevor, watch Notre Dame get beaten by Ohio State, then off for my 2nd annual Egyptian feast the ... read more

We left early the next day to go and see Claire’s Dad. Hogmanay Now, it’s quite a long story. Claire’s parents are divorced and her Dad now has a Thai girlfriend. I should point out, before you jump to conclusions, that they met in the UK and that she is widowed. A lot of Dad’s friends in his provincial English town have Thai wives and it was through this circle that they met. It’s probably not long term though as the girlfriend plans to move back to Thailand later this year. Anyway, the “mother hen” of the Thai wife circle has organised Hogmanay for us: dinner, drinks and karaoke. They all have homes in a place called Satahip, South of Pattaya which is South East of Bangkok. That afternoon, we went to the local beach. It ... read more

Here we are in Bangkok, and despite the horror stories people have told us about the place, we love it. It's clean and efficient with great nightlife, and we've ditched the sophisticated lifestyle and are tucking into the street food with great gusto (with no fear of gastro aggro). After the rigours of India we're unashamedly happy to be staying in Khao San road, with the rest of the Farang (foreigner) throng, which is fully equipped with bars, restaurants and knock-off designer gear. We haven't entirely abandoned the cultural side of things, so we joined the queues for the Grand Temple. If you ever go, you might want to avoid the heat and humidity be choosing your arrival time carefully. Four in the morning should just about do it. As it was, we were there at ... read more
