Thailand is an amazing place. I Unfortunately only spent 5 days here my first time around but I will be back in about a month or 2 to give it a full rundown. Lloyd, Dave and I arrived in Bangkok and slowly found our way to every backpackers startign point, Kho San Road. We found elliot and Meredith sittig in front of McDonalds, Bottle of Rum in hand ready to give us a proper introduction to THailand. I only got to hang out with Elliot for 6 hours but we made the best of it. We started off the night buying some Pad Thai and then of course an assortment of grasshoppers, and baby larva....Yummy after a few shots of rum we were ready to indulge. They actually didn't taste bad but Lloyd left affected by ... read more

After an extensive buffet breakfast we were shuttled back to the airport for the 7 hour flight to Bangkok via Thai Air. Their partner, Air canada, could learn some lessons from them. The colourful uniforms of the stewardess' exentuated their cheerful smiles and desire to be of service. The meals were tasty as far as airplane food goes. Being the last served, the menu choice was limited to baked smoked eel. An open bar throughout the flight helped make the meal settle well. The eel was not as good as Kim Dormar's on the Island but when in Japan, do as the Japanese do. Singha beer at 6 percent helped settle me into snooze mode so the flight took little time. I could see from circling in a wide radius that Bangkok had grown a lot ... read more

So I arrived in Bangkok late Sunday night. It was kind of scary going to my guest house because it felt deserted since it was so late. Also, the staff wasn't very welcoming and the place is as we say in America, a shit hole. I felt like I was in the beginning of Apocolypse Now. But I guess that's what I get for paying 5 dollars a night. The next day I felt much better though and decided to just spend the day walking around and adjusting to the atmosphere. I headed for Khaosan Road which is basically a street in Bangkok that is filled entirely with backpackers and Thai people trying to sell them fake designer clothes and other souvenires. It's much more than that though. There are people that offer to put your ... read more

Boy did we need a good foot massage today. Aside from the usual black feet and dirtyness of the day our foot soreness had reached a new level. Yep, we got lost! It was so exciting! We have mastered the skytrain, some buses, and the boat system (also public transit) but the streets and out of scale maps are a whole other thing. Us being not so concerned with time (that is we like to take lots of it to do what we want to do...planning is not our priorety) this worked out perfectly. Being lost was probably the best thing that happened to us today. we conquered china towm and were the only foreigners as far as thge eye could see for most of this day. we walked through the mechanical repairs section of town ... read more

On the train from Surat Thani to Bangkok I was really not looking forward to coming back here, since my memories of the city were rather nasty. But when I got here, I actually found it quite relaxed, partially because I am staying in a different part of town this time and also because I am kind of used to the Asian ways by now... I shared a double with Diego for the first night in a little street near Khao San, but on the next day his girlfriend arrived, so I had to move out into my own room. The three of us visited the Grand Palace grounds together. Then they left to go up north, but I was quite lucky as I had met a very friendly Thai girl the other night, Au. It ... read more

I have been in Bangkok for 4 days and I feel like it! My head is pounding because I had a few too many Sanghas and White Russians with some Swiss people I met at the Volk Bar (a small bar made out of a converted Volkswagon Bus) last night. I woke up this morning in my little box of a room, which was about 120 degrees, and really wanted to die. Even my daily freezing cold shower and American breakfast couldn't make me feel better. But oh well...it was a good night! The trip has been good so far. It took me quite a while to get out here though. I flew 11 hours from Honolulu to Taipei, Taiwan where I missed my connecting flight to Bangkok. No big deal though...it's funny how less stressed ... read more

Ahhhhhhhh! Pardon that but I just finished a lengthy and exhaustive 30 minutes with picture related upload only to have Internet Explorer crash. It is reassuring that half a world away and nothing changes. Alas. So not to be outdone by yesterday, we have returned to the cheapie mall and started putting in serious time at the internet cafe. In addition we also picked up our plane tickets to leave for Burma tomorrow. Some of you may know it as Myanmar. Some of you may know it as the Golden Land. Others may have no idea what I am talking about. Basically this is a military dictatorship neighboring Thailand. We know very little about it except what we read in our book and on other people's travel blogs but it looks fantastic and exciting. We ... read more

Last night was the hottest yet so didn't sleep much in my cheapie room with fan but no air-con. As luck would have it I have a different room tonight & air-con - wahey. I'm sure there's no much sympathy from my freezing British chums ;) I have made arrangements to travel tomorrow to Ayuthaya (meaning invincible) which is an old capital that Burmese invaded in the 18th century just to prove them wrong! Loads more Buddhas no doubt, but these will be in ruins or decapitated. Travelling overnight Friday on a sleeper train (it better had be or I want a refund!) to Chiang Mai where I'll do the tourist trek & get to ride an elephant and stay in a hut in a local village. Monday I'm flying down to Phuket cos it's a ... read more
