Well hello all,as you may have gathered i made it to Bangkok alive (despite the attentions of a moody German on the plane),and am now sat in an internet cafe somewhere in deepest darkest Banglamphu. Arrived at Bangkok Airport this morning to queue with hundreds of others for 1 1/2 hrs just to get into the country past immigration(Take note Tony Blair!!!!),from there it was a quick sidestep past the illegal taxi touts(thanks Lonely Planet),from where i hooked up from a girl from London and was able to split the cost of the cab to the Khao San Rd area. Tried to go to sleep in Guesthouse but no chance thanks to the adrenalin coursing through my veins at being in such a Smoggy,Dirty,Hectic City-I love it already. Will spend the next couple of days here ... read more

Went to Thonglor and Ekkamai to look for an apartment. No luck. Spent some time at an Internet café to check apartment listings. Looked at a few places, mostly dumps. Walked several miles. Took BTS (Skytrain) and taxi back to Marife’s.... read more

Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok is probably the most beautiful airport I have seen to date. It looks like a beautiful white lotus. Our trip was mainly to Bangkok and Phuket. ... read more

Took a river taxi from Wat Rajsingkorn to Phra Athit and walked to Khaosan Rd. Khaosan area is where the majority of backpackers go to arrange travel and visas. Bangkok is the hub for travel around SE Asia. This area has some of the cheapest accommodation (I didn’t say nicest) and a high concentration of budget oriented travel agencies and deals. Checked email at an Internet café.... read more

We have finally made it to Asia!! After 14 hrs from Seattle to Taiwan and another 3 1/2 hrs to Bankok, 2 sketchy meals and 3 mediocre movies, we arrived to the unimaginable city of Bangkok! The second we got off the plane we could already feel the differences from windy Lethbridge and rainy Seattle, when we were met with amazing amounts of humidity, smog, and the chatter of Thai around us. Our first goal was to get to downtown Bangkok where we could locate our guest house so we caught the local train for about 10 baht (30 cents Canadian!) On the train we immediately felt the Thai hospitality when people were eager to make conversation even if they knew very little English. When we reached downtown after the 45 min train ride we walked ... read more

Arrived Taipei, we had a 40 minute lay over. In that time we had to go back through security and rushed to the next plane for our connection to Bangkok. The funny thing was that when we landed in Taipei and were running to get through security we completely passed by the gate we were going to and had to go around the airport and got to the gate a completely different way. I always get a little frustrated when I’m hurried and have to go way out of the way to end up somewhere close to where I started! Arrived in Bangkok around 2 AM. Met by Marife, Todd’s family’s friend. By the time we got out to meet her it was almost 3AM. She told us that she had actually gone out to the ... read more

We have been having an absolutely wonderful time. Thailand is certainly beautiful - the beaches in the south are second to none, and the north where we are now, although completely different, has its own charm. We spent four hours this morning on a winding road heading to this funky little village high in the mountains. Scooters abound here, and Stan is out at this moment practising with his new wheels. We shall be here for a couple of days before heading back to Chiang Mai and then off to Laos by boat on Tuesday. Everything so far has been excellent - Singapore was squeaky clean and very expensive, great place to visit, wonderful people, very high standard of living - however, just a lttle too perfect - makes you wonder. . . and the most ... read more

It's our last day in Bangkok today (we're getting the night bus to Phuket in about half an hour which takes about 15 hours!!) I'll be sad to leave as this is a great city but also really excited about going down to the islands! Went to the weekend market on Saturday - it was absolutely huge (apparently there are about 7,000 stalls!) We got the local bus there at about 10 and left at about 4 and think we only covered about a quarter of it! Still can't believe how big it was! Spent about 50 pounds and bought: about 15 t-shirt tops (I couldn't resist!), 2 pairs of jeans, diesel trainers, diesel zip up top, a few strappy tops, about 5 bracelets, 2 skirts, an adidas bag... and thats just from the top of ... read more
