Hello Everyone Its my 2nd day here in Bangkok. The flight over here was hell!!!!! It took 11 hours for the flight to Beijing, with 3 movies in Manadrin. We got in Beijing in the afternoon and ive never seen pollution soo horrible in my life. We went through the most inefficeient airport, and then caught a 5 hour flight to Bangkok. We got in at 1 am and slept in a hotel near the airport. After that we moved to a hostel on the infamous Khao San Road, where all the backpackers go when first arriving in Thailand. Here you can buy any designer clothes or watches etc, but its all fake. Its pretty intense, everyone swarms you to try and sell you stuff, or to try and con you into spending your money. It's really hard to keep track of time out here. I was hanging out with some of my new found Canadian friends yesterday trying to figure out what day it was. Is it Sunday? No, it's Saturday. No, I really think it's Sunday. What about the date? 7th? 8th? Not sure. Well, as I sit here in front of the computer, it's now Monday morning (that means it's Sunday afternoon in California!). Yesterday was an eventful day and I have to admit, I'm a bit sad to leave Bangkok. Later this morning I have a flight to Phuket (pronounced Poo Ket), an island off the west coast of Thailand that was moderately impacted by the tsunami. Although heading to the beach is always a good thing, I'll miss some of my new found friends... Let's rewind ... read more

It was a very long day and I need to get up early tomorrow for the River Kwai trip so I won't write much tonight other than the briefest details. I'll fill those in at a later time. The morning was spent touring the Royal Palace - I've never seen so much gold in my life! We returned at noon and I had my "welcome drink" at the Lobby Bar - it was just watermelon juice and Sprite. I then went up to the revolving observation deck on the 84th floor and took some photos. After that, I went in search of a shop to transfer another full memory card to CD, having to make my way through the blocks of garment wholesalers. I stumbled across Pranthip Computer Mall - seven floors of computer, electronics, and ... read more

On 2006 Jan 5 Thursday, in ChiangMai Sleep in, got up and pack using the new backpacks (with wheels). After checkout, we walked to the market and bought a pair of sandals for Phyllis. The old pair broke in two. Since we still have a few hours left before we get picked up for the 7:00 pm bus to Bangkok, we went for a 2-hour massage. Knowing the cost of massage will be high in Bangkok and in the islands, this maybe the last time for massage in Thailand. At around 6:30 pm, a tuk-tuk picked us up to a gas station where we board the bus to Bangkok. The bus has a capacity of about 35 passengers and quite spacious. The journey took about 10 hours, and the bus stopped twice, the first time for ... read more

Having spent almost every minute of the last week together, it shouldn't have come as a surprise that Tim wanted to go to the airport to see me off today. We became very attached to each other in such a short time and she cried last night when we began talking about how long it would be before I could return. Today, I was the one who began tearing up in the taxi the closer we got to the airport. She stayed with me in the terminal until I went through the last security checkpoint before my gate (I waited until the flight was called before going through). Our farewell felt like a scene out of a romantic movie and I don't remember ever feeling happier and sadder at the same time. As Tim's English improved ... read more

Only one night left, and since Christine and I are flying out at 8am tomorrow morning, we really don't have the whole night. We have to be at the airport tomorrow morning by at least 5am, and the airport is minimum an hour from our hotel, so we are going to have to get up at 3am! I am considering not even going to bed tonight. That way I will be exhausted on the plane and not worry so much about the bumps. In other words, I won't be such a baby during turbulence :) Anyway, I must say, the best night's sleep I have had yet on this trip was last night. I am sure the alcohol helped a bit, but for some reason, the sleeper car bed was the most comfortable I have had ... read more

It looks like I won't have much free time here in Bangkok because I booked several tours. My first is of the Royal Palace tomorrow morning at 7:30 and then I£ taking a dinner cruise on the Chao Phraya River. On Monday, I spend the full day in Kanchananaburi at the famous bridge over the River Kwai. And my last day here will be spent on a full-day excursion that includes a visit to the floating market, an elephant ride, Muay Thai boxing, and several other things I've forgotten. This schedule doesn't allow much extra time for shopping but I'll have to find some time for a trip to the post office to mail some of my souvenirs home. The hotel's business center offers mailing/postage services; perhaps they can handle a parcel. After booking my tours ... read more

That's the best way to describe Baiyoke Sky Hotel. I'm on the 68th floor (rooms only go to floor 74; restaurants and other facilities occupy the upper floors with observation decks on the 77th and 84th floors - the latter is an outdoor revolving one). The room is extremely luxurious with a huge bathroom, a separate office area, a dining alcove, dessing area, and two windows overlooking Bangkok far below. I'm wearing a really cool Baiyoke bathrobe as I type this. My room is so high that my cellular service is very intermittent, however (Tim and I tried to call each other several times but after the signal kept dropping, I finally called her successfully from the bathroom phone - the bedroom phone had interference). Riding in the second elevator from the 18th floor lobby, my ... read more

After the second leg of my flight (this one was over 6 hours long), I arrived in Bangkok at 11:30 p.m. last night. Customs was a breeze. Once out of the airport, I grabbed a metered taxi (the unmetered taxis try to rip you off) to get me to Khao San Road and then wandered around until I found my hotel a little after 1:00 a.m. The hotel has got some charm but it's definitely in the low budget category. I wanted to start out with humble beginnings. :) Shambara is the name of it. It's located in this little alley off Khao San Road (I've got to get a picture of this - it's classic). The hotel has 8 small rooms that share a bathroom at the end of the hall (with 2 showers & ... read more

Ok forget frankie goes to hollywood for now. I'm sure every second blog in the Bangkok section is called "one night in bangkok" (including my other one). It's good to be not sick anymore (after a good relax and a long perusal of "lonely planet") and it's fantastic to be a bit more clued-up about the place we're staying in. Purchased a bus map for 69 baht (hehe) and that has saved a lot of cash - plus the price was hilarious. The way that the bus map works is all the route numbers are above each stop so you find where you want to go and where you're at now, if any numbers match up you yell out "bingo" (not quite) and wait for that bus to come along. Only costs you about 6 baht ... read more
