ENTRY 52 — December 30, 2004 TSUNAMI While finishing up our travels in India we began to realize that our quest of circumnavigating the globe would be helped by paid employment. I kept my ears open and looked for jobs. Both Miranda and I agreed that we were ready to work overseas once more. As we sat and talked to a nice young couple in Calcutta one day, they chanced to mention they had worked as teachers in Bangkok, Thailand. They asked if we had ever considered teaching. The idea made more and more sense as we considered our educational background and experience (We had taught school in both Lahore and Butterworth). Bangkok became our next stop after leaving Calcutta. Bangkok: a clean, modern city Our first impression of Thailand — Bangkok to be exact — ... read more

and i am about to go back to my hotel. this has been a crazy last couple of days. we slept in yesterday, and decided to have low-key day. we spent most of the day at the wat pho (one of the many grand temples in bangkok.) words cannot describe how beautiful this place is. we saw lots of monks (including baby monks). after our day at the temple, i was in the mood for pizza, so we ate at a little pizza place, which had the most amazing pizza. i know you're thinking, pizza? but this was different. it's something i can't desribe, you have to experience it yourself. moving on, back at the hotel, we started to really feel the jetlag, so decided to head out for our first true thai massages. AMAZING!! I ... read more

BAck in Amazing Thailand. After Siagon we took a Mekong Delta trip that was 2 days long and ended in Phom Phen in CAmbodia .The trip was only average and it didnt help that it was raining again !!. Phom Phen wa sgreat and the Killing Fields were very moving. The Cambodian people are much more friendly than the Vietnimese. From there we spent a very dull Xmas in a small country town with one resturant called Kratichie. Yhe highlight were the Fresh water dolphins that came up to about 2 m from the boat. It was also great to see the local people. From there it was over to Siem Riep to see the temples at Ankor. They were of course very impressive . The town was also very nice. Then it was the world ... read more

Happy New year everyone whether you were in Hellgill,York,Blackpool or Sydney im sure it was a wild one, my day consisted of a life threatening Tuk Tuk ride around bangkok- better than any adrenalin rush if your sleepy followed by a spot of shopping on Khosan rd. That evening we had a meal in a great location by the river in downtown Bangkok, the meal wasn't up to much but the company/ views and singha beer were fantastic! We started celebrating at 8 as we brought new year in from Sydney, i had an unexpected phone call from oz at their bewitching hour which was great to speak to everyone. We left the reataurant with illuminated boats floating by regularly to head to Khosan Rd. where it all happens! We reserved a spot on the side ... read more

Happy New Year to you all to everyone!!! Yep, we're in Bangkok safe and sound! Been here for 24hours and already we're on the move to meet up with Stu's mates on a little island in the south called Koh Lanta. New Years Eve was pretty tame as we we're sooooo tired after our flight. Stu didn't sleep at all, which I blame for his unusual choice of NYE grub. Yes, with out losing a bet, being on fear factor or even just a drunken error, he chose to eat a nice selection of fried insects from one of the stalls on the Khoa San Road in Bangkok (Ever since I saw Ray Mears do it I've fancied them and they're not actually that bad - stu). For fifty pence he got a little bag full ... read more

As predicted (and told by many other travelers), the bus trip from Siem Reap to Bangkok was filled with disasters. First, the bus scheduled to leave at 8:30 does not leave until almost 10am. So myself, along with 30 others are left to stand next to the highway for 1.5 hours waiting for the bus to arrive. When it finally comes, it is a beat-up jelopy that is so uncomfortable and un-airconditioned (even though we all paid for the aircon bus). The 5 hour journey to the Thai border is a bumpy, dusty road that plays havoc with my lower back. But I endure the trip and make it to the border. I am able to jump the 45-minute Thai imigration line (in the blazing sun) as Orly and Shiri are at the front of the ... read more

The beaches in Thailand are cool the water is so warm compared to home. I chilled at the beach by my hotel a few more times and the water was so warm even at night. Me and some other guys made sand barriers to protect our fort well after the sun was down and when I went back into the water to wash my hands I couldn't believe how warm it was. I went back to Phuket a few days later. Said goodbye to Moo, wasn't sad at the time but now I kinda am I never even took a pic of him or with him, thought it wouldn't be manly at the time but now I regret it. Oh well it's off to Bangkok for New Years. I came back to the city on the ... read more

... read more

Happy New Year everybody!! We are in Bangkok right now. We just finished eating breakfast (one of the best i've eaten in a long time). Our trip here was insane. From Austin to Los Angeles, the plane ride was rather boring. The most excitement were mountains, and some passenger passing gas. The arrival at the LA airport was a bit stressful. The airport was so large, we spent an hour figuring out where our next departure was located. We finally made it, and waited for less then 30 minutes. While waiting, it was so strange seeing so many different kinds of people. What was even stranger was the Asian family we sat next to. The whole family was speaking fluent spanish, and I understood every word. They were from Hong Kong. The ride from LA to ... read more
