I was slightly skeptical about wandering around this city alone today, being completely illiterate, but I found it a lot easier than expected. Jennifer had to work all day so I ventured out on a solo mission to hike the Inwangsan Shamanist Hillside. It is Seoul’s most famous shamanist shrine with Buddhist Temples, interesting rock formations (Zen rocks), natural springs and a fortress wall bordering it. I was very surprised by the amount of garbage left everywhere, I assume by visitors and shamanists themselves. It was everywhere. I was also surprised by these 2 little brat dogs that came running out of one of the temple homes while I was heading up the hillside. There were smaller than a cat, dressed in pretty little sweaters and one actually nipped at me; I was shocked. The ... read more

Wow in the 2 days I've been here I've experienced a lot of Culture. Jen's been great filling my days with adventure even though she's has to work from 2pm till 10pm on the weekdays. There is so much to see here in the City and she too has yet to check out so it's great. So today I woke very early, 7:30am, got dressed and headed out to the subway with a piece of paper and written directions on where to go. Jen had a lesson in the morning at 7:00am so we met up in the subway station near where she was and continued on together to the Gyeongbokgung Palace. We got there around 9am had a great white chocolate mocha and muffin for breaky and made it for the changing of the ... read more

Yesterday the 18th of March I finally landed in the buzzing city of Seoul, South Korea. I was met by a familiar face and a great big hug. And after a quick money exchange we were off. It took about an hour to get into the city and to Jennifer’s apartment by bus and subway. It flew by as Jen and I filled each other in on the events of lives in the past year. When I arrived it was 3am my time and only 6pm here. So to try and make my jet lag minimal I took a shower and we headed out for a few cold ones. Jens boyfriend Jason, a world traveler from England, joined us and we drank beer, ate interesting things on a stick and had informative conversation till around ... read more

12-27 10:30am Airport. LAX. Waiting to board the flight. as most of you know, I was extremely nervous about taking this flight since planes scare me. You would think that I wouldn't go to India because of this fear, but the second that I won't go on a trip because of fear is the day you can call me old. Although, that and the statistics that I'm more likely to die on the freeway going to the airport than on an airplane itself is little compensation for my obsessive compulsive Woody Allen type mind. I was nervous leading up to the flight, going over such innane thoughts of would I rather the plane explode in midair or have it plunge to the ground so I'd have time to say goodbye to Danielle. So this is your ... read more

So when is the magical when I get up and everything just seems normal? It always feels like it is right around the corner...I have confidence moving around and stumbling my way through conversations, I know enough people here that I am now woven into the tapestry that is Bundang. And yet, something is still unsettled. Maybe that is a good thing. Maybe on the inside I don't want to be settled. It is refreshing to, for once, be shaken up- for life to be unpredictable, and for my identity to be a little blurry. It makes for an easier transition- easier growth. It is strange to me that I have not gone out of my way to develop in depth relationships with the people I live with yet. I like the flexibility of staying on ... read more

I have a gym membership now. That was a big thing to get out of the way. And it has been the success I wanted it to be. It has pulled me out of my physical slump. Mornings are easier now. But a cough has been going around. Actually, it is a brutal Asian cold (not to be confused with Asian flu, I hope) that lingers in the form of a dry, irritating, nagging, painful in that itchy sort of way, cough. This, in and of itself, is not the end of the world. However, Dreaded Class 14 has created a situation in which the cough has become a very big obstacle I have had to tackle. Week 1 of Christine's Visit: We were pretty damn happy to have someone from home. It was so fun to show someone around our new home...with all its craziness. We packed a lot of sight seeing and touring into those two weeks. Here is a quick low down on week 1. - Dmz tour. This was a pretty interesting day. The whole day had this certain uneasiness to it. To think that we tourists were having a good'ol time, metres from North Korea...where the only things we hear about are atrocities of some sort. We were told when to take photos, and when not to. We would look over to N. Korea, but were not allowed to point or make any gestures as we were certainly under surveillance. Walking around the compound (shown in the photos), ... read more

Well I’m finally taking my first really serious hiking trip on Sunday March 11; this will be a multi part entry due to the length of the hike. This trail starts about 2 hours south east of Kunsan and travels north along the mountain ridge until it meets the East Sea, not too far from the DMZ. I will hike a section of the trail once a month until the journey is completed. The Day Before Well as most of you should know, I’m kind of the procrastinating type, and I have known about this trip all week. So you think I would have had one of my buddies who can shop on base (of all the NICET guys we have brought over I’M the only one that can’t shop on base) get all my hiking ... read more

Sorry to keep doing this to you all... but we really must share our doings or we'll go insane with the company of only ourselves :P. I know it's been a while since we spat our vile doings your direction, and for that we apologise, but this will be a really big hock for you all... one of those real throat clearers... anyways... enough of that. We've been all around the place seeing and doing various things. In short, I also went to the DMZ, it was pretty cool. We had to sign a piece of paper saying we agreed that the Korean goverment wasn't responisible for our lives... not too shabby. We've been out and sang songs and stuff as usual... there's been a few class parties and games of pool to be had. We've ... read more

Well, I survived the bitter winds and the freezing temperatures of Seoul. I also survived 42.something kilometers of running.....something I will think twice about the next time I am presented with the chance to run a marathon. It wasn't so bad the first 16 miles, but after that I wanted to end it...haha. seriously, though the legs cramped up and I found myself looking for a subway station to make a last minute ditch....luckily there weren't any nearby at the time, so I finished in 4 hours, 43 minutes. It was rough, everyone was sick of the evil wind (I thought Kansas had pretty bad winds in March, but Seoul definitely has KS beat), as well as the awful cold. The day before the race it was 50 degrees, but there was a yellow haze from ... read more
