We wanted to wish everybody a Happy New Year and share some pictures from the first month of the year. So far January has been a very cold and snowy month, right before New Year’s Day we received about 16” of snow and the temperature has not been above freezing the entire month, last weekend another 6” of snow fell, I know for many of you this is not very much snow, but for the lack of snow removal equipment and the style of removal, it is a lot here. For removal they plow the farthest lane from the highway on-ramp, so if it is a three lane expressway, you have to drive over two lanes of deep snow to get on or off the highway. We have taken a few hikes in the snow, one ... read more

First I would like to apologize to all my friends whom I did not get in touch with or see while in Aspen, DFW, and Chattanooga, next I would like to thank those who opened up your home for Pearl and me to stay at during our "Road Trip". Pearl left for the States a week before I did, so when I arrived she was already acclimated to the time change, this worked out very good for me. The first Saturday I was there we went to Ketner's Mill for a Arts and Craft fair, on the way there and on the way back we stopped at various yard sales, which Pearl loves. Monday I was sick and stayed in bed all day, I had the rest of the week to get ready for my NICET ... read more

Well when it's July you know it's time for the annual Mud Festival, and as of years past it rained while we were there. This year they doubled the size of the area and added a big stage. We tried a new place to eat at this time; they served almost the same items, mullusk. They had clams, mussels, scallops, and a few others that I don't know the names, basically you have a grill on your table and you put them on the grill; when they open just pop 'em in your mouth. Pearl and I kick it up a notch, we bring garlic butter and mozzarella cheese, we get a tin plate add the butter and cheese, and put it over the fire, when the shells open we put the juice and the meat ... read more

This was a new area to hike for both of us, and it was great. We started out by just driving on farm roads and stopping at any interesting sights, we stopped at one small lake that was covered in lilly pads. Later we stopped for a bite to eat, we found this little place om a back ally, I cannot remmber what our main dish was but we did get over 25 side dishes. The hike we decided to take was along a creek and by two large waterfalls since it rained the week before, still monsoon season when we went, the creek was and waterfalls were great. The hike was shaded by trees combined with the coolness of the water made the hike very plesant.... read more

The apartment we live in has started a hiking club; they meet once or twice a month at a nearby park and go hiking. Our first hike was at Sinsido, an island just south of Kunsan. To get there we drove along the new Saemangeum wall, the same road I ran the Half Marathon. Well when we got to the start of the trail and looked up I knew this would be a typical Korean hike; we went up over 100 steps. We stopped by the water and had lunch, one of the members who was not that familiar with hiking and packing lunch brought rice for everybody, over 5 pounds. It was a nice hike, many ups and downs, but lots of great views. ... read more

We took a hike at Maison Park, which means Horse's Ear, these mountains always reminds me of mountains in Tailand. We went here on a rainy day and it was still crowded at the main temple site. It was a long walk up to the temple but you are rewarded with a very cool sight, although it is not a very old temple, it is one of the most unique temples I've been to here in Korea. On the way down from our hike we passed all thses rib BBQ shops and we were very hungry, so we went in and had ribs, they were horrible, the cook did not know how to properly cook them, they were directly over the fire and staying there a long time to cook, they were so dry. After our ... read more

Hawaii May 6th thru May 10th I was in Hawaii, this was my third trip to Hawaii, but this time it was to take a NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies). I arrived in Honolulu at 10:00am on Thursday the 6th, I first went to my Hotel hoping I could get an early check in and freshen up from my long flight, but the room was not ready, so I went to where my NICET test would be, afterwards I went to Pearl Harbor and spent a couple of hours walking around and looking at all the monuments and maps, I was unable to make it to the USS Arizona monument as the tickets are free the start handing them out at 7:00am, by now it was around 3:00pm so I went back to ... read more

The day before our big trip, and it’s snowing in Kunsan, I take my guys out for dinner, Gamjeatong, potato soup. After dinner we get home and pack, we decide to stay up since we have a taxi coming to pick us up at 2:30am to take us to the bus terminal for our 3:00am bus ride to the airport. As we are waiting for the elevator I jokingly say “Let’s not leave any luggage”, last year we (actually it was me) left a bag in front of the airport and did not notice until we were in the check-in line. As the elevator doors close that’s when I realize that I don’t have my wallet….doohh! We arrive at the airport and check in and go through security and customs, once through we go to the ... read more

My wife and some of her friends have created a travel club, and this past weekend was our first trip to Wolchulsan National Park, in the South Western part of South Korea. This trip was recommended to us from our friend in Seoul, who also gives us "Bee Acupuncture", his son-in-law lives in the area (Yeongam), he is a professional photographer and wrote a book about Wolchulsan National park and the surrounding area, so he was our unofficial tour guide. We arrived in Yeongam Thursday afternoon and met up with Mr. Bak, who would be our tour guide for the next day-and-a-half. Our first stop was a massage place, we all enjoyed massages, you start out by laying on a bed that vibrated with magnets, we had to remove any credit cards and our cell phones, ... read more

As all of you might know I came to South Korea over four-and-a-half years ago, January will be Five years. Anyway, my main reason for coming here was to get debt free and save money, well two-and-a-half years ago I met a very special person whom I've spent a great deal of time with and have gone on some great travel adventures with, well this past September we got married, so this blog is really more about my experience with getting married here in South Korea. Let me start off by saying that getting married here is very, very expensive, it is nothing for a couple to drop $20-30k, Pearl and I wanted to do this on a tight budget, and Pearl did a great job at keeping the cost down and still incorporating allot of ... read more
