I am 22 years old, and a recent graduate of Benedictine College in Atchison, KS, USA. I left for Seoul, South Korea in August, 2005 and I have now been here about 6 months. I will leave in August, 2006. I am teaching English at a Hogwan (private school). Life can be a little crazy at this particular school as in most Hogwans.....but anyways I hope you find what I have to say somewhat interesting and funny at times....and maybe even convince you to come here for a year!

What can I say about my trip to Kumgangsan? It began with me barely making it to meet the bus because of me being stupid and trying to take the subway all the way to Hongdae...i made it with minutes to spare and we were off on our 5-6 hour drive to the East side of Korea and up through the DMZ to the mountain of Kumgangsan. Crossing into the DMZ was a strange feeling, it seemed like we were crossing a line into a world of the unknown and stepping back into time by at least 20 years. The first thing I noticed was how the landscape changed from green plush mountains to tall rocky mountains. There were barbed wire fences along both sides of the road so no one could cross over and everywhere ... read more

Well, I haven't actually added a blog for a loooong time...so I guess I'll cover Buddha's Bday, as well as the 3 day weekend and the latest saga at the Hogwan. Maybe I'll forget about the Hogwan saga...don't feel like talking about work at the moment. Anyways...didn't too much for Buddha's Bday. Anna and I went to Insadong and saw a bunch of lanterns and stuff set up for the parade, but we had moved on to Gecco's by nightfall...we're never ones to pass up a nice margarita! hehe. This weekend we had 3 whole days!! YAY! No Wishing Well English School for 3 days!!! Anyways, Thursday night we went out, Friday we hung around outside and basically did a whole lot of nothing..but it was a beautiful day so who cares! Saturday it rained cats ... read more

Well, we had an exciting St. Patty's Day...not really. We all hung out at the Dublin Bar in Seoullung and had a few drinks. Claire and I left at like 12:30 or some insanely early hour like that....but we had a big day planned for Saturday, so thats okay. Saturday we spent the whole day in Seoul and hit all the major shopiing places. Claire bought a wig and we got chased by some crazy old lady (an ajuma)...meaning an old lady in Korean. See Claire was trying in a wig and after about 3 wigs, the lady got kind of mad and proceeded to chase us out of the store...man for a pretty old lady she could run fast...haha. So we jumped in a cab and headed to Itaewon where we had this weird kind ... read more

Well, I survived the bitter winds and the freezing temperatures of Seoul. I also survived 42.something kilometers of running.....something I will think twice about the next time I am presented with the chance to run a marathon. It wasn't so bad the first 16 miles, but after that I wanted to end it...haha. seriously, though the legs cramped up and I found myself looking for a subway station to make a last minute ditch....luckily there weren't any nearby at the time, so I finished in 4 hours, 43 minutes. It was rough, everyone was sick of the evil wind (I thought Kansas had pretty bad winds in March, but Seoul definitely has KS beat), as well as the awful cold. The day before the race it was 50 degrees, but there was a yellow haze from ... read more

Well, its February in Seoul...and its a lot like January, haha. We had a good snow on Tuesday, and i promptly fell on my butt walking to school. It was pretty embarassing until the guy behind me fell down too. Saturday I got up at 4:30 am to get myself to Seoul and run along the Han River with my running group. We ran 11 miles and then went to the U.S, base and ran a 5k! So a total of 15 miles. Needless to say, I am a little sore today, but I feel more ready for the Seoul International marathon in March. Then after the run I was off to Damdaemun for a little shopping trip. I was overwhelmed by the staggering number of Gucci purses for only 20 bucks, so of course I ... read more

Well, let's see. I met up with Anna and Mike today at around noon and we took the bus (that we waited for for about 30 minutes I swear!) to Seoul. They hadn't really seen too much yet so we were going to go to a palace, but ended up going straight to Insadong to meet up with Corey and Rebecca. Insadong is a really old street full of shops with Korean souvenirs and teashops and stuff. So anyways, we are waiting outside Starbucks and this reallllly old man comes over and starts talking to us. He wants us to sign his book and write where we are from in it. He proceeds to tell us that he likes to talk to foreigners, etc, etc....he was really funny, so we signed it. And he did have ... read more

Well, today was interesting....I made an appointment a long time ago at Toni & Guy to get my hair done today. I always go to the same guy because he speaks English and he does a good job on highlighting and cutting. I had thought that it was strange that they were open on Chinese New Year, but whatever. So I show up today, and he had opened the salon just for me! Oh my gosh...I was embarassed that he had done that. I could have gone another day....so I spent 3 hours in an empty salon with my hairdresser. Kind of strange, I felt like a celebrity. Anyways, he did a great job and I a happy. Toight I went out to dinner at TGI Fridays with Anna and Mike. Mike ate the hugest slab ... read more

Well, it is Chinese New Year, and its pretty nice at the moment because everyone seems to have hightailed it out of Seoul. I can actually get on a subway without having to push myself into the car...haha. Last night a bunch of my friends and I; Karla from Canada, Tim from Canada and his friends Jeff and Devon, Mike and Anna from England, Corey from Canada and his wife Rebecca from New Zealand. It was great, quite an international crowd hanging out in an Irish Pub in Korea....haha Kind of an oxy-moron. We had a great time, Mike and I were drinking beer from North Korea (I know shame on us for supporting the communist beer....) and I made to bulleyes in darts, pretty cool....Today is actually a really nice day, kind of a prelude ... read more
