OK, so it wasn't the Red Mile. It was Jogno...right smack dab in the middle of Seoul. OK, so there wasn't 15,000 screaming fans pouring down one strip of Calgary downtown roadway, flashing skin and banners and beer bottles. There was actually about 500,000 people, and they were happy, and they were bathed in the warm glow that only thousands and thousands of lotus lanterns can give. It wasn't Calgary, but it was incredible. Besides, if I was at home, I would have only got the hockey game. Here, I got the hockey game....LIVE (thank you Corey and Tyler, from the bottom of my heart)....AND I got the best festival I have ever experienced in my life. My headache wasn't pleasant, but it was my own fault, so I took my lumps without too much self ... read more

Over the past weekend, Meredith and I decided to take a spontaneous backpacking tip to Seoraksan National Park, which is said to be Korea’s most prominent geographical region. Over dinner the Tuesday before, we both realized that neither of us had any more exams that week and thought it a great opportunity to take advantage of the long weekend. The weather was finally warming up, and we found ourselves tired and overwhelmed by the consistency of Seoul-life. I borrowed a backpack and packed some heavy cloths anticipation the cold nights on the “Snow Peak Mountain” range (which is the English translation of Seoraksan), and after Meredith’s class on Thursday, we picked up several days worth of food provisions at the Grand Mart and were on our way. We took the subway to the bus terminal and ... read more

Just a little smear of filth to let you all know I'm still alive and reasonably well. Things are going pretty well over here... I've just moved into my new place, which is much better than the old one. We've been and done a few more things, had the kids at school out for an Easter day today, did and egg hunt and all (I've never put together so many kinder surprise toys in my life). Also came 6th out of 193 in a photography contest.... Feel free to browse the "Chrome" competition on www.dpchallenge.com for "Peaty" which is my photo!... read more

The first sign of spring in Korea comes with the overwhelming number of blossoms that line pathways, tower over streets, create walls, and brighten the grey streets of Seoul and stone buildings of the Yonsei campus. At this point, the weather is still cold, despite the fact that the lingering feelings of spring allude to warmth and make you wish you could put on a mesh shirt and a flowy skirt. These beautiful blossoms last a total of about 2-3 weeks. This means that at any given place where over 100 buds can be seen, you are likely to see a handful of Koreans with their cell phone’s taking pictures amidst the flowers. In Tennessee, people find a sense of honor in hunting out and being photographed with the most drunk and oddly composed individual ... read more

Maybe it is a necessary part of travel. Sickness, the kind of sickness that takes over any will to fight, that makes your hair on your head hurt, that makes you feel like you are being twisted inside out, is almost a requirement of long-term travel. It is true that the body is exposed to all kinds of new and exciting diseases, bugs, germs, pollutants, and the like, but what seems more relevant is that the mind and the heart are also exposed to a new kind of outlook. Getting traveling bugs is almost a physical manifestation of “shedding one’s skin”. In Rita Golden Gelman’s book "Tales of a Female Nomad" she talks about her first experience ‘on the road’, in a new cultural context for an extended period of time. When in Mexico, the beginning ... read more

This is Cynthia! We landed in Incheon, South Korea mad early this morning, around 7am. okay well technically that's not so early, but if you're still on Vietnamese time, it's around 5am in the morning for me. We have a 10 hour layover so instead of just lounging in this humongous airport, Jason and I decided to take the express limousine bus to Seoul, Korea. This was one of the nices buses we have ever been in, lounge type seats, foot rest, and heater at your side. Oh yeh, u must be wondering why I thought having a heater was a good thing. It's FREEZING in South Korea!! I thought the South is always supposed to be hot and sunny?? What happened. Jason and I have been walking around in tank tops and linen pants all ... read more

Ok Gerry, maybe that last one was a bit of a downer. This will be the 'Happy' version of the "Happy Easter" entry. Kristy and I headed to the Children's Grand Park here in Seoul last Saturday (day before Easter) to check out the Cherry Blossom trees that everybody had been talking about. These trees are also in every second Korean television commercial (fake ones of course), usually with a romantic couple embracing under the slow motion shower of petals (who knows what they are advertising...but they are clearly in love and happy about something). They were very beautiful, and when a brisk breeze picked up, they DID rain (looked more like snow) petals. It was great. It was also fun to watch all the Koreans with their cameras (phones) whacking the crap out of the ... read more

The Lotus Lantern Festival is a highly anticipated even every year in Seoul. A buddhist festical, and to commemorate Buddhas birthday, a festival is held surrounding the image of the Lotus Flower. Lotus lanterns are made and lit, an elaborate and illuminated parade prominades down the street of Jogno, near Insadong (a traditional market area of Seoul, lloaded with handicrafts and tea houses, popular with tourists). During the day on the Sunday (this year, April 30th) many buddhist activities are available, including making your own Lotus Lantern, and partaking in the local buddhist cuisine. The parade procedes to Jogyesa temple, a large Buddhist temple in the center of Seoul. Before all the hoopla begins (the festivities that foreigners are apt to take in), there is a lighting ceremony in front of City Hall. This ceremony takes place ... read more

Spring time in Korea Well last weekend I was suppose to go with the Kunsan hiking club on their continuing trek along the Bek Do De Gan trail, the group was leaving Saturday night at 9:00 pm to start the hike at 3:00 am Sunday morning, the hiking club uses two big buses to carry all the hikers. I had to go up to Seoul for a meeting on Friday and visit with my girlfriend on Saturday. When I went to work on Monday I was told by my friend that the club did not do their hike, seems like there was an accident. The back bus ran into the front bus, which left the front bus stuck, so the hiking club had a party and drank. So this weekend was kinda the peak for the ... read more

It’s a sad and lonely Sunday evening in Seoul and I’m sitting in my empty apartment with Kristy’s laptop. Kristy is on a bus on her way to Guitar (?) to see her friend Christine. I pretended to know where that is but….. I don’t mean to seek sympathy with this intro…as much as I thought it would be novel to mimic Kristy’s last entry. I too, feel cozy, perched up on my third floor apartment, overlooking the street of loud high heeled shoes and old men spitting, while sipping my water. MMmmmm This should make for a strange two weeks, the first time we’ll have been apart. I must say…..it’s a lonely feeling. Made me pretty thankful that this trip was not done solo. I feel more respect for those who venture out to take ... read more
