I have to say thank god for my lessons on the subway with Jen in Seoul seeing's I had never been on one in my life before. The one here is much simpler only consisting of 4 lines which I easily got myself to my first destination stop with. Then searching for a hotel that no longer exists got me a little confused, but I got'er all figured out with my ever improving sign language/sherrades (sp) act. By noon I was unpacking in my not so wonderful room and opening up the guide book on what to see. Honestly though people I wouldn't by the Lonely Planet "Korea" book because most of the directions in it suck. First I though I'd take a gander over to the oh so famous fish market. Well, we had an exciting St. Patty's Day...not really. We all hung out at the Dublin Bar in Seoullung and had a few drinks. Claire and I left at like 12:30 or some insanely early hour like that....but we had a big day planned for Saturday, so thats okay. Saturday we spent the whole day in Seoul and hit all the major shopiing places. Claire bought a wig and we got chased by some crazy old lady (an ajuma)...meaning an old lady in Korean. See Claire was trying in a wig and after about 3 wigs, the lady got kind of mad and proceeded to chase us out of the store...man for a pretty old lady she could run fast...haha. So we jumped in a cab and headed to Itaewon where we had this weird kind ... read more

As we come to the end of an era... here is the final bowel shaking update to our already laxative blog. There's been thrills and spills... mostly spills... to be had by all. We've met and outdrank most of our friends... teachers... associates... and those we didn't know previously... moved house and cooked for ourselves for the first time since our arrival (we actually have cooking equipment now). We've been to the Korean equivelent of a hot spring, been around to various cities, had our graduation ceremony, sucked liquids that many would consider impossible to drink... consumed things which barely passed for food, met an irishman and offended passers by with our mere presence. We wish you all a merry April and hope that soon we'll meet face to face and participate in something more productive ... read more

Funny story...... After a crazy fun filled, Karaoke singing, boot stompin, sojo drinking crazy night out in the big city of Seoul with Jenni and my new friends Brooke, Rich and Jason, Jen and I attempted the 7am wake up. Seeings we didn't get to sleep until 5am, we didn't try to hard. So 10am came along and we decided we'd better get going to our hot spring destination near Changji. With a quick bite to eat we were on the bus by noon (I was still 1/2 cut, only to have the hangover later). We arrived in Changji about 2 1/2 hours later and we needed to transfer to get to Suanbo, where the hot springs were. Soooo close, only 21km away actually; we jumped on the bus and were off. It was a ... read more

Well my second major hiking trip here in Korea and I have noticed a few things; 1) the lack of a younger generation of hikers, the group I go with is almost 100 people and the youngest person I’ve seen maybe in their late 30’s early 40’s with the majority of the age group in the 40-50 age bracket, the oldest I’ve seen looks to be in his late 60’s. 2) Koreans are speed hikers, I don’t think they are there for the scenery just how quickly they can get from point A to point B, and they are quick. 3) The total lack of wildlife, except for what few birds I heard, no signs of squirrel cuttings from pinecones, no tracks, nothing. Which made me wonder if any of the people I was hiking with ... read more

Amazing that a culture so vibrant with energy, metropolitan cognition, and a sense of humour, has such a stifled sense of creativity by reputation. Dallas said that Koreans are utterly pragmatic (my word actually, not his) - no creativity whatsoever I think his words were. This may be slightly unfair to the people of such a mysterious place such as Seoul- a place of definitive contradiction - but the reputation stands the test of time. There must be some truth behind it. A few months ago I visited an exhibit showcasing Dutch portrait photography and the emergence of a Korean genre of the like. The intention, as far as I could gather from the confusing Konglish, the always entertaining attempt at translation at all such Korean venues, was to justify Korean works in light of the ... read more

The next part of our exciting married life has started - in Korea , and with several BIG changes: 1. We’ve got LOTS of friends (well, compared to Mongolia anyway) 2. We’ve become media superstars 3. We are, at last, WARM! Leaving Mongolia was relatively easy. The final few weeks in UB were spent battling bureaucracy and standing in the frozen streets for hours on end to get an exit visa for Mongolia and a work visa for Korea . Consequently, we never did make it to the Ice Festival at Lake Khuvsgul . Mongolia saw us off in style though…It was minus 43 degrees on the day we left. Despite the cold, we still managed to thaw some tears at the airport with Muugii, our friend who had practically been living in our lounge room ... read more

Ji-Won at work was getting married and everyone at work was invited! It was a beautiful day and nice cermony in a church and then we had a lovely korean lunch (reception) afterwards. Then the wedding is finished. There is no partying and dancing like our Western style ones! It was fairly short but very nice. The traditional clothing that they changed into was lovely. Everyone places money in envelopes and gives it to the bride and groom when they enter the church. It is uncommon for gifts to be given. HOwever this was not a traditional korean wedding as I was told. It was not held outside and it had some western influences! It was wonderful! Enjoy the pics!... read more

Friday night. Not too sure what to do with myself. I'm not too worried about it either. It is a nice thing to know you have no obligations. DO whatever you want. Wander around in the dark in Bundang if you please....it's sure as hell safe enough, and the air is beginning to get that welcoming smell of spring. Or burn out on the computer. No, that won't do. That is a waste of a night, isn't it? Oh that's right, I have a cell phone now. If you want to call it a cell phone. More like a piece of junk metal. So glad a blew fifty bucks on that one. OK so the real truth is I love the people here. I dont' know where the social paranoia is coming from. Everyone here is ... read more

The last few days have been quite chill. Besides getting totally mixed up and turned around on the subway there has been little adventure. Wednesday evening’s Jen and Jason usually meet up with some other teachers here and have a late dinner and drinks. So we went to this fancy restaurant with $8 Coronas and $15 Nachos. That's outrageous (makes me miss Central America), so it was draft for me, leaving me with a slight buzz on by the time we left. Good fun. Yesterday, yet another lazy day, I rode the dam subway half way around the city before making it to the "What the Book" bookstore I was looking for. It's a pretty cool book store, all English books new and used. They buy used books too, but I don’t recommend it, they ... read more
