The Last Supper

Published: April 23rd 2007Middle East » Syria » East » Palmyra

On behalf of myself I’d like to welcome you once again to the source of your insanity. Prelude These past two days have brought me very close to death… in more ways than one. Firstly, I kept seeing a blinding white light… but we were in the desert and I could hear voices so I reasoned that I wasn’t dead yet. The reason was that we walked for hours and hours around various sites on very little sleep and after a long bus ride. Chapter 1 - Palmyra On Friday morning I was aroused by the alarm I had set for 6:30 and spent the next two and a half hours waiting for Masumi to get out of bed. We were going to be taking a two day trip as she’d sequestered a short holiday ... read more

Rocks and Heads, ouch!

Welcome again to the trail that follows my slithering existence. There are a lot of fresh smells for you to experience this time around. I do hope some of them tickle your fancy. As some of you may know I'm still in Damascus, which has been great so far. Over the past week I've seen and done a few new bits and pieces and met a bunch of new people. As Masumi works during the days I've mainly been sightseeing on my own during the days and enjoying company during the evenings. On a short walk around her area I was introduced to 3 cafes, one of which I've almost become a regular at. Over here coffee is considered to be made solely by Nescafe... come from a tin and require little more than the ... read more

A blur of a month...

Welcome back to the blemish on webspace that I continue to fill. This could end up being a long one as it’s been some time since I left a mark for you all to suffer upon. We left off at the end of February and it’s now April. At the beginning of March myself, Scott-teacher and Fiona ventured into Seoul in search of protests and flag burning as it was the anniversary of the initial rebellion against the Japanese army’s colonisation of Korea, alas we saw none. However, we did manage to catch a glimpse of some traditional Korean dancing and some marching bands. There I had my photo taken by a random South African fellow, who we later discovered was actually a member on DPC... you can view that picture in his portfolio. After this ... read more

Better lighting all round...

Here we are again... taking this kitten for the ride of her life... or was that just a dream? I'm sure you've all been waiting for me to spit more irrelevant dribble... so here it goes. I last left you with a repulsive photo of myself slipping the tongue into a fish... this one will be cleaner, I hope. Since then there has been many a night out, many a weekend away and many an event worth splattering some virtual ink for. Enjoy. Firstly... I purchased the toy camera known as the "Holga 120N," a beast by any standards... it is entirely made of plastic, bearly able to focus on anything, full of light leaks and ready for horrible photos to emerge. A few of these are able to be viewed in my DPC Profile. This ... read more

Tall tales and tidbits of truth

Published: January 25th 2007Asia » South Korea » Suwon

So here we are again... random babble for you to stew over. I am indeed back in Korea... the time spent here has brought about a few new experiences, good and bad. My first weekend back entailed a lot of snow and a lengthy shoot in Anam. Many a snowy photo was recorded and a good day was had. The next day saw a bit of a fall on the ice and a very sore knee. Thankfully, camera gear was all ok... meaning I could continue. This snow lead me off to one of the royal palaces again and after that, to a bookstore to purchase National Geographic's photography guide. The following week was discussions with the boss as to a new contract or a return to Australia. I have opted for the latter, however, on ... read more

Digital Downfall

Again, bidding you a warm welcome from the land of booze and rudeness... To pick up the (en)trail at the point we last left it... the following weekend was to be had in a city by the name of Osan. It is famous for being an industrial city and having the US Air Force base there, yet still not a lot is to be seen. However, we found some adandoned buildings and factories to take photos of. The day passed by and photos we taken, a restaurant was found, food taken and beverages consumed. All in all a good day. Next of course... I made my way to the land of the rising sun. Departing for Nagoya to see a friend of mine whom I met whilst studying Korean in Seoul. The first night was spent ... read more

Tombs, Monks and Elephant Trunks...

'Tis to be an update covering many a day... as I've been quite lethargic... There has been many an outing, many a meeting and many moments lost in swirl of time. I will recall as best I can and recount my adventures for your displeasure. Moments recorded in time tell me that myself and Fiona discovered a section of the city under destruction, an entire block of old apartment buildings being systematically torn down, an excelent location for photography by any stretch. Many a shot has been taken there, some of which can be seen on my DPC profile. A short trip into Seoul and a random exit at a random station also led us to a wonderful memorial tomb of which the gardens were quite magneficent in Autumn (a word I've not forgotten, despite my ... read more

Plonk and aged milk...

My plight in the land of god's biggest joke yet continues this week with a few new twists, turns and subsequent sicknesses... Picking up where I left off... since then Fiona has arrived back in Korea and is settling in well to a life of dipsomania, vertical drops and photography. Her first night here was an endulgent one, beginning with a bottle of Korea's finest and finishing with Wolf Blass Shiraz... nice. Since that time, photos have been taken, sights have been seen and people have slept. Come Saturday we decided bungee was in order and myself, Scott (our new teacher) and Fiona relocated to Bundang for a 46m drop... thrilling to know that you (most probably) won't hit the water at the bottom... but conversation on the way up is nervously morbid and often leaves ... read more

Of Gin & well... Tonic

Published: November 20th 2006Asia » South Korea » Suwon

Greetings and Salutations... The lord's light shined apon me and forth with it came a well endowed bottle of gin... so here you have my present situation... I'm now forty, female and have a beard... Phase 1 - Liquid and Discombobulation Last Wednesday night saw us in the Irish bar (again) for a trivia night... wasn't going to stay too late, but as usual J&T (they misspelt gin) kept me alive and well until 3am when we finished our quizzy action (my team came second... we cleaned up in the English Linguistics round). There I met a rather nice fella from Long Island, we ended up on the same team... turns out he studied comparative literature... interesting guy. I also met an Aussie by the same of Simon, who talks all together too much, but managed ... read more

Dressings and Messings

F**k you all... oh wait... I mean, hello! Greetings and salutations! Sorry to be so crude early in the piece, it's only going to get worse... I left you last time at the point of returning from holidays... this month has been reasonably eventful, so I've decided to write again. Work has been extremely stressful since the departure of our third foreign teacher Daniel... we've now got a new teacher which has made life a LITTLE better... We also had a fundraiser at the Irish bar and donated some stuff to an orphanage. However, as we found out when we got there, it was a very well off orphanage and they probably didn't need our donation, but the kids had fun with us, so that's what matters. Aside from that we've been to Seoul Land Zoo ... read more
