Here we are at Changi airport awaiting our flight home to Melbourne. That departs at 9.00pm and we get into Melbourne at around 7.00am local. So another long day. Anyway, back to where we left off. Yesterday we did not do a hell of a log. We slacked around the hotel in the morning and then decided that we would go to Bugi (pronounced 'Boogie' Street). Now back in the day when Bird and I were here in the 70s, Bugis Street was a favourite haunt for tourists. During the day it was a normal street with shops and food stalls, but at night it changed to a mecca for those wanting something different. That came in the form of blokes, dressed at girls, and if I might say so, very beautiful girls. Those who remember ... read more

We'll finally, once again. It's been a while but since leaving Dundee, we've been fairly well on the go. You know how it is with all this travelling. It was sad to leave cousins Wilma and Pam, but we did that last Friday. The idea was to spend the day in Edinburgh and stay in Edinburgh for the night and not have to rush to get to Edinburgh airport in the morning. So, after Pam's suggestion we drove as far as the Forth Bridge and then took advantage of the 'Park and Ride' - basically you park your car at a bus terminal and then travel into the city on a bus. Great, especially if you are new to the city and the city just happens to be having its Fringe Festival, including the Edinburgh Tattoo. ... read more

Our time in Singapore was short and unfortunately not so sweet. Three months in Asia finally caught up with us and we both had stomach issues for most of our time in Singapore. We arrived at the airport in Singapore around 11 pm on Wednesday night. It was a shock to the system because the airport was so clean and orderly and had vending machines, which is a weird thing to be excited about but was just one of things we hadn’t realized that we missed. We took a cab to 1 B&B Singapore where we had a beautiful room and bathroom, with bathtub, waiting for us. The room had a fluffy bed and a tv with lots of English speaking channels so it was heaven for us. The b&b is in one of the large ... read more

Well, I'm finally somewhere where I can relax a little bit. I miss China and my group a whole lot more than I thought I would. Something about China really grew on me and I know I'll be back for more time the next time around. Even though I've joked about just staying in my room and studying and not really going out while I'm here before, I think I may actually do just that. Clubs and bars are ridiculously expensive (even by US standards), and I am ready for some relaxing after Chile and China. I'm also going to try to stay on top of my schoolwork so that I can travel. I'm still taking Mandarin and I'm going to start taking Thai, which is great because I won't be entirely lost when I go ... read more

Visited Countries Map Hmmm, I have to say, I have not really been to many places, just been to the same places many times :) A brief rundown would be.. USA - uncountable times, including staying there for nearly 2 years.. (San Francisco; San Jose; Monterey; Las Vegas; Los Angeles; Washington; Northford; Virginia) Japan - once Korea - once Australia - once New Zealand - once Malaysia - again uncountable.. Singapore - obviously do not need to count... China - at least twice (Beijing twice!)... read more

Actually I'm already back in Malaysia, up at the highest hill station in the country, but I was in Singapore for two days. Being there, especially after the rest of SE Asia, is like stepping into Blade Runner. Everything is shiny and smooth in a very futuristic Asian sort of way. Every where you go, there is a smooth female voice giving some sort of directions. You buy yourself a little plastic card, and then hop on and off any bus/subway you want. And you don't even slide the card at any point. The city just knows. Even Malaysia seems dirty now. It's a great place to visit for a day or two, but quickly gets boring. Everyone speaks English. It's impossible to get truly lost. It's a little too easy. The public transportation system there ... read more

Since this is a TRAVEL blog, it would be perhaps best for me to post about countries overseas which I have been to recently. Well, the most recent one would be last year's trip to Beijing as Sec 3 EOY programme. We (30 of us) went to High School affliated to Tsinghua University. :) Here's the rough day to day events when I was there. First Day Whoa I woke up late today so I was late in meeting the group at the airport by about half an hour. Arrived ar Beijing around 3.30 pm. The lines in the airport were super long and by the time we actually got to the school, it was nearly 6 and it was dark. It is sad that the sun sets really early over there during winter. Looked like ... read more

Yoohoo! Shortly after my South America, I'm travelling again, to Cambodia! Explored almost all parts of Indochina, something that I've set out to do. These countries are almost same same but different in their own ways. Committed myself to this trip last Dec. Since Air Asia was giving free tickets away, grab first! At that time, can't foresee what I'll be doing, will I still be in South America or have I embarked on a new career? Well, the answer is: I'm still shaking leg at home. Invited a few others to take this "gamble" at that time and ZXL really took up this gamble with me. Unfortunately, she didn't "win this gamble", such a pity. But well, there's always another chance :) Looking forward to meet Cambodia Team A for a cuppa and definitely the ... read more

Home is a relative term. I've moved around a bit in my life and have never felt any connection to any place called "home." The closest I come to home is my family, but now, even they are spread all over the US and the world. Home could as well be where all my stuff is...most of which is with my folks right now...but everything I need fits quite neetly into my little red backpack, so home might was well be that backpack for me, and it often is. So, here my backpack sits with me in Singapore, home base for the next year. People ask my "how's singapore" and the best I can say is that it's a nice place to leave from...and come back to. Lots of people say you need 2 days to ... read more

Hi All, Simon, Clare & the pie have enjoyed a few weeks in Singapore by way of a start to the travels. We are not really quite into full 'backpacker' mode quite yet as we have been staying with Jon & Kat in Singapore. Thanks to them for turning their home into a commune, and providing us access to comfort, full fridge, pool, wifi, luxury & a great time spent with them! The luxury is about to come to an end. Mandarin lessons finished this week.... so we're off to China next week! It was a little bit scary going back into the classroom after so many years, and it's been really hard work concentrating for 3 hours every day, but it's been great learning something new and we have really enjoyed the classes. The school ... read more
